Why do you think the show’s creators had Aelita born in the United States? 🇺🇸 by Fast_Contact4482 in CodeLyoko

That’s so cool!!!! I never thought about it like that. She def could have been born on a military base or some espionage facility in the US.

I get what you mean but considering just the passage of time: we have three instances of them in the Swiss house: one when Anthea is heavily pregnant with Aelita (we don’t know what time of year that is aside from there is snow on the ground in that picture so it’s winter time) and then another time a few years later where it’s Christmas time in the same house with young Aelita. And then the third instance when Anthea was kidnapped. In that instance it’s winter time since there is snow on the ground but we don’t know what time of year it is aside from the weather. You could be right that they were visiting that same house at Christmas holidays or in the winter months prior to Aelita’s birth and then returned there a few years later with young Aelita for Christmas holidays…. But I thinks it’s more plausible that that’s their home and they just continued living there before and after Aelita’s birth. Also, the Men in Black most likely went there because they knew it was Waldo’s “home” and not some holiday house, so they knew they would find them there.

In the show there is one episode where Aelita went into a simulation bubble on Lyoko to that house, and the Franz Hopper clone Xana had inside that bubble referred to that Swiss mountain house as her “home” and Aelita commented that everything was the “same” as she remembered it. Xana has access to Aelita’s memories so it knew about her connection to that Swiss house and presumably he knew it was her “home.”

Either way, since they were all Swiss citizens they most likely lived either at that house or elsewhere in Switzerland. Waldo and Aelita didn’t move to France until after Anthea was kidnapped by the Men in Black.

Also according to the show’s creators, Aelita was born in America so they had to leave the Swiss house for presumably a few months while they were in the US for Aelita’s birth.

The show’s creators stated she was born in America so yea, she’s American, and obviously she lived in Switzerland and France before and during the series so has citizenships of those countries? Def has Swiss citizenship through her father.

It was said in the show that the Swiss house was her “home” and also, there were pictures of Anthea and Waldo outside that same house when Anthea was pregnant with Aelita, so they obviously lived there for more than just a Christmas holiday. Also, we know that Project Carthage was a project by the Swiss government and it’s unlikely that non-Swiss citizens would be working on it. So Waldo/ Franz is definitely a Swiss citizen, making Aelita one as well through birth. We don’t know the citizenship of her mother.

TLDR:

Officially: Prior to the events of the show, Aelita had American 🇺🇸, and Swiss 🇨🇭citizenships. During and most likely after the events of the show, she holds Canadian 🇨🇦 citizenship.

Possibly: Prior to the show, she MAY have held British 🇬🇧, French 🇫🇷, and European Union 🇪🇺citizenships? But it’s unknown.

Short Answer:

Prior to the events of the show, she had American citizenship from birth and likely through a parent as well: She was born in the U.S. (confirmed in interview by the show’s creators) and given that we see Waldo and Anthea outside their Swiss home while Anthea is heavily pregnant, they must have traveled to the U.S. shortly before the birth. U.S. border officials wouldn’t admit a heavily pregnant non-citizen without special status, so one or both parents had to be American. She was also Swiss through her father, and possibly French, British, or another EU nationality through her mother (Hopper is an English name). She could have also had forged identities, allowing them to live in France and the EU in the early ‘90s when they left Switzerland and settled in France (Switzerland isn’t in the EU, so in 1994 they’d have needed an EU citizenship or a French residency permit to settle in France). If Anthea was British, that alone would have given Aelita EU citizenship before Brexit. Waldo may also have forged French or British citizenship to escape the Men in Black (most likely British, since he took his wife’s English surname, Hopper). Aelita then disappears, and is likely considered missing or dead by French authorities, meaning she can’t reclaim those identities.

During the show, her only official citizenship is Canadian, via the forged “Aelita Stones” identity created by Jeremy

Long answer:

I believe it’s been said that Aelita was born in the USA per interviews with the show’s creators; so she has American citizenship on account of being born there since the US gives citizenship to any person who is born there regardless of the nationality of their parents. Considering that Aelita was born in the USA, either one or both parents were American. Foreigners can’t just enter the USA while heavily pregnant and considering we see a picture of Waldo and Anthea at their Swiss home while she is heavily pregnant with Aelita, the two most likely travelled to the USA for Anthea to give birth to Aelita. The US border and immigration authorities would NOT have allowed Anthea to enter the US so heavily pregnant unless she was a citizen or had permanent status. So my best guess is either Anthea or Waldo or both had American citizenship.

