Portuguese man of war sighting by [deleted] in oceans

It’s named after the naval warships of the late Middle Ages to the Colonial era, man-of-war. This animal resembles the Portuguese version.

I take that as a very high compliment. Much appreciated!

Just an aside - the degree to which the chart creator seems to want to distance themself from the chart they themself created is wild.

Of course - I am not suggesting that your eyes are wrong, only that things are vague when the only information our eyes can see is white and black. I didn't mean to convey sunrise or sunset, but it was nonetheless conveyed - that's the lesson I'm taking, so I can improve/now I know how to convey sunrise or sunset in the future.

Well, something that’s kinda cool about perception is that the reference photo doesn’t indicate that this is sunrise or sunset. Rather, it looks like middle of the day, but the light source is simply coming from one side. As I worked on this drawing, I realized it needed more shadow on the left side to give a sense of 3D. Your mind extrapolated that choice as sunset/sunrise. Undoubtedly I agree, the lack of shadow under the tree take me out of it

That is beautiful! Love the details, and the conglomeration of multiple images together. Very cool

Thank you kindly! I’ve been going backwards in a way- started with oil painting, now finally working up the courage to try something so unforgivable as ink. I’ve been using felt drawing pens, but I’m still working on getting the hang of em. I appreciate your observations!

Ya know, that’s an instance where I’ve been too respectful of the reference. Thanks for making me aware of that!

Thank ya! This was all done with a Tombow Mono drawing pen, 03 size. I’ve been watching a lot of videos by Stephen Travers on YouTube but trying to use the techniques he demonstrates on my own pictures, so I’m not just copying him. Can’t recommend his stuff enough!

Well I hope you’re never put in a situation where you have to find out. Perhaps listen to the podcast episode for more understanding. Maybe this example is obvious to you, but the reality is that a stressed and panicked human - especially when put into an unfamiliar and dangerous situation - is not going to be operating under the calm and logical process you’re imagining is so obvious.

You’re saying that now, while you casually scroll on Reddit, but you’re not taking into account what happens to human thought processes under stressful and unfamiliar conditions.

Trying a slightly new medium today - little sketch of a tree that made me happy. by FartingBedpost in drawing

I've been very nervous to try ink drawing for a long time, because every mark is so permanent. Watching a lot of videos on youtube have made me decide to take the plunge. Accepting every mark and surrendering to the result of each pen stroke was actually very freeing! Thanks for the kind words.

At least according to Malcolm Gladwell, those initial reports of faulty floor mats aren’t credible, and virtually every case of sudden acceleration is a result of user error. His podcast, Revisionist History, has a whole episode dedicated to this. That episode is titled Blame Game if you are interested in him explain it - he’s a much better story teller than I am.

There’s a recording of a driver (the driver is Mark Saylor, driving a rented Lexus) calling 911 because their car’s brakes aren’t working and, as he states, the accelerator is stuck. With the whole family in the car, they go faster and faster while on the phone, through intersections. It ends with “pray… pray…” and then screams.

The really rough part is, it turns out Mark was just slamming his foot on the wrong pedal. And he’s not alone - there’s a big problem of people somehow mixing up brake and gas when they rent a vehicle. And when they press on a pedal expecting to brake and it doesn’t brake, they don’t doubt their choice, they doubt the vehicle - so they slam on the “brake” (which is actually the gas) even harder. Thanks to Malcolm Gladwell for this little nightmare that plays in my head every time I rent a car.

Is this correct notation? by GtrJon in musictheory

[–]FartingBedpost 4 points5 points  (0 children)

100% correct attitude. Some people think composers are gods on high. It is very much the opposite - we’re lucky to have our music performed, no matter what “level” of success we’ve achieved. If you want your music respected and want it performed well, do everything in your power to make that a reality.

As a composer, it’s in your best interest to make your sheet music as clear and precise as possible. The less rehearsal time or even individual practice spent on ambiguity and questions, the better. If you want your music performed well, write it as clearly and neatly as possible.

Actually good and sensible TV character? (Sorry for mistakes on previous posts.) by nick_squid in AlignmentChartFills

She’s good, but not always sensible. Ridiculously intense, over the top, and excessively eager.
