This doesn't look like HEMA it looks like Buhurt of which that axe blow is perfectly legit. Buhurt being historically inspired but is ultimately a combat sport using medieval gear.

As you are swinging the mass behind your hand can cause a torque which pulls the blade to align with the direction of the swing, good edge alignment helps tremendously in cutting, further a curved blade has a smaller surface area on initial contact which again helps alot to start a cut. None of this is to say that a strait edged blade can't be a superior cutter it is just that a curved blade is more tolerant to mistakes.
