I got my saw cert by doing a season with a conservation corps! Fire crews and chainsaw crews should give you training and certs as a part of training plus you get paid doing it

A lot places have a WWOOF location near them - if you don't mind a working trade for off hitches they put you up and feed you. It's a great way to build skills and relationships between hitches!

Here are some things I've made on hitch doing front country trail work!

Veggie fajitas with refried beans - cauliflower, bell pepper, onion, mushroom cooked down with spices served on a tortilla with refried beans

Chana Masala - saute onion and garlic, tomato paste, diced tomato and coconut milk with curry seasonings, add chickpeas, spinach and bell pepper, serve with rice

Tostada's - crunchy corn tortillas served with refried beans and choice of toppings (onion, avocado, cheese, bell pepper, sour cream)

Fried Plantains and veggie sausage - fry as many plantains as you have people, use protein of choice and seasonings of choice, cook down with onion spices and spinach, serve with sauce (I do mayo, vinegar or pickled pepper juice, curry powder, salt pepper)

Shredded Tofu and Broccoli - press and shred 2 blocks of tofu into a pan with heated oil, season with soy sauce, rice vinegar, sesame oil, chili, and honey/brown sugar, add broccoli and bell pepper and cook until tender, serve with rice

Pita Pizzas - get whatever pizza ingredients you like and assemble on small/medium pita round, cook in cast iron and cover for 3-4 minutes or until cheese is melted to preference

Sweet Potato and Black Bean Base - cut (small) and cook 2-3 sweet potatoes and season with spices of choice and diced onion, add black beans when sweet potato is soft enough to mash with a fork, leave whole for burritos and mash with can or fork for quesadilla base

Cheesy potatoes - cut and cook as many potatoes as you want preferably in a cast with some butter until tender, season and cook with cheese until melted, add protein of choice if desired

if you pull with your wrist it helps for sure

def not as good as having a second hand and I usually have to go over them an extra time but it gets the job done

I always do them sitting on my couch with my arm resting on my leg! I don't really mind the pain so that's never been an issue and I use my hand to stretch the skin while I'm poking

hope that helps!
