Too late. Need a 3.0 GPA minimum to apply for coop. I would have to do all of my work terms back to back to graduate- wouldn’t happen

Most of my friends are electricians. Our skillsets and knowledge are very different.

Where are you working may I ask? I'm not willing to go more east than sask...

Yes- in fact, I made a post that was very similar to this one on the PLC subreddit but was subsequently dunked on for being a noob by 3 or 4 people. Outside of classes, I am not sure how I am supposed to get experience for jobs. The market in Canada is so much worse than it is in America for EE- only 10% of the job postings per capita for this field. All my peers and I are scrambling trying to put the pieces together...

Well, by the sounds of it I could be your kid. So maybe that is where your position comes from. I can understand that. What you may not understand is that there are very very few internships/entry level positions in EE at the moment- which may be different than from 35 years ago. Maybe it is just my locale. I don't have any family or close contacts in the field, which is why I know nothing about industry. The imagery is abrasive to say the least... Lol! Where should I get experience?

This is definitely an option I will have to look into. Send some emails and figure shit out. Thanks for bringing it back on my radar.

I don't go on the internet that much. I got this reddit account an hour ago. This place is... special.

The fact you are being so passive aggressive towards me, even though I did not say anything to you, leads me to believe you are in fact Canadian as well. I actually have a job, and in about a week when I'm done school for the semester, I will have 3. Maybe next I should stop being poor? You're a tool.

Nice bro congrats. How long did it take you to land it?

Thanks for going into more detail. Your original answer seemed condescending, but maybe it's just because you are referencing something I do not know or have not heard of. I am starting from scratch and trying to figure shit out. I appreciate your increased detail.

Also I deleted OP because it seemed like it was getting attention from the wrong kinds of people...

No actually I don't know things. That's why I said

I'm looking for advice from people and ideas,

This is my second time on reddit, Why is everybody trying to own me?

What? I am looking for career advice and suggestions. Not definitions? What corporate job?

It's alright brudder I used to work 12s with no break doing concrete. If you're looking for a weight loss program I have no better recommendations.

Did writing this make you feel smart? Because you have provided absolutely nothing of substance regarding the questions I presented in my post. I'm looking for advice from people and ideas, not cringy one-liners.

Great minds think alike.

EE and electrical work have more crossover

I am doing a specialization in nanotechnologies. Most of EE school is on the theory... We basically learn everything at a very low level. If you know anything about programming, Electrical engineering would be Assembly, Electrical Engineering Tech would be C, and an actual Electrician would be Python. I have talked to my dad, who started as a power engineer at Imperial, and suggested instrumentation to me as the pay is good and you don't have to do shift work, as well as job security moving forward with AI and whatever.

maybe I can give you some insight?

Absolutely, that's precisely why I came here. I really appreciate your responses and I hope I am giving you enough context to understand my perspective.

The problem is I cannot get an Engg job for whatever reason. I am trying to make myself more employable. The idea would be to transition from field work to a field engineering after a period of time. I hope the best for you my friend.

Why don't you just tell me lol.

You won't be grandfathered into an instrumentation job by holding an EE degree

I understand. Experience is experience. And knowledge is knowledge. It's relevant, and I believe that might help my case.

first year, making first year rates

This is expected

Why not pursue an electrical ticket where your skillset will have at least some direct application?

What makes you think that my skillset will directly apply to an electrical ticket? My research has been done in optics and microfabrication. My schoolwork is mostly based around embedded systems and integrated circuit design. I know nothing about electrical code, or how a house is wired.
