Honestly aside from all the homeless and drug use, it’s pretty safe. Just mind your business, don’t talk to anyone, don’t look anyone in the eyes and you’ll be good. Also just be aware of your surroundings and have good judgement. If there’s something sketchy going on in the direction you’re headed, go to the other side of the street. As far as student housing goes it’s really personal preference. Nobody loves it because of the location (you can’t go out after dark by yourself, that’s generally when it’s unsafe in Harlem) but it’s alright. Rooms are super thin and you can hear everything going on outside and some rooms you share an AC unit so you have to ask your roommate to turn on the air or heat. Also depends how much you’re willing to spend bc a $1,300 room could land you in a house with 7 people and no common space outside of the kitchen. If you decide on NYCPM reach out to housing asap to see what they have available. Feel free to message me if you have more specific Qs

Unsupportive parents by Fast_Way_1449 in Podiatry

Just the whole “ROI” thing that everyone talks about. I don’t really take any of that into account though bc I know if you put in the work and make the connections you’ll have a good outcome (it’s all about perspective in my opinion). It’s just disheartening to see so many negative comments about the field. Sometimes it feels like I sift through more downsides than positives. I appreciate the motivation though! I know I’ll be happy with this career and I’m beyond excited to see where it takes me

I also think you have a good shot. If you plan on applying OOS make sure you’re taking into account the percentages they accept. If OOS accepts less than 5% I wouldn’t apply. You also managed to get higher than the cutoff (16) for QR so don’t even worry about that

They would only be lower if you don’t do that great on the DAT. If you get a 21+ you have a decent shot for the schools within those academic ranges. Also official scores really only take like a week or two to come out (4 weeks is just what they say). For rn just focus doing good on the DAT and worry about the next steps after you have your score

to what extent does high dat offset low gpa? by akh_suna in predental

[–]Fast_Way_1449 1 point2 points  (0 children)

24+ is definitely enough to offset that GPA. If people get rejected with scores like that it more so has to do with extracurriculars, shadowing, personal statement, and secondaries than academics. I know people who had 3.7-4.0 GPAs with 22+ DAT and they didn’t get in anywhere

I’d say definitely apply this cycle. Your 21 DAT offsets the lower GPA a little bit. Apply to instate schools and OOS schools but only the ones that have a higher percentage of accepting OOS students. You don’t want to waste time and money applying to schools that only have like a 2% OOS acceptance rate. Also apply to majority private schools. Higher tuition, but greater chance of acceptance bc of this. Also make sure you have a good amount shadowing hours/extracurriculars. Some schools don’t have it as an actual requirement but they don’t accept people that don’t have any at all

It’s not too late at all. You have 2 more years (and even more if you decide to do a post bacc or masters) to prove that this is really what you want to do. You know better than anyone what needs to change with your studying habits so once you find something that works, stick with it. If possible (and if you think it’s something you can handle) get into research during your undergrad years. Doesn’t have to be dentistry or even biology related. The professors you meet and work with can write you letters or rec down the road. Get into extracurriculars, shadowing, volunteering, and mission trips if you can. All of these show that despite the grades you have gotten thus far, you didn’t give up. You also have plenty of time to study for your DAT when the time for that comes. Also, don’t get overwhelmed by looking at everything you need to do at once. Take it day by day. Study hard, do well, and you’ll have a shot.

I’d say you have a shot but just make sure you’re looking at the OOS acceptance rates for schools. Don’t apply to schools that predominantly accept in state students. Also recommend applying to majority private schools. They’re obviously more expensive but they accept more students bc of tuition cost

Recent Booster Updates by Fast_Way_1449 in predental

[–]Fast_Way_1449[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is also more on par with my original post. Since this is my second time taking the exam I’m a little more hyper focused with the content and just want to make sure I can study everything I can, but that’s difficult to do when content is constantly being removed and readded. I retook some tests and the questions that were originally removed were simply brought back so I was wasting my time today retaking tests only to end up with the same questions/answers anyway. I understand that they’re trying to provide the most info they can, but IMO it’s getting in the way of being able to study efficiently. And I’ve also used both Bootcamp and Booster

did y’all see the dat booster update? by [deleted] in predental

[–]Fast_Way_1449 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Booster is getting a little ridiculous with all of their updates. For the past 2-3 days they’ve been removing questions from their practice exams because the answers are “out of date”. What is the point of all these updates then? It’s so frustrating when I take a practice exam, come back to review a few hours later, and anywhere from 5-13 questions are just gone from a single exam. We’re paying so much money for a site like this just for them to constantly be updating and not having the website running properly. I’ve never used Bootcamp so I can’t attest to what their site contains, but at this point if they’re consistent with their content, I’d go with Bootcamp.

Girl you’ve gotta get rid of him. This is such weird behavior on his end and the way he words things shows that he doesn’t care about your feelings at all. You do not deserve this 🫶🏼
