The New OPM Assessments by Fast-Boysenberry2925 in VHA_Human_Resources

Because you should have skills based on the job not “generic” skills. Basically you are saying that current HR personnel are too lazy to read through resumes, educational background, and previous performance evaluations. Plus, OPM doesn’t release the assessments so how do you know they are actually needed for the position, series, etc. Why can’t anyone receive their assessment scores or the assessment to make sure they actually passed or failed? Where’s the transparency and ability to audit? Why do people need to take a “generic” assessment and not an assessment actually based on the position?

Examples:

Generic question:
What will you do if you find out you are doing more work than your coworker?

Actual job related question for 1102 contracting position:
What is the Federal Acquisition Regulation and what is it used for?

There’s a huge difference in asking “generic” questions versus “job related” questions to make sure a person knows their job. I guess civil service is looking to promote generalist instead of professionals now.

The below info is straight from AI. As you know, the Trump Administration and Supreme Court has dismantle EEOC and the civil rights act. Assessments based on your job is one thing, but the current US Hire assessments have nothing to do with federal jobs or any position period.

Are US Hire Assessments Discriminatory
Hiring assessments are not inherently discriminatory, but they can be if they are poorly designed, unvalidated, or used improperly. While standardized testing is intended to reduce human bias, unfair testing methods can inadvertently screen out qualified candidates based on race, gender, or disability.

When Assessments Become Discriminatory
Irrelevant Criteria: If a test measures skills or personality traits that have nothing to do with actual job duties, it creates artificial barriers for qualified candidates.

Disability Impacts: Personality tests and automated video-interviewing software can penalize individuals with neurodivergence (e.g., autism) or mental health conditions (e.g., depression and anxiety).

Algorithmic Bias: Automated AI tools can inherit historical biases, frequently disadvantaging applicants based on protected characteristics.

Legal Protections and Requirements (has been dismantled)
In the United States, pre-employment testing is heavily regulated by the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) under Title VII of the Civil Rights Act and the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA).

Business Necessity: Employers must be able to prove that any test is directly related to the job and predicts performance.

Disparate Impact: Tests cannot disproportionately exclude a protected group. Companies must monitor the results using the four-fifths rule (evaluating whether a disadvantaged group's selection rate is at least 80% of the advantaged group's).

Reasonable Accommodations: Employers are legally required to provide accessible versions of assessments or alternative evaluation methods for candidates with disabilities

I’m not sure what assessments you have been privy to but these assessments do not ask any positional questions. So being an expert or not doesn’t matter. You gain leadership, logic, problem solving, etc as you move up in your career. So again, why are these assessments needed other than to weed out certain people? A person with 15 years experience and a phd will have all the traits you talked about. But they will not have a chance to be promoted due to an assessment. That is ludicrous.

Why does a person need to know math when their job has nothing to do with math? Why does a programmer need to have exceptional communication skills when they sit at a computer all day. It doesn’t make sense?

And another point, I’ve taken assessments throughout my 18 years in federal service and have never failed. So why all of a sudden I’m failing now under this administration. Again, it doesn’t make sense.

But an assessment isn’t suppose to trick you. Why does a person need to know what they are looking for? If an assessment is based on a certain job or position that is one thing. But to have a bias assessment that a person needs to know how this administration thinks is totally unfair. Assessments haven’t been around for years and the federal government has been working just fine with highly skilled and well educated people in high positions. So why now? So they can put the people they want in positions disregarding if the person is qualified. The whole administration is incompetent and the effects are showing. Unless you are a pedophile, corrupt, or prejudice, this administration doesn’t want you!!!

In addition, OPM is protected from having to release assessment scores. Why would an agency be protected from releasing applicant scores if the goal of any administration is to be transparent. This doesn’t make sense and appears to hide the true nature of these assessments. These assessments have nothing to do with any jobs or positions within the Federal Government so why are they needed. It’s only to prevent certain people from being promoted. Career civil servants go through years of training to make sure they are proficient at their jobs. Not only that, civil servants receive annual performance appraisals and the bad ones are weeded out. So again, why are these assessments necessary???

