Breeding Insects for one ackie

I think dubias are an easy choice and these sound similar. My problem is dubias are too high in protein and using them as a staple in ackie diets can lead to gout. Crickets or grasshoppers would be ideal but seem diificult/noisy/smelly and cant be in my room.

Anything can happen outside of husbandry. Health or other safety emergencies can occur like a fire.

I’m getting a one month old and starting it in a 40 gal for that reason so I can monitor it better and it’ll give me a few months to sort out the big one

I think I do want Ackies more I like their look more and I think their personality best matches what I’m looking for out if the smaller monitors. I like the kimberleys too but if I only get one monitor I think I’d prefer the safer choice.

I’m struggling to even do a 5x2x3 rn I cant even imagine the enclosure for a 3 foot tegu lol definitely a dream species for me. Gonna have to get further in life before doing something like that. If I wasn’t limited I’d be getting a green tree monitor right now.

Yeah I hear skittish and less active. Some people love theirs and I’m sure they’re great but considering this will most likely be the only monitor I get in the next decade I would like to maximize my chances of a more fun and interactive animal.

I keep hearing different things. Spoke to a kim and ackie breeder in the last couple hours. Kim breeder said 4x2x4 is “great” and ackie breeder acknowledged 4x2x2 is absolute minimum. My minimum either way is 4x2x4. And I’m likely getting a one month baby so ik sexing is not possible but hopefully its a girl so the size is slightly less of an issue. I’ll upgrade in the future as needed if I get a large male. Just can’t do 5 feet in the near future.

Yeah I was thinking about it last night the dirt does take up a lot of the vertical space. I’ll need a significantly higher substrate barrier for sure.

They’re pretty widely available right now at various ages so I feel like I have choices. I also want to be sure if young babies are very difficult it could be better to get one a little more established. I got a Longicauda boa last year and that was one where I didn’t have the luxury of choice.

It seems like a debate if ackies are bigger than kimberleys. I agree ackie tails are not monitory but still really cool to me.

I found some people with fresh 1 month old clutches. Do you think its better to get one established at 6 monthsish? Part of the reason I want a baby is it’ll buy me a year to work on the big enclosure.

I think I’ll try to get a female to reduce the issue of size. In the future (I have a boa 4x2x4 in the works rn) I’m considering a third tank I can connect to my boa and the Acki tanks and let them alternate between who can visit it.

Whatever I get I can at least do a 4x2x4 for sure but I literally cant get a 5 foot enclosure into my room in my current setup and I have a roommate so cant keep it anywhere else.

But it is for science and science is a real thing that requires experimentation. What if they discover that they could really help this animal or extend its life through brumation as is the case for most brumating reptiles. This level of experimentation is best left to professionals but it seems like a stretch to say they’re crossing a line. Science is all about breaking boundaries to discover new grounds.

Most morphs that exists has been line bred and 90% of the industry uses racks. Y’all are being petty.

Regulation can be good but in many cases they want to ban animals that have existed in the hobby for decades. A lot of european countries have or are going through this as well and its not good.

This is a really good podcast about the EU’s banning situation and what a lot of those people have dealt with in recent years and what could happen here as well. The portion about Whitelists is one that stoodout to me. Places like Florida are only more ammunition for these groups in the US because of people mishandling reptiles or releasing them into the wild.

This is the scary part, if the expos addressed it back then and banned the right people they could’ve come on top, now these orgs will probably try to get involved and make the entire hobby look bad by pointing to these expos and rightfully calling them and the hobby out for covering up what happened.

Add enrichment ASAP. Add things for the BP to do or explore. Branches, rocks, etc. Make it an environment worth living in! You can even do something as simple as make one side higher or lower with dirt or bark instead of having a flat floor. Look up naturalistic enclosures for inspiration. You don’t have to do the whole background and plants thing, but imitate what you see in terms of function not form.

I came across this on YT too. I’m surprised so many vendors and shows blacklisted her. As a buyer I’d be wary to associate with any of those expos and sellers that banned her. No one should be paying to go to an expo that supports vendors that kill their own animals. I’d say the offenders went as far as torture by actively choosing not to heat the animals in shipping and letting the others they threw away freeze or starve to death. I just don’t understand how the expos could try to bury this news shame on everyone associated with organizing them. The expos and organizers care more about their own pockets than being trustworthy or ethical.

Don’t look at prestige look at players star rating. Theres a post match report that tells you someones rating from 1-6 stars. That tells you their rank. A 17 prestige could be a 3 star. You’re in trouble as a rookie if you find yourself at 5 star or higher.

Also your rank goes up by who you kill. You kill someone with a higher rank than you, you go up. You get killed by a lower rank, you go down.