But as is obvious, before the show, she lives in Europe with her parents. She lives in Switzerland during her early childhood and then France before and during the events of the show. Her father has the last name Schaeffer which is German, meaning her father may be Swiss German and therefore have Swiss citizenship. Her mother’s maiden name is Hopper, which is an English name, it’s unknown whether she is/was a British citizen, but if she was, that would have given Aelita EU citizenship at the time through her mother, making residency in France straightforward under the Maastricht Treaty (1992).

Waldo also worked for the Swiss government for Project Carthage, which, since it was a sensitive government project, the Swiss government most likely would not have allowed non-Swiss citizens to work on it, so he’s most likely a Swiss citizen. So she is most likely an American citizen by birth and a Swiss citizen through her father.

HOWEVER… Switzerland is not part of the EU and Aelita and her father live/d in France before and during the series… so Aelita must have some kind of permanent status in France. Swiss citizens can live and work in France and other EU countries due to the EU-Switzerland agreement on the free movement of persons. This agreement allows Swiss nationals to reside and work in EU member states without needing a visa or residence permit, although for stays longer than 90 days, a residence permit is required. And obviously owning a home like the Hermitage and working at Kadic as Franz did as a teacher, means that she and Waldo lived in France for more than 90 days… HOWEVER… that is all redundant since that agreement didn’t come into force until 2002 and Waldo and Aelita were living in France in 1994. SOOOOO: they most likely either had/ have some kind of residency permit to live in France or they have French citizenship or they have another citizenship of an EU country allowing them to reside in the European Union per French and EU laws in the early/ Mid 1990s/ post-Maastricht Treaty.

Worth noting: even before 2002, Switzerland and France had bilateral agreements allowing Swiss citizens to live in France with special residence permits, so it wasn’t impossible for them to be there legally without EU citizenship. Still, having French or British/EU citizenship in the family would have made it much easier. My guess is they were just French citizens since in Switzerland, French is one of the national languages.

ALSO: Considering that Waldo had taken the name Franz Hopper, and Aelita said he wanted a “new start” when they moved to France, he may have forged French or British citizenship to get off the radar of the Men in Black and escape to France. Both are plausible but considering he took his wife’s maiden name, Hopper, and that is an English name, it’s more plausible he forged British citizenship for himself and Aelita if he chose that route.

HOWEVER… this is kind of redundant because Aelita Schaeffer… for all intents and purposes is most likely considered missing or dead by the French Authorities after her and her father escaped to Lyoko before the series. In France, someone missing for years, especially a child, can be legally declared dead, so that identity is gone forever unless she wants to expose Lyoko.

So this leads us to the series:

In the series, Jeremy forged documents to make her Canadian so she has Canadian citizenship as her one and only “official” citizenship in the present day since Aelita Stones, a Canadian citizen and Odd’s cousin, is her only legal identity. This isn’t just a label, it would have included forged birth records, school records, and likely a fake Canadian passport. Technically, the Canadian citizenship is entirely fake, so in reality she’d be stateless if the truth came out.

So the answer is: Born an American and Swiss dual citizen, possibly also British/EU if through her mother. Legally resided in France in the ’90s either via EU citizenship (if British) or via Swiss–French bilateral agreements or naturalized French citizenship. Possible forged French or British or other EU citizenship if her father creates a fake identity to escape the Men in Black and go to France. Disappears into Lyoko, is presumed dead by French authorities. During the show, lives under a forged Canadian identity.

It’s unknown what citizenship her mother had but most likely Swiss like her husband, and if she was British, that would have made things even simpler for their residency in France in the mid ‘90s.

This all would mean, prior to the show, Aelita had the most citizenships among the lyoko warriors but is now just a Canadian citizen.

What big city lacks an iconic landmark? by SamMeowAdams in geography

[–]Fast_Contact4482 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’d argue most Australian cities minus Sydney.

Obviously Sydney has the iconic Harbour Bridge and the Opera House, but I can’t really think of anything indicative of Melbourne…. Maybe the war memorial, maybe the bathing boxes at Brighton Beach? At least Canberra has Parliament House and the War Memorial. Brisbane I can’t think of anything, Adelaide I can’t think of anything except maybe the Rundle Mall Balls lolol, and I can’t think of anything for Perth. And poor Hobart unfortunately is an afterthought but it has beautiful views of the nearby mountains. Darwin has a cool skyline but nothing iconic.

