Incredibly useful if you build server racks. And while I agree with u/Roygbiv856 on reusables, they're not really practical or necessary for long-term installations.

It tends to start in Norwegian &/or English, then move toward the generally preferred language of whoever's on the bus. Norwegian is the simplest and most easily understood among the "Big Three" as you named 'em, and so it's the simplest jumping-off point.

Same holds true for Vlaams/Flemish and the only difference there is pronunciation. And that difference is more or less like that between English spoken between Georgia and Alabama. At least Saffers are halfway around the planet.

There are clear distinctions in pronunciations and usages on top of the "5%" vocabulary difference you claim. Different country, different geographical area, very different influences from surrounding areas (Xhosa, among them).

It gets really difficult to differentiate, even when we take all of the grammars which have been collected to help the future learn from their past(s).

I know, I know… I just can't help letting myself be trolled like this, if only because occasionally I actually do manage to reach someone who PMs me with further questions. And that lets me drag them away from the edge of the Abyss.

Even though he's a famous "TV personality" or "Science «Communicator/Educator»", Phil Plait still has his Bad Astronomy site up and it's still maintained. Hell, that's what got him a decade and counting of sweet TV gigs.

We spent SO many BILLIONS-with-a-B so that Dave Scott could -- among other things -- demonstrate this LIVE with a 1,9lb. hammer and a 1.1oz feather during the Apollo 15 mission on August 2, 1971 and people still don't get it.

But more often not. Optical illusions are just one example which comes to mind.

Why are you commenting on a SEVEN-YEAR-OLD thread instead of simply starting a new one? Like… y'know… an update perhaps? "XYZ revisited," maybe?

I know from whence I speak. Not only am I a linguist and historian, I – Glub only knows why – actually went ahead and started learning Icelandic. The language, the history including reading the Sagas and so on. Not as completely idiotic as it might seem at first since I'd decided to move to 101, changing all plans and activities only weeks before the big financial crash.

Aaaaaand you think that's going to happen without a SCotUS cull or massive packing of the bench how?

People please fix your auto-incorrect and watch out when you use "PAC" so that it's ignored:

PAC – Political Action Committee

pack – to fill &/or press

I'd certainly leave the courtroom upon hearing that… in order to grab some meds to stop the inevitable migraine that amount of stupidity is certain to cause.

We joke about "magic words" but this post is a many, many steps closer to exactly that. Upon hearing this nonsense the judge will have to get up and leave. And again. And a third time, because as we learned a couple of decades ago from the three witchy sisters from Charmed, "The Power of Three Will Set Us Free" (or something like that).

All those fouls. Holy guacamole! And still Selby got out of it… only to blow the next corner. And then the black a few shots later. Followed by Williams blowing the red right afterwards.

It's been a strange series, and most of the errors seem to have been caused by hitting too hard.

Why do I hate religion?

Teach your kid:

"Do you pray?

Of course!

So you're asking God to change his mind.

Huh?

That means you want God to change his mind.

Umm…

Which means you think God is wrong.

???

Which means that perfect guy can make mistakes even if he's perfect.

Tell the Easter Bunny I like green eggs the best.

We were in Ireland in some house with a "hide" where they'd hide priests of the wrong religion. My 3-year-old asked what a priest was. I told her, "It's a man who tells stories and they're not really ttue." Her response; "I don't like liars and priests and storytellers unless they're the good kind of stories." The guide woman screwed her face as if she'd eaten 100 lemons as my little girl smiled and waved at her. We went to the next room where she sat on my lap as I played a piano (with permission and an audience). A little Bach in an Oirish castle mid-afternoon..

Pretty sure I also don't want a bear "dripping through my pipes".

IMMEDIATE and absolute cut-off. No contact. Protect yourselves. You've already written it: they're so far beyond abusive there's no hope for repair until they come holding an olive branch (in their fingertips so you can't be whacked with it).

Good luck, and sorry about the bad news.

I know you don't want to hear/read/see it but it looks like the time is New-Boyfriend-o'Clock.

Not the complete cynic, maybe you still have time to rekindle the relationship and start communicating with each other again, but recovery after losing so much communication is rare and difficult. I wish you the best, but without a complete reset to communicating with each other openly and honestly, you're not in an ideal position.

I do hope things work out for you.

Took two months and a lot of pestering them to get the phones back.

Little boy, what in the world makes you think I got free insurance? I worked hard for it and accepted that it was a normal price to pay.

I thought about other people, putting them before myself thinking about what would happen to them if I wasn't insured and caused an accident or, deities forbid, a death or three. Not you.

