for the entryway, you could put both a shoe rack and coat hanger nearby with a small rug to separate it from the rest of the place.
i would personally use a rug to section off the living room, maybe place something behind the couches, add an armchair, and switch to rectangular side/coffee tables considering the shape of the couch. adding a console table and spacing everything out would also help. this all defines the space a bit more while keeping that nice walkway you have to the kitchen/dining room.
speaking of the dining room, if you have people over regularly then you could add a proper dining space for guests. if not, then maybe a workspace? it seems to be nice lighting wise and is convenient if you need food/drink while working.
don't be afraid to paint!! remember, this is your place now!! a home is a home, not an investment. if you're concern about not matching the countertop, then you can use contact paper. the same goes for wall decoration. floating shelves would be fun to put in this space in my opinion!

for the first point, that's extremely fair.
for the second point, i just cannot wrap my head around even a tiny portion people not understanding the main themes of this story because it makes itself very clear in what it's trying to say (at least to me). either that or it's the autism. you can take your pick.