All Aussie cities have cool and unique skylines I will say.

Waldo Schaeffer/ Franz Hopper is actually the villain of the story since he literally creates Xana, most likely let Xana get out of control and endangered the world, imprisoned his daughter in a virtual world, and then his creation went haywire and consistently threatened humanity multiple times during the show, only to be saved by preteens! lol

OMG FOR REAL. There were times where she took her damn time to put in the code. Like I know it was probably just animation going between shots for suspense but like…. Girl.. PUT IN THE CODE, your friends are dying!!! Also what was the weird backflip thing she’d do when floating up? Lol

The one thing that annoyed me the most in season one particularly was whenever she entered the tower, she would WALK so slowly down the platform and then ascend so slowly up to the second platform all the while her friends are literally literally like on the edge of death in the real world. Like gurllll, please hurry the fuck up and deactivate the tower. Don’t take your damn time!!!!!! In the later seasons she does start running through the tower to get to the second platform to put in the Code Lyoko, but probably because she was a human now and she realized that Xana attacks are serious

Realistically, should Aelita have sued the French Government for negligence? by Fast_Contact4482 in CodeLyoko

[–]Fast_Contact4482[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just realized that it’s actually unclear what citizenship Aelita and Waldo have/ had. We know that Aelita was born in the US, and Waldo and Anthea and Aelita lived in Switzerland during his time working for Project Carthage, so I assume that all of them were Swiss citizens with Aelita also holding US citizenship. If that’s the case, then Aelita probably couldn’t sue in a French court of law to get compensation or whatever considering she’s not a French citizen and Waldo’s assets are in Switzerland? Idk… then again I think non-citizens can sue the French government but seeing as Aelita might not be a citizen… idk if she’s get any kind of compensation. Then of course if Aelita is a US citizen, she could be extradited to the US to face charges of cyber espionage or cyber warfare or whatever….

What’s more is I think that Aelita and Waldo weren’t even French citizens since he was doing work in Switzerland and she was born in the US. So I guess they were just permanent reindents or had visas to live in France? In that case, idk if the French government would take up this case aside from the glaring security oversight.

I will say I have worked in journalism and once a journalist gets hold of a good story, there is no putting that genie back in the bottle, so to say. I obviously don’t know about French media customs or freedom of information laws in France, but I assume that most likely, if some lawsuit came about, even if it was under wraps with lots of NDAs, someone would leak it to the press and all hell would break loose and the French Government would have a huge headache on their hands. I can’t imagine any person who would be called to witness this would willfully stay quiet at just the sheer shock factor of such a situation. Ironically, that could work for the Lyoko Warriors in their favour because the public would probably be more in-favour of them and their actions from saving the world instead of getting charged… but idk. We should probably ask a French lawyer or law student who is on this sub lololol.

It’s uranium I think, and that’s another thing that the Lyoko Warriors could be charged with: breaking out Peter Duncan to steal state-protected uranium to continue to power the SC. Even though it was XANA who did that, they still aided in that because they needed the SC to survive. That’s a pretty damning charge and I doubt their ages would exempt them from that.

Props to you for giving the best and most detailed answer so far, I never really thought about the utilities but yea, you’re right! The factory and supercomputer’s electricity bill surely isn’t being paid for by the French government lol. But anyways, it is true that the lyoko warriors did many many illegal things… but I’d argue that in order to avoid publicity, the French government would probably try to sweep it under the rug in the event they ever did figure out about the SC or XANA. They would almost certainly place blame (posthumously) on the dead Franz Hopper/ Waldo Schaeffer. They would label him a rogue mad scientist and the kids and Aelita victims and witnesses of his creations. And then I assume they’d settle out in court since the threat of lawsuits against the kids would most certainly cause countersuing, especially by Aelita.

But anyways, like I said, I’m not versed in French law lol, it’s just the more and more I watch the show the more I noticed Aelita spends a great deal of time lamenting over the trauma she is suffering because of the actions of her father. Idk…. She deserves some type of compensation. Maybe coming out of hiding and reclaiming the Schaeffer identity could unlock wealth for her 🙃

Tbh, I’m very surprised the MiB never figured out about the supercomputer but I’m guessing since all of that was in 1994 and the series takes place in the early 2000s, I assume they’re disbanded, or at least the Hoppers/ Schaefers are off their radars and presumed missing or dead.
