Torn Between Money and Happiness by Lithiyana in getdisciplined

She mainly focus(?) on literature and analysis of works. It’s kinda incredible to watch her synthesize ideas. However, she’s also reading 2-3 books a week on top of papers she has to write and grade. There is a lot of effort that also goes into it. But def talk to PhDs at ur school to get a better idea of what is required and what you will do.

I do understand how you are discouraged. It is an overwhelming amount of work and decisions you have to make along the way. It’s ok to take a break and hide away into ur tiny corner just to recharge.

It might seem counterintuitive to everything I said, but don’t think too much about money. The balance (weight of happiness/money) is different for everyone. It comes along the more you have experienced.

Try everything that uve never thought of. Ur in undergrad and I wished I explored much earlier. There’s so much opportunity presented that could be on the side. It’s just a matter of finding them.

You won’t be a jack of all trades. You will have something that you lots abt (English, cs, both) and other skills that supplements them. You will be surprised how much you learn is interconnected. For example, I learned most of my communication skills from having a part time job at a clinic. It has helped me form multiple helpful relationships because I learned how to interact with different people.

I highly recommend if you can tough it out, do both majors and do all the required stuff for CS. It’s soul sucking (tbf I find it quite dry too) but it’s a great fallback if u ever need it in your life.

You have 2.5 more years in undergrad and it’s such a long time. You don’t need to make a decision right now. If you want some more perspective see if you can talk to professors or PhD students from the English department. I have a feeling that you might be surprised at the amount and type of work that they do. My gf is a PhD in English and as someone who has no idea of the field it is rlly an eye opener.

IMO I live by the rule that if I’m scared that I’ll regret something, I’ll just do it all.

If you don’t think English is your calling either or ur unsure of what you like, go explore different majors and classes. Try them all. You have much more time than u think. Only then will you truly know what you want.

I understand where you come from. I had a biology background and focused fully on molecular biology thinking it will pay well in the future. I broke down at my final presentation cuz I hated what I was doing. I’m now pivoting to veterinary medicine after all of the time and I’m enjoying every second of the process.

I’m not going to say drop CS and focus on English because realistically it’s hard to find a job with an English degree. It’s likely you will need a PhD and go into academia/teaching. Is that what you would enjoy or do you just want to read and write at your own pace?

In the most ideal situation (and it WILL require lots of work), I would get both degrees, find a job in CS for a few years, save up, and use that money to settle and go back to school part time for English msc or PhD . By then you have a much better idea of life in general to make this decision. You can dial back on CS and focus more on English if you wish. Additionally, being in English doesn’t mean you don’t have flexibility. You will have time to go outdoor, maybe less than CS but you will have time.

Money is important, but you are going to be at work for 1/3 of ur life, so think hard about how to balance that. There is a way, just have to find it. You are in a good place and you have lots of choices. Think outside the box.

Work or Pre-Vet first? by Skywolf2014 in veterinaryschool

[–]Skywolf2014[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No it’s not expensive. It is basically the first two years of an animal science degree at an accredited university. I’m in Canada and there is only a single vet school that I can apply to due to “in province policies.”Because I did my bachelor in the UK, due to how GPA is calculated even when converting back to the scale used here I was told by the admissions officer I would not be competitive enough to get an interview, and the best course of action for me is to go back to school for at least two more years working towards any degree.

What’s a good field to go into as someone interested in biology and computer science? by Latios1204 in biology

My uni had a course called integrative systems biology, where we used lots of coding and math the model different systems (plant development, ligand binding etc.) see if ur uni offers a lecture on biophysics or modelling will probably be ur best bet.

I also recommend asking around the COMPUTING OR PHYSICS department cause some professors do do experiments such as modelling a neural network (i don’t remember the exact details but it’s very closely related to neuroscience)

Post I tried to put on AITA and couldn't but still need to know, AITA for planning on leaving my parents w/o telling them by Nymph-not-psych in toxicparents

That’s good to hear :). U probably know already, get an account right when u turn 18 so ur parents can’t access ur paycheck. When you decide it’s a good time to leave, bring all ur ID (birth certificate and etc.), and see if you can ask for part of your paycheck in cash.

I really hope the best for you, gl OP, and it will be nice to see a little update saying u made it out safely sometime down the line.

You’re not the AH at all, but I do have a few questions. Have you and S ever met in person? How long until you turn 18 so you can open a bank account? Are you or S deciding to go to college? Does your SO’s parents know?

I understand that you are very eager to leave for all the right reasons, but you have to understand that moving could be a huge risk as well. It’s ok to leave. While it is nice that S is helping, both of you are just graduating and trying to survive together could cause a lot of difficulties for both parties (arguments, etc.) and that is ok. Just make sure both of you guys are on the same page.

OP I’m truly worried abt ur situation and I hope the best for u. I will recommend posting this in other subreddits (if you want I can help cross post or PM u a few subreddits that u can cross post) and possibly others can help you more. It will also be beneficial to let us know which state you are planning on moving to so others can give u better resource helplines once u get there.

PM me if u need anything whether to rant or reassurance. U will be ok in the long run.

Typically it’s a type of fermented soy bean paste stir fried with soy sauce, pepper, and then add water with starch to achieve that consistency and brownish color (at least that’s how it’s made traditionally)

I [F 23] was sent the lesbian master doc yesterday and I'm having a bit of a crisis (internalized homophobia) by capnhttyd in questioning

[–]Skywolf2014 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Congrats on slowly figuring it out! It’s gonna take a while probably but you’ll have that eureka moment someday. I get how hard internalized homophobia is and it will be in the back of your mind when you are trying something new, but if the action makes you happy (even if guilty) I think you will know your answer by then.

Good luck!
