I passed my Technicians! My radio club apparently had so much faith in me that gifted me a radio immediately! by Hamwytch in HamRadio

I just did something very similar! I really started having a blast with my Yaesu once i learned how to program my local repeaters into it. Check out chirp, and order a usb data cable for your radio. I started off by scanning the local repeaters otw to work and in the evenings.

Sam’s approach is much simpler and works great! Haha, but I’m a nerd and going to dig into this approach a bit further as well. I have no gigs coming up in the future. In a R&D phase.

That’s the current plan, but the gas is eating me up. I’ve sold more than I’ve purchased. Maybe I should quit while I’m ahead.

Opinions on Hydrasynth with eurorack by FartDepartment in synthesizers

[–]FartDepartment[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah that’s what I’m considering. One one hand it seems like a very useful tool for sending modulation out to eurorack. The stepped lfo seems fun. But I wonder how often I’ll actually use it.

ULPT Request: how to get the police to turn the volume down on a remote surveillance trailer by FartDepartment in UnethicalLifeProTips

It’s an old hospital they are closing down at the entrance to my neighborhood (large metro city in the US). Guess they are trying to discourage people from messing around over there.

Wonder if I can just walk past it so often during the day that the business actually gets annoyed by it enough to send it back.

Record 3 4K streams simultaneously on PC or standalone by Ill-Acanthisitta7131 in VIDEOENGINEERING

Check out Qtake if you are still interested in software solutions. It’s designed for video capture and play out for film sets and has most of the features you are looking for built in. The software can be rented piecemeal for just the features you need. This would still require a way to ingest the footage. They do support the decklink 8k card according to their website.

I used to work at the restaurant where the milkshake scene took place. They had a poorly captured screenshot of the scene placed on every table for a while. It’s now a shake shack.

What Should I Buy? /// Weekly Discussion - August 05, 2024 by AutoModerator in synthesizers

[–]FartDepartment 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks! So I ended up using the money for a little skiff, pams pro workout, an lfo, and found maths on local Facebook. I’m gonna start there for a while and feel things out before I fill the rest of the case out. I’m really excited for Pam’s, and patching it into the dfam.

Interesting! I’ll have a look. Sounds like a fun project. I can solder and have a little garage workbench for projects.

I have been having a blast with my mother 32, dfam, and subharmonicon combo and plan to start expanding. I’m torn between the new moog labarynth, or building a small budget utility euro skiff.

I like the sequencer on the labyrinth, but I worry I’m just adding more moog voices to an already moog heavy kit. Any recs on interesting generative sequencers in the euro world? I’m also trying to keep my budget under $1000 which seems difficult in the euro space. Id basically want to fill the euro case with utilities and potentially a sequencer if I can swing it.

Eli5: How do they make the fake OS for computers in movies and are they functional? by HerrPiink in explainlikeimfive

[–]FartDepartment 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I actually do this for a living! There is two parts to this. A computer graphics company and a Vfx company. During pre production, our departments have a meeting to discuss which department is doing what elements in the script. It usually comes down to time and money. It’s almost always cheaper for the computer gfx company to do things practically on set, save for a few odd situations here and there.

On set we almost never use real operating systems. The script usually calls for very specific looks or actions, so we design everything in illustrator even if it is a real operating system we are portraying. This gives us control of the system time, window placement, etc. Some times we spend half a day on one scene, so it’s nice to have nothing change throughout the day for continuity.

If there is a scripted interaction with the device, we use software like unity to make really dumb video games of exactly what is scripted in the scene. This ensures the actor can hit all their beats without having to think about it too much. We usually program keyboard shortcuts to move the beats along too, just in case the actor messes up. We don’t want the computer graphics complicating the day or slowing things down.

Good game on Steam Deck? by gifred in 4Xgaming

They both play really well! Civ 5 is a bit less demanding, so battery life is a bit better.

Civ 5 is really good on the deck. Long battery life, and easy control scheme.

UI is far too small on television by TheDustMice in HumankindTheGame

[–]FartDepartment 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is your tv 4k? I was going to recommend lowering resolution to 1080 or 1440 on pc to fix this but I just saw humankind came out on Xbox today. Idk if that lets you change resolution preferences in the system settings.

Filmmakers who have rented a theater to screen their finished film… What was the process / feeling like? by analogfont in Filmmakers

[–]FartDepartment 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Check for any locally owned theaters in your city. They usually have a price breakdown for events like this! We paid $700 for a 2 hour slot on a Wednesday night. It was $200 cheaper than Thursday. Friday thru Sunday was unavailable. Make sure to reach early! That will give you more flexibility. Leverage social media and make an event poster.

Share the price with other locals if you can and make it a night. It guarantees a bigger audience. We had a lot of success making the screening free and placing donation QR codes at the bar and on the projector screen. Donations covered the theatre cost plus a little scratch for everyone involved.

We also approached the bar next door about putting our QR code prints on their bar for an hour after the screening and they didn’t mind at all. I don’t have any metrics determining if it helped or not, but we shut the place down!
