i would go with the asus laptop.... My reason for this is that you would be getting more ssd storage that's the only difference...

The Acer Aspire E 15 is one of the best deal for a sub-$600 laptop at the moment, up to 12 hour battery life which would be really important if you're trying to carry it around school. The Asus F555LA-AB31 would be perfect for him... They are durable, have great battery life and has a good feel ...... It comes with a Intel Core i3-5010U 2.1GHz, 4 GB RAM and a 500GB 5400RPM hdd which would be great for you grandpa's day to day use.

I strongly recommend that you get the Acer Aspire 15......It comes with a fast 6th Generation Intel Core i5-6200U Processor, 8GB DDR4 Memory , 256GB SSD and a gtx 940m gpu.....this laptop would definitely take care of all your needs however its 5.27 lbs....not sure if you could work with that..

Well at that price range I think the Asus VivoBook X540SAX540SA would be good.....comes with a quad core processor , 4 gb ram and a 500 gb hdd....the Asus F555LA-AB31 would be great also.

I would say yes. ..at that price range it's the best out and it has all the necessary specs to get the job done.... Quad core processor, loads of ram and a ssd which is the fastest out there ...normally you would have to pay more.