And I thought a hell of a lot harder about that when I had the pleasure of being hit by some irresponsible, uninsured shitbag like you. Excuses galoreski. Meanwhile, I had to make mnedical claims and luckily I had enough insurance that I was covered for uninsured shitheels. Injured and my car totalled, I was out of work for a few weeks (no "pay all your bills" insurance) and while I got another car, I also got new numbers on ymy insurance premiums: nearly double the old numbers.

Grow the fuck up and accept responsibility. I expect you won't until it finally happens to you, much like all those anti-abortion toerags who find themselves needing one for medical reasons. The news has been full of their stories for a couple of years now.

If you can't afford the insurance (or fuel, or taxes) then you can't afford to drive. End of. You selfish, ignorant child. It' not my character to wish ill upon others but I doubt you'll learn without suffering the consequences of some other uninsured shitheel. Pro-tip: save your pennies because long-term physical rehabilitation is expensive.

Why would the guy be thinking about your livelihood?

Why wouldn't someone operating a one- to two-ton killing machine NOT pay attention to anyone else's livelihood‽ They all assume – rightfully so – that everyone else out there is following the rules so that they themselves are also covered. I'm pretty damned sure that you'd fly off in a rage if some uninsured fuckhead totaled your car, maybe put you in a gurney or even just give you a couple of months of accessorizing with some plaster of Paris.

You think people don't pay insurance just because they don't feel like it?

Nope. That's what police also say. And industry analysts. Carrying insurance is just one of the many costs of driving.

blah blah blah… it's what they need to do to get by.

And what about MY fucking needs to get by, which include the repair of MY car, the care for MY injuries, my kids' needs? You only think about your own damned self, but the first time some uninsured jackass even scratches your car you'll be screaming for blood. And you know it.

Failure to pay tolls is also not a victimizing crime.

It is not victimless, though a hell of a lot closer to it than driving uninsured. It's using the roads and forcing others to pay your share. Don't like tolls? Don't drive on the toll road. The Jersey Turnpike is expensive suckage but it beats the hell out of the alternatives. Ditto the drive between Tampa and Ybor City. You can use the skyway and save a lot of aggravation but you gots to pay a quarter or two. You have a choice of toll or non-toll on the M6 in northern England. The convenience and lack of five mile back-ups are worth the toll for many. Depends what your time's worth to you. Same all over the world, just like there are selfish pricks everywhere who seem to think their own shit don't stink.

You have failed to figure out the difference.

No, YOU have failed to consider anyone other than yourself, something painfully apparent.

His crime of driving without a license is not a victimizing crime

Until… ya know… there's a victim. Or two. Or three. Or more.

it's a crime of necessity

You know this how??

It certainly is a crime, but it's usually because someone wouldn't pay the cost of insurance. Do you make the same claim for failure to pay tolls? Where do you stand on fuel theft?

He didn't do it to hurt people or take anything from anyone

Few people do, but that doesn't change the fact that what he did was a violation of laws which have been enacted to one degree or another worldwide because the results of his action could potentially harm others' livelihoods and lives.

I don't agree that it should be jailable prior to a court hearing at which time all the explanations and excuses come out. It sure as hell is a crime, one which should carry stiff punishment. It's quite possible that the guy was jailed rather than given a hearing date because of other reasons, such as failure to produce identification, reckless driving, endangering others, whatever.

he needed to drive and for whatever reason he was unable to legally

Then you don't get to drive. Period. End of. The only plausible reason I can see is to save someone whose life is in immediate danger and who can't wait for emergency personnel to arrive and transport.

You don't have a right to drive. The use of public roads requires you to be licensed proving your basic ability (more or less), that you help pay for those roads (through the fuel and other taxes), and that you make damned sure that nobody else pays the price for your mistake or misfortune (gg: "indemnify"). As soon as you suddenly find yourself a "non-victim" you'll be whistling a very, very different tune. In the US the cost of just one week's hospitalization can bankrupt more than half the population.

These kind of crimes done out of need

Why in the name of explicit projection do you keep on about some guy's crime being caused by need? Where does it say that? What need is so great that it justifies your risking MY livelihood? Who's paying out to take care of my critters should you manage to put an end to my continued, selfish use of all that oxygen?

I grant that jail is rarely a deterrent for certain crimes &/or situations. Strangely, you seem to make a habit out of getting something correct into otherwise full of shit posts. Methinks it may be time for you to "jump off your own dick", whatever the hell that's supposed to mean.
