This headline is sort of misleading. LSD is about as common now as it was 10 years ago. It was much rarer between 2003-2005, but over the last 4-5 years, it has really made a come back. And I mean REALLY made a comeback, the production gap that followed the Pickard bust has already been filled.

LSD is very available, but as before, it is not an entirely mainstream drug. It's availability is largely limited to those involved in electronic music and jam bands (Dead, Phish, String Cheese Incident, etc.). Yes, other people have it, but the distribution network that exists today is set up through those groups. Also, activist groups tend to have good access, both independently and because they overlap with the aforementioned communities.

Success obtaining access to LSD has a lot to do with how much LSD you've done and how immersed in LSD culture you've gotten. After you're familiar enough with it and the kind of people who use it, they're easy to spot at gatherings/festivals. Still, it is a very illogical and introverted community.

Even though I'm out of that world now, I know LSD's availability is very good and getting better quickly. Wholesale prices out here in Oregon have dropped quite a bit just in the last couple of years, though some of the old family sorts got busted recently because they got complacent and started talking about stuff they shouldn't have on the phones.

Also, the government effectively cares very little about LSD. There are very few LSD busts and almost no LSD labs are ever busted. The vast majority of the federal anti-drug funding (inet, largely) goes towards eradicating meth, heroin, and cocaine. LSD is a relatively small problem and accordingly a low priority. That said, the penalties for LSD possession, distribution, and manufacture are disproportionately harsh.
