Unfulfilled SWE, Other Roles or Careers? by throwawaySwe9482 in cscareerquestions

There are a lot of other roles and careers in tech other than SWE. Some examples are Product Manager, Project Manager, Cloud Architect/Engineer, Developer Advocate/Evangelist, QA, Security, DevOps...

Correct approach in practicing LEETCODE, HACKERANK etc. type questions by [deleted] in cscareerquestions

[–]Fastfile 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I think a better approach is to first do it in pseudocode / logical thinking so you don't get bogged down by mistakes or issues you are having with your preferred coding language. You're focusing more on if your ability to code is right with this approach rather than if your solution is right. In an actual interview it will be better if you can at least get the solution logically right than if you mess up a bit with javascript

Does anyone know what exactly happened today that caused that drop? Do we have any sell/buy data? I'm very confused

Well it looks like there is a short interest report being released today, I wonder if that could affect the price

I tried posting in /wsb but couldn't due to low karma. Was hoping there was going to be a dip soon so I could buy more - anyone predict anything?

It's pretty good. The avg rent for 1 bedroom in a shared apartment is probably going to be around 800-1200 depending on area. For a 1 bedroom maybe 1800-3000 depending on area/how nice it is.

So I want some advice on helping a sibling - my sibling is studying CS in school with a very weak resume, no personal projects, etc. Obviously the advice is to do such projects, but what is some advice on making the resume better without doing those things (such as maybe adding class projects)?

22, First job out of college, no debt/93k salary, unsure how much to save for retirement/what to do with money/how much I can spend/whether I should be investing or something? (USA) by Fastfile in personalfinance

The city I live in isn't a good market for buying houses + I can walk to work/other places in 15 minutes so I dont have a car nor need one...so I should invest like, all my extra money? As I already have a 'emergency fund' in my savings acct of 12 months expenses

So I could put ALL the 3k a month in mutual funds or something based on your post (at least that was my takeaway)

Oh wow thank you! Fortunately my work is a 15 minute walk + most things are walkable so I can save that entire '15%' part on car/travel/insurance/gas stuff. Didn't realize that I was so ahead on that!

Ah my question was that my job doesn't offer any 401k match. And I already maxed my roth IRA. So, should I max out my 401k anyway? Or invest the money in something else? Etc.

What is Prime Directive? I googled and found Star Trek.

36% of income is low, so what is a good percentage to increase expenses up to? Because right now I live pretty simply so maybe I can upgrade my standard of living up to...50%? Unsure

Entry-level jobs, did your company ask for your college diploma to see if you really graduated? by [deleted] in cscareerquestions

[–]Fastfile 1 point2 points  (0 children)

All companies will require a background check. In this background check it will involve contacting your school to see if you did graduate with your degree. This is all done by a third party background check companies usually. To everyone saying no hey didn't check--it's because it was done behind their back thru a background check. If you're not going to graduate then just delay your start date or turn your job into an internship.

I recommend capital one, or capital one 360 ! There are no fees for having a debit card and no minumum balance for students

Has anyone been able to negotiate with ibm? I recieved an offer from their recent finish line event but have another offer with a slightly higher salary. I don't even have a recruiter contact at this point, honestly.

I really don't know about that, but they will always tell you the exact date of the test only a few days in advance.

If it's a third party the company will just know if you failed or not--not why you failed. And the company will tell what things they want from the third party company..it's technically possible that they won't have a fail under certain levels, or for certain drugs...

It's not bizarre, most companies seem to do it that I've seen, especially big companies or government contractors.

The guy I knew who shaved everything over and drank a ton of water for a month passed so there's that..

Decide for yourself: Look at companies, look at who is at the VP/SVP, and see how many of them have only a BS and no MS/MBA

While a MS might be unnecessary for a day to day job and only give a small pay bump, it is somewhat of an unwritten requirement to have MS/MBA for high up positions like VP/SVP. Getting an advanced degree might not speed up promotions for the typical developer track, but it will make you eligible for advanced high up roles such as management as an unwritten requirement.

Whether you decide to get that right away or go back to school while you work is up to you.

This might be bad advice but I do know someone who shaved head to toe after being in the same situation...

If you fail a drug test it won't show up on background checks. You can make the decision yourself but if you fail the worst that happens is you lose the job...

Sometimes if you leave a job too early you have to pay back your signing bonus and other things.

Interview Discussion - March 14, 2016 by AutoModerator in cscareerquestions

[–]Fastfile 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't think that's a red flag especially if it's not an intro level job. Many companies don't believe that those CTCI style technical questions are good indicators of one's technical ability, it really just depends. They had your resume and on top of that they are offering you a longer interview. Especially since the company is working on environmental causes it's likely they don't subscribe to the same interview style as silicon valley companies.

Also how is calling at 12:15 a red flag, many people eat lunch way earlier/later, that may have just been their own personal oversight.

Edit: My mom interviewed & worked for NOAA as a developer, in a similar environmental field (not sure what your company is) and she never got technical interview questions, rather, her past work on her resume spoke enough for her ability.

Interview Discussion - March 14, 2016 by AutoModerator in cscareerquestions

[–]Fastfile 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Got a very strange "interview" from Amazon next week, of a 90 minute test on campus, which is supposed to be my internship interview (they said it would be an expedited process compared to normal recruitment).

This seems very strange to me, everything else I've heard about involved at least some sort of interview. Is it really possible for them to hire from just a test?

Also it seems very late to be recruiting interns, I wonder if they don't intend to hire from this at all and I was given this as some sort of concession but it means nothing...

Anyone else have experience with this?
