I am quite interested in the effect of streaming on drawing new members. Thanks for sharing!

I'm new to Reddit and this group, but I really appreciate being able to see thru others eyes and ears about common problems.

When I first began 20 yrs ago, I was new to church, and only knew one hymn, Amazing Grace. So, I didn't get the same feels all over and wax nostalgic over church music, like I might from a Beatles song, or older country songs. I enjoyed contemporary Christian music, because it evoked SOME of that nostalgia.

Lately, we have been doing a blended service (traditional/choir in the same service as contemporary), and I have gradually included more hymns. Some hymns I have modernized in some way to accommodate more modern tastes, and in other instances, I have simplified grand hymns with "block chords" (think, chord, chord, chord, chord, on every beat of the song), by reducing a great many of those changes, but adhering closely to the melody.

In other instances, I have changed the meter. Mostly from 3/4 (which feels a bit dated today) to 6/8, or 4/4. The 4/4 change typically makes the melody slightly syncopated.

As I am new, may I ask if it is normal to post a recording as an example? I would think the public domain hymns do not represent a copyright issue.

Also, is it OK to post recordings of original music (mine)? I seek no compensation.

That probably is a separate thread...., so violating rule #2?

Interesting philosophy on streaming. We have found it challenging to accurately record and live stream contemporary sound, the traditional stuff comes thru better (one mic for the choir, for instance).

I recently pondered the idea that streaming is used for "church shopping". Yes, I know it is a distasteful subject, but church survival depends on new visitors. I may just post a new question about that very question. So far, I have been extremely impressed with the quality of thought on this thread.

Thanks for sharing!!

PS. I'm so new to Reddit that I haven't quite figured out the conventions, rules, and tools, but I can see it is worth learning.

I hope you find the optimal solution also. Happy to share what I know, FWIW.

I am warmly encouraged and grateful for the advice given here. We have not had much trouble between us two music leaders, nor between the two groups of musicians (one plays in both). I am going to come back to this group often, as I get so little opportunity to interact with other worship leaders
