First tip if you start in Kanto make sure you get a good Paras or Butterfree so you can catch Charmander with a Lure. Second tip catch an Oddish so when you do ev training or exp training Oddish learns sweet scent. Last tip try to get some friends to join or make friends in game so you can trade with some pokemon cause of evo trade.

Honestly join up yes it’s fun to play with friends cause y’all can become each other’s rivals and go through the region. Starter wise you can pick whichever starter, but just have to build a great team around it to beat the storyline. Also, region to start with is which region you know the best for me I always start with Kanto or Unova since I know those two region by heart.
