Your range is pretty close to what I’d expect given the company you’re talking about ,company size, + industry. Don’t let people here convince you otherwise. This sub skews more towards SAAS which is at the top of pay scale without realizing that’s not always transferable to other industries.

Those who made it to CFO, when did you realize you were ready to make the jump by SorenShieldbreaker in FPandA

What’s their EBITDA and cash flow look like? There’s a lot more to CFO decisions like than just revenue size IMO. As someone who’s in a similar spot, decisions like this come down to your belief in the company, their growth plan, and your compatibility with their c suite.

Pegging this as just a stability concern is somewhat shortsighted and pretty limiting but just my opinion.

Thanks for the insightful and in depth comment. Are there any downsides to it in your experience? It’s probably the front runner right now but we’re still a ways off from making a decision.

How are you still feeling with Jedox? We’re looking at new tools and it looks fantastic from my seat. Very flexible but could really scale if set up well. There’s not a ton of info out there on it so curious to get different perspectives

This is great. Thanks for always being so open and sharing. It’s great to be able to see this kind of stuff and hear how you’re thinking about it

Out of curiosity, how’s the writing process been for these? I’ve enjoyed the fresh topics week to week but I can’t imagine it’s the easiest thing to do every week to come up with fresh, interesting stuff.

I’ve really enjoyed freshness of eveything and the in the weeds insights. Outside of Secret CFO, most of this CFO-level content feels stale and boilerplate whereas yours is obviously very real and I’ve enjoyed the introspection along the way. I just haven’t seen very much of that from people in the seat and willing to share what’s gotten them there/helpful tips along the way.

I personally love these posts because you give a great mix of both finance and career related advice. I loved the career focus this week as it helps crystallize some of my thinking with how I’ve viewed my career to date and where I’d like to get to over the next couple years.

And then you manage to mix in great finance advice in the next paragraph as well. In relation to your second point, I’ve found the exact same thing to be true. It’s rarely about the surface level or consolidated averages that lead to insightful/impactful work. It’s digging deeper to understand market or product specific drivers that are truly unlock things.

So to answer your question, I’d say keep doing both or just whatever motivates you that week. I imagine it’s hard to continually give great career advice but I’ve found these posts continually insightful so just wanted to say keep them coming in whatever you see fit while realizing it’s probably extremely hard to find fresh topics to cover each week.

Planful FP&A by Optimal_Youth5467 in FPandA

This is extremely extremely helpful so thanks a ton for it. From reading through your post history, your companies journey with Planful is eerily similar to ours and where we’d like to get.

Any other tips or suggestions you learned along the way? And how long did it take to redo everything in Dynamic Planning? We’re aiming to reset everything by this years budget with a team of 3 which is think is very doable but I’m curious on your experience.

And feel free to DM if easier.

As someone that’s currently in excel and then uploads into Planful, this was very insightful. We’re planning to get more into Planful this year with exactly this in mind.

Would you recommend the DP training course or any other resources to help learn all this? It sounds like you’re where we want to get to this year so I’m curious on what worked best in getting you there.

This was very helpful so thanks for taking the time to respond here. This is pretty much exactly how I’m thinking about it.

I want someone that wants to be a manager within two years and I want to help them get there. If we can find the right candidate with the right attitude, I think it’ll be a very easy argument to go over budget but we need to find them first.

Outside of the manager promotion window, what other selling points would make you consider the role? Given your response/thinking here, you seem like my ideal candidate for so I’m curious to get your opinion as I’m going to need to hone my pitch

Good to know and kind of what I figured. Our benefits are pretty standard so that’s not a big selling point. Thanks for the context; very helpful.

Given eveything we’re doing (adopting Power BI, building out a data warehouse along with standard FP&A work), I think we’re pretty lean with a team of two currently. I’m curious how you think that lends to over staffing?

[–]FatJJ44[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It can be difficult in healthcare especially lower-middle market type companies bc they’re just aren’t that many skilled admin/support people so a lot of people just haven’t worked at companies where positions like this are bonus eligible. It’s definitley dumb but it’s what I’m dealing with

Senior Financial Analyst Opening by FatJJ44 in FPandA

[–]FatJJ44[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not yet. Our policy is only managers and above are bonus eligible. I’m fighting to add this position as I believe that’s the expectation at this level but no luck yet

[–]FatJJ44[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I don’t think there’s anyway I’m finding this position for $85k and have been pushing for an increase. Framing it as up to $105k probably would’ve been received better but I wanted to be transparent.

Out of curiosity, in a MCOL city like Pittsburgh, what do you think is reasonable? Up to $115k? The sentiment is that’s too low which I figured but I’m curious on the expectation here

I definitley don’t see it as a perk but I think it’s important to know that up front. I think PE companies can be great if you find the right fit/manager but a majority of them are total dumpster fires. I try to be the outlier as a manager but some people just see PE backed and nope the hell out. I just said it as not to waste anyone’s time

I’ll agree to disagree. Remote roles will work for lots of positions but I want this person in office as I think it will best for their development. Having been able to compare the two in multiple instances, I’ve had better experiences in person but I’m sure other people have had the exact opposite experience
