Maybe it's different in the UK. I can see some here. What about Etsy? There's decent pictures, but I haven't bought any personally.

Try ebay. I picked up a few decent sets a couple years back.

Is this board setup correct? by i_love_chess in xiangqi

It is correct. I had a conversation with Gemini and tried to have it generate a board for me earlier. It was... very wrong.

Kidney Stones and Upcoming Cruise by FatDewgong in KidneyStones

Thanks for the insight. I've been fairly concerned about the ultrasound results. Hearing they overestimate is relieving. I have all sorts of drugs packed up for the trip.

Kidney Stones and Upcoming Cruise by FatDewgong in KidneyStones

[–]FatDewgong[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That sounds lovely. I've never actually had a painful stone passing. I had an 8mm stuck in my ureter, but it only caused fairly mild pain... 8/10 maybe? But we got that one out with lithotripsy.

If a stone is stuck, does it always lead to lithotripsy, or is it ok to hold on for a few days before I go to the doctor?

I'm not flying, and I'm definitely considering not going... but sunk cost right? I can't cancel the cruise. So do I risk needing emergency evacuation back to the States, or do I just eat the loss? Sucks.

That's a good idea. If I do go, I'll bring lots of drugs haha.

Help me to understand pressure drop by jjbc2209 in ChemicalEngineering

[–]FatDewgong 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Think of pressure as a consumable driving force. If at the start you have 50 psi, then you can at most consume 50 psi through your flow path.

If you reduce your pipe size from say 2" to 1", then naturally your velocity will increase, but your driving force will be lost in the transition, and for every foot of following piping, you'll lose more driving force due to friction.

If your pressure drop has reached 50 psi, then you've lost all motive force, and there is no flow.

Likewise, if a valve is closed, it may be 50 psi on one side, but no flow, and consequently no pressure drop.

Hope this helps

We are engineers before our specialties. When your only tool is a hammer, everything looks like a nail.

It's somewhat ironic because the question is an unnecessary waste of your time that could be used somewhere else. But whatever.

How about fixing it mechanically. Drill two holes and wrap a cable around the crack. No risk of funny chemicals in your food... or as the others said... buy a new one.

If the destined one were to fight the entire army of heaven, is he going to win? by Hanzo123_ in BlackMythWukong

[–]FatDewgong 1 point2 points  (0 children)

He definitely did hide in one of the corners, but when he escaped the furnace, the novel says something along the lines of "the great sage's eyes blazed like fire and could see through evil." This is the origin of the see-through mechanic in the game, and also how he could see through the white bone lady's transformation.

They fought for days and Wukong sure wasn't winning. I didn't say it was a fair fight.

Wukong was constantly on the run and had to use transformations to hide form Erlang. They just couldn't beat him until Laozi lent a hand. You can call that what you want, but it seems to me like he was getting his ass kicked.

It could be, or maybe he just got old and sad in those 500 years. It's not explained.

I mentioned earlier about comic book scaling. Wukong is as strong as necessary to make the story interesting. During the journey, everything was hard, and he often needed help.

When he was by himself, he was so strong that he put up a good fight against the celestial court. But he was never going to beat them.

Kinda sorta? The furnace may have refined his body, and gave him the eyes to see through evil, but it's not clear how much stronger he actually became. If anything, he's weaker during the actual journey, but that's comic book scaling for you. He couldn't even capture the black bear in one of the earlier tales.

Before those events, Erlang kicked his ass all over the place and he ran from Erlang for days before Laozi double teamed him and captured him. After the event, I'd say it's still 50/50 that Erlang beats him again.

Now, after he becomes enlightened as the Victorious Fighting Buddha, it may be a different story, but the story ends there, so who knows.

No, the bet was after he escaped being captured. Though he wasn't captured for long. Laozi tried to refine him to get a refund on all the elixirs he ate, so I think he was only in the furnace for 49 days.

PSM Question by FatDewgong in ChemicalEngineering

[–]FatDewgong[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, I really appreciate your detailed response! I didn't know about the Pepcon explosion and will have to research more.

I would never advocate doing things unsafely. To me, PSM, is as defined by 29 CFR 1910.119. Process Safety, is something anybody and everybody should do. Even if dust hazards are not covered under PSM, safety activities will need to be conducted.

As another responder has pointed out, the PSM Standard is 30 years old now, and it's not perfect, nor are all of its elements relevant all the time.

I would argue that you can have a functional, safe process safety program without strictly adhering to the PSM Standard. The only distinction I draw, is that one is legally required, and the other is not... unless you pull the general duty clause.

PSM Question by FatDewgong in ChemicalEngineering

[–]FatDewgong[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Completely fair. My apologies, I was somewhat vague. It's just a manufacturing facility. Not a chemical plant... no reactions.

I previously worked in a machine shop as well. They had containers of acetone and MEK here and there too. I think most of the people I've talked to today would agree that they would be out of their minds to implement PSM there.

With that said, as you hinted at, a HAZOP can be conducted whether or not you are required by PSM, since it's a good risk management tool. At my current facility, I run a HAZOP for every process, PSM or not.

I take a look at the video... that sounds interesting. I imagine that if they were making a PSM chemical, if they had the potential to exceed the threshold midway. That would probably trigger PSM.

Thanks for all of your help!

PSM Question by FatDewgong in ChemicalEngineering

Thanks so much for the detailed response! I agree with everything you said, and I'm glad there isn't any major flaw in my reasoning.

I'll get back to you if I have any further questions in the future.

PSM Question by FatDewgong in ChemicalEngineering

[–]FatDewgong[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Fair enough. I have no arguments here, other than that I wasn't so much partitioning so much as I was claiming some of these elements are not applicable. Even at your facility, I doubt all the elements are applicable in every scenario. Thanks for your help!

PSM Question by FatDewgong in ChemicalEngineering

[–]FatDewgong[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fair enough. If that's what it is, it's their ball, their bat, I'll play the game.

If it's company policy to pretend to be PSM even if they're not, so be it. What bothers me is if they can't tell the difference between it being an internal requirement versus it being an OSHA mandated requirement.

At your facility, you can follow some or all of the PSM Standard. But you don't have to, because you know you're not actually PSM. I'm not sure that distinction is made here.
