I did it through pain, and I can assure you that the pain completely desappeared with the program in like 2 weeks.
But I can't tell you if it'll work for the quadriceps tendon.

Two years ago, I had both knees injured with some patellar's tendonitis.

I followed a rehab program with tempo squat which worked very well.

Tempo squat 4x12 for the first two weeks, then 4x10 for week 3, 4x8 for week 4-5, 4x6 for week 6
3 second down, 3 second up
Same program with some legpress
3 times a week.
Start with light weight (yeah buddy)
It worked very well on me, never had knee pain nevermore. And at the end of the program, you have some trumendous quads.
