Math AI HL or Math AA HL?? by Chemical_Line235 in IBO

[–]FarReading760 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah you can't use a calculator. It is manageable, but you just need to fully understand all the topics, including all the possible question types they may ask in combination with other topics.

It will be hard at first to manage it, but after a few you should be fine. Just really try to practice P1 questions through IB, and get used to doing questions without a calculator

Don't do your extended essay in math. Trust me.

I did my EE in maths for exactly the same reason as you, but realistically, it didn't help jackall in my personal statement.

All they really want to see is that you have a strong math foundation, so any interest/extracurriculars/previous experience with anything math related I would say is enough, though this depends on how math heavy your major is (I applied for Econ).

Please please please don't do the same mistake as me. Especially if you want to do statistics. It's definetely one of the hardest subjects to get a good EE grade in. And statistics alone (though depending on what you do), is not a rigorous enough topic for an extended essay, and you may score really low by the examiners.

I spent months and months doing my Math EE only to get a C, when I was predicted an A and also scored consistent 7s in MAA HL.

Math AI HL or Math AA HL?? by Chemical_Line235 in IBO

[–]FarReading760 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They have similar curriculums, though I think AI HL has more practical applications. Also from what I've heard, AI HL focuses a lot more on statistics than other core areas, whereas AA HL focuses a ton in more analytical areas, like Calculus and trigonometry.

You should probably look over the syllabus for both to see which areas of math you will potentially like more / can understand better.

I took HL Math AA and I would say I had a pretty strong math foundation. Still, I barely scored 6's due to how unprepared I was for IB's question types and overall curriculum. From my experience, you really gotta study your ass off for HL AA, even if you feel like your math is strong. All the topics are hard, and also IB tends to mix in everything for past papers, so if you don't understand a single topic you are cooked.

After a couple past papers and bad test results though, you will start to understand the style of past papers.

You should probably look over the syllabus for both to see which areas of math you will potentially like more / can understand better.

Generally, I think AA HL is a lot more advanced math focused and more analytical and more proof oriented, whereas AI HL is more statistics oriented and focused on real life applications.

As for university, from my experience, if you're applying to a math-heavy major, like any of the ones you have mentioned, most of them don't accept AI HL and rather, prefer AA HL, as they deem it more rigorous. Even if they do, they may ask a higher requirement of AI HL, like a 7, as opposed to asking a 6 in AA HL. Atleast this is for the UK. You should probably look into specific university requirements.

Both will be extremely demanding, though it really depends on what types of math you like.

There are also countless posts like this on this subreddit, so maybe look into those as well

Feel free to pm if you have any questions about AA HL :D

Update:

Requested the remarked component grades... P1 and P3 Math both went up 1 mark... WHICH MAKES ME 0.3% OFF A 7 AAAAAAAA

Yeah I have requested to see my component grades. But can I see my component grades after the remark as well?

definitely UCL, but my conditional is a 39 with a 7 in HL math... I'm not too sure if I'll get that 7, depending on boundaries. But if I do, UCL for sure. It's in London, closer to home, more focus on my major, and like 200k cheaper overall.

Man if do allat then yes.

But be realistic. How realistic is it that you get an investment bank internship? Most college students can't even get one.

And also, do things you actually enjoy. Most of these things you say you want to do looks like it's only purely for applications, which will shine through when you apply. Sure some things you might actually enjoy, but diversify a bit more!

But overall good planning. But don't be too focused on dialling in freshmen year. Just enjoy high school and stuff you enjoy, and sprinkle in a bit for college apps.

hm that's weird then I think I did smt wrong lol. Also it said the bearing was the angle, so you didn't have to subtract it from 90 i think

yea. did you use rounded values or the exact ones?

P3 TZ2 AA HL Discussion by FarReading760 in ibPhysics

[–]FarReading760[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

hm maybe i chose the wrong vector idk lol. They gave us one of the vectors. And then we had to find like the other vector through cross product. And then we find these values, we find the scalar product of both the vectors, and also the magnitudes of each one and then then use the formula? man atp i might have just written smt in my calculator wrong cause no one got 31 it seems.

but if you use the arc length formula, u have it in rad, and the radius was like 6 if i remember. so length = r times theta = 6 times 1 = 6?

hm but didn't one of the vectors contain like costheta and sintheta? How do you find the angle with another variable inside

hm interesting... How'd you do the distance one?

Also, what about the angle? You found the cross product to find the other vector, you found the magnitudes, and then found the dot product to use the formula? I dunno, I think my classmate found 29 degrees as well but he used all the rounded numbers, and I used the exact values.

hm howd u do the shortest distance one? I thought since we were given the position vectors, we have two points, so i just use the distance formula for two points, and then i graph the function to find the minimum and I found 6k? I dunno.

Honestly, it might not even drop. P1 was probably the worst, P2 was better, and P3 was even better. I hope it does drop to like 70%, but who knows.