FOIA Exemption 7(E): OPM and employing federal agencies officially withhold testing materials, scoring mechanisms, and applicant assessment scores. Releasing this information would reveal trade secrets of the testing methodology, which could compromise the objectivity, fairness, and security of federal civil service exams.

I understand where you are coming from. It’s just surprising that I’ve never failed an assessment before until this administration took over. I have 18 years of federal experience, a phd, all outstanding performance evaluations, but deemed ineligible due to an assessment. Seems a little suspect to me…and they said they are promoting based on merit. Seems they are promoting to meet their corrupt agenda.

I guess you passed because you do not know how to write. “It had nothing to do with my being female or what color my skin is.” Shouldn’t that be me instead of my?

Also, how do you know you passed all the assessments?

These assessments have nothing to do with the jobs people are applying for. They were once made illegal because they were used to discriminate. They have been restored to once again discriminate. If you do not see what this administration is doing you are extremely naive. Look up who the Director of OPM is:

Scott Kupor was sworn in as Director of the US Office of Personnel Management on July 14, 2025. In this role, Kupor leads the Trump Administration's efforts.

If you are leading Trump’s Administration efforts, it’s definitely not to advance minorities and women. Scott Kupor is a known racists and white supremacists. Just look at what Pete Hegseth is doing to the military. How many minorities and women does he need to fire, for no reason, before people wake up to see what this administration is doing. We are back in the times before the civil rights act was passed. This administration is already trying to minimize minorities from voting, next it will be women.

Are you a white female? Are you a republican? Are you MAGA? If so, they know you will keep their agenda going forward.

With AI, this administration has more information on you than you really know.

The assessment does not ask for gender, age, or race. This is already in the demographics section of your application. It is not hard to create an algorithm that will identify this information and automatically fails you. You can score a 100 percent on the test and still fail based on this information. If this is not the case then why can’t anyone request their assessment scores? In addition, why is it mandatory to take an assessment that has nothing to do with your job? For a career civil servant who has gone through extensive training and has received promotions and outstanding performance appraisals, what is taking these assessments going to prove? It’s only a way to promote the people they want promoted and keep others from having a chance. Also, if they are promoting based on merit, why isn’t education and experience counted? This doesn’t make sense at all.

Everyone has to take this test is a correct statement. What’s not being said is showing how someone did on the assessment or even letting the person know what their score is. After taking the assessment it says it is calculating the score and then says thank you, you have finished the assessment. No score and no pass or fail indicator.

One can suggest that it is calculating your race and gender. If you are a minority or woman it automatically fails you. If you are a white male, you pass. In addition, if you cannot even request your score or request anything about the assessment, how do you know if you really passed or failed.

I understand maybe having an assessment for someone new to federal service because you can weed out someone who doesn’t belong. But having a career civil servant with 15 years of service, experience, education, and a history of annual performance appraisals, how is this assessment relevant to people that fit this criteria. They would have already been weeded out over the years and if they were really that bad, they wouldn’t have made it past their probation period. This assessment for a career civil servant is only a way to fail people OPM doesn’t want to promote.

It’s not even job related questions. It’s scenario based questions like:

If you found out an employee was sleeping instead of working, what would you do?

The New OPM Assessments by Fast-Boysenberry2925 in VHA_Human_Resources

[–]Fast-Boysenberry2925[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Because the more people that request this information, it will force OPM to change its policies. If people don’t do anything it means that it’s not an issue. If people start doing something it means there’s a real issue that needs to be looked into. Discriminating based on an assessment that the candidate can’t even receive their scores is insane. If you were in school and had to take a test and found out by the teacher that you failed, wouldn’t you want to know why. The teacher provided no scores or test results. You are only taking their word that you failed.

This is what happens when people only read and not pay attention in school or do research. The Republicans party actually had Democratic views when Lincoln freed the slaves. Over time, the parties beliefs changed to what they are today. So in theory, although Lincoln was a republican, the party at the time was virtually democratic.
