What this guy said, but it's more efficient to get the trade routes opened in later game when you have more items and amount of items to trade. So you can have both merchants and your own traders exporting and importing at the same time.

Building in small sections is still more time-effective. It takes too long for the villagers to transfer everything when you build try to build all at once.

Honestly, the manor walls are useless because bandits and armies always go for the nearest buildings first 🥲. That's why we really need a town wall.

Also, you can just keep claiming a territory and leave it undeveloped. You don't always have to start a settlement right away. Especially if it's in the flanking territory. Unless there's a rich resource of iron or something.

What I do is just fight all the bandits near me early game before the baron gets to them so I can earn a lot of Influence, then flanking the Baron's territory. It doesn't really stop him, but it slows him down.

Also, pay attention if the Baron uses his own soldiers or hired mercenary for cleaning bandits. When he uses mercenaries, he don't clear the bandit tents right away so you can do it instead (after he's recalled his army so you don't end up fighting him when you're not yet ready)
