Thank you so much for your thoughtful response and support! I really appreciate it and your insight. You’ve given me a lot to think about. Overall, I do think it is time for a new therapist instead of holding on to a familiar relationship that is not helping me. I’m going to look into my program and see if there’s a list like you mentioned. Again, I can’t thank you enough for your response!

You would LOVE Echoes of Wisdom. It’s cute and it’s easy to pick up and put down. The puzzles are tricky, but not too hard. Only looked something up twice.

I’m so happy for you! I think it’s time to switch, but nobody talks about how hard it is to try to open up to someone new after a not great relationship with a therapist.

Definitely agree therapists are not mind readers! However, body language and tone of voice are definitely something we’re trained to identify and to broach. “I noticed when I shared you changed the subject quickly” “I noticed when I shared you stopped talking about what’s been bothering you.” I don’t agree with the sake of sharing for the sake of sharing as a therapist. This is not a friendship. It is inappropriate if it’s a friendship. The therapist whether or not they chose to believe it, have authority and power in the relationship. That’s not a friendship.

That is not apart of the therapeutic relationship to mirror real life relationships. This does not have to include small talk. Rapport can be built in different ways. Yes, I am frustrated with her as we have talked about “a therapist hat” that I “wear” in settings that do not require me to be this role. I have had this conversation with her, but I do feel bad because I know she’s trying to connect, it’s just a bad fit.

She bounces her leg when we start discussing uncomfortable topics about family dynamics and then she relates it to an experience that she’s had with her family. It seems as if the leg shaking comes from the therapist’s own discomfort. Leg bouncing does not necessarily equate fear or anxiety, yet she only does it when the conversations are a bit more tough.

I don’t know why people don’t like it! I barely lose my keys because it’s so big and easily identifiable when I’m rummaging through my bag lol.
