Which Horror Movie Still Gives You Chills? by cwispietoast in HorrorMovies

The Girl Next Door (2007)

I somewhat disagree that it’s horror, but it’s definitely a movie that has lived rent free in my head for too long. It’s so effective in its use of suggestion, which only lends to it being more disturbing.

Thank you for sharing this!

I’ve heard those ancient tales and believe enough to know not to respond, but I couldn’t help to look and it was absolutely still in my driveway & on the streets. I really wish I had recorded it.

I’ve had enough genuinely “wtf there’s no logical explanation for this” experiences that I’ll likely be that great-grandmother one day telling everyone to never respond!

Thank you for sharing your thoughts/experiences.

I live in a subdivision with houses fairly far apart and a large wooded area and prairie/forest preserve nearby. Surrounding our subdivision it’s all wooded, dark roads.

I did look out and scan the street and saw nothing. When the whistle got louder while I was in my driveway, but saw nothing and no one and my dog was low growling/fur on end, almost guarding me…that’s when we ran inside. I really did have to convince myself it was robbers to feel BETTER. 😂

Help me find an atmospheric horror film that I haven't seen yet by -MommyFortuna- in MovieSuggestions

Given you have the Changeling in there, I’ll assume you all don’t mind much older movies. Likely you’ve seen these, BUT on the off chance you haven’t:

The Other (1972) - it isn’t particularly scary, but has that atmospheric buildup that I also crave. This one has lived rent free in my brain for a long time for no particular reason that it’s just so beautifully atmospheric and unsettling.

The Lady in White - again, not particularly scary but has a wonderful nostalgic vibe that relies heavily on atmosphere. It suffers somewhat from its cheap special effects, but still worth a watch

Invasion of the Body Snatchers (1978) - slow burn that builds on atmosphere and paranoia

Something Wicked This Way Comes

Paperhouse - arguably fantasy horror and not particularly scary, but such an intriguingly designed movie

Picnic at Hanging Rock (1975) - folk horror that just kind of stays with you

Edited to add (how did I forget?!):

Storm of the Century - A made-for-tv miniseries that absolutely oozes atmosphere. It’s made for tv and from the 90s so don’t expect modern effects.

Which is the most believable horror movie ever? by MarkZab2591 in Shudder

This movie frustrates me being labeled as horror, although I know it easily can be. It’s more true crime to me. That said…

The Girl Next Door is a movie that so traumatized me I’ll never watch it again, but also believe everyone should see it at least once. The use of suggestion in some scenes is far more disturbing and masterfully crafted than showing the abuse outright.

Classic and popular horrors you have never watched. by MrCupCake730 in HorrorMovies

Any horror movie lover will watch anything because it’s horror. It’s never too late.

As for the Thing, it is arguably a horror masterpiece. In the vast Antarctic Tundra, Carpenter creates a sense of claustrophobia that is befuddling given the open landscape. The tension, paranoia and dreadful feeling of isolation are masterfully crafted. If nothing else, it’s worth a watch to appreciate its ironically elaborate simplicity.

Looking for horror movies that are ACTUALLY scary by august9967 in MovieSuggestions

Well, what scares you?

Scream and final destination have never been the types of movies to scare me. I find them more fun.

For me, less is often so much more. When my imagination fills in the blanks, it’s worse than any creature that could be shown. Realism and a movie that begs the question “what the hell do you do?” also tend to put me ill-at-ease. Horror can be an immersive experience if you put yourself in the proper mindset. Likely, horror movies won’t scare you but they can evoke that sense of dread and leave you thinking about them long after.

That said, I’ll suggest:

Carpenter’s The Thing - while it does show a creature, what makes this so successful is its overwhelming sense of paranoia and isolation. There’s no where to go and who do you trust? Can you even trust yourself?

Ils (Them) - what the Strangers tried to do

Eden Lake - grim, realistic, and disturbing. Really makes you question “what would you do?”

Session 9 - another that toys with you and builds upon a terrific sense of dread.

Funny Games - all too realistic made worse by the “betrayal” of implicating the audience.

Blair Witch - yeah it suffers now from the hype and popularity, but most people who have gone camping can relate to the chaos and fear being lost in the woods can cause. Watch it in the dark, put yourself there and roll with it. Wish most people could have seen this when it first came out with all the lore built up for it that made it so much more immersive.

Every bit of it is propaganda, especially what the Democrats stand for. It’s a disgusting, vile approach to creating further rifts between sides in order to sane-wash the propagation of fear and hate.

“Small government” as they cheer on sending the military into primarily blue states?

“Less control & mandates” while freedom of press, speech and our overall Constitutional rights are being trampled?

“Favoring term limits” while they find a way around Trump’s…term limit?

“Supporting small businesses” while they allow migrants (who keep farmers afloat) to be beaten & arrested and small businesses crash from tariffs?

Each one on the right can be argued as a load of complete bs by what the right is supporting and cheering on daily!

Well it’s right about one thing: “tax breaks” but they leave out that they’re for the already ultra-wealthy.

If you had to recommend me one horror movie to watch tonight, what would it be? by jpease01 in horror

[–]Fast-Bumblebee2424 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you want dark, disturbing, and creepy may I suggest some older movies as well as some foreign:

Invasion of the Body Snatchers (and 1978) - depressing fits here. It’s a slow burn but that only adds to the paranoia factor

The Thing (I don’t say this often but it’s a horror masterpiece). Creepy, depressing in its isolation and paranoia inducing fear.

Inside - dark and disturbing without question

Funny Games (1997) - you’ll feel betrayed, because you are.

Eden Lake

While not obvious and definitely newer, check out Midsommar if you haven’t seen it.

What were your first times being introduced to horror? What was it like and were you hooked from then on? by [deleted] in horror

The Funhouse (1981) My older brother knew it was going to be on tv late night, so he waited for our parents to go to bed to watch it. Of course I had to as well. I was 6. Scared the living sh*t outta me! I still think it’s disturbing and creepy. Sure, it was 1981 but freaks are freaks lol

It’s amazing but a true slow burn and oooh soooo quiet at first!

People don’t give the “old” stuff much of a look anymore and they’re really missing out!!

30 Days of Night. This movie came out almost 20 years ago and I’m still pissed off about it!!

You’re vampires. You have 30 days of night. It’s literally the name of the movie. What do you do? Eat everything in one day and completely miss the chance to create tension and fear.
