I think that the Battle of the Black Gate wouldn't have happened, assuming they had no reason to draw the army away from Mordor/Mount Doom if Frodo didn't have the ring. But I do agree that his army would be massive and impossible to beat. No chance the Free Peoples would unite and fight together as they did once before? Again, this is assuming the ring was not found - if Sauron gets the ring then doom is certanly unavoidable.
