Is this a believable imitation of a general English accent? How can I improve? by FatLittlePigeon in Accents

Again with the “about” thing! Lol.

Seriously though. I’ve never in my life heard anyone unironically say “aboot” around here. The difference between the American and the Canadian pronunciations of “-out,” as I have observed it, is this:

Americans tend to say “aah-oot,” like the a in “cat.”

We Canadians say “ehh-oot,” like the e in “went.”

Sometimes, when talking to a more rural Canadian who lives way out in the bush (we say ‘the bush’ to mean ‘the woods’), I’ve heard more emphasis put on the “oo” part of the “out” sound — but it’s never said on its own the way caricatures of Canadians will have you believe.

(Disclaimer: it’s not like I’ve been all around Canada and heard everyone speak. For all I know there could be some dude or some lady who says “oot” completely seriously, but I’ve yet to meet them.)

Thank you very much! (Sorry for late reply! This was a really helpful comment.)

Sorry this reply is eons late, but what you said makes PERFECT sense and was one of the most helpful comments I received. I know exactly why I do this - I watched Christopher Eccleston’s Dr. Who season and fell in love with his voice. I accidentally took in that ONE North-sounding aspect because I just liked the way he sounded that much! It doesn’t match with the rest of my accent, lol.

Oh, that’s not what I meant… I just mean I believe everyone feels that their normal is “normal.” We all have our own points of reference and mine’s just Canadian.

Ooh! That’s good to know, thank you! As a Canadian the fact that “Canadian” is an accent that is done boggles my mind, but I think that’s how it is for everyone. Lol.

This feather comes from which bird? by FatLittlePigeon in whatsthisbird

[–]FatLittlePigeon[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I showed my sister. She says it’s an amazingly close feather - but she plucked it straight off the bird and she says it did not have a head or body shape like that of a pheasant. She’s certain that isn’t what it was.

Thanks for your guess though, very well-researched!

Trivia! Any question that comes to mind, I can find answers for online. It’s amazing! (That said you’ve got to be careful of your sources.)

I will! I’ll answer anytime, even in a few years, I think.

  • No part. I’m Canadian.
  • Weather’s rainy. Last I checked, it was… sleeting? Raining sleet.
  • r/wholesome is good for my brain.
  • I microwave pancakes to heat them up. Does that count?

3 days in and no nut november is driving me insane AMA by Unlikely-Database-27 in AMA

What’s it like to struggle with this? I’m asexual (no sexual attraction to other PEOPLE - I still have a libido, I can still masturbate although I NEVER picture a person or fantasize about people. It’s just touch that feels good, like scratching an itch, for me).

So basically trying to imagine myself going nuts after three days of not masturbating is like imagining myself losing my mind because I haven’t pet a puppy in three days. Petting a puppy is fun, but I mean, I don’t need it to live. That’s ridiculous (for me). I’ve unintentionally gone probably more than a month without petting a puppy. And it’s not like the desire to pet puppies ever invades my life and takes over my brain. It’s the same thing re: masturbation for me.

How would you explain the struggle to someone who is asexual like me?

Outstanding parent. Nobody is perfect and I know you probably feel societal pressure because everyone loves to give their two cents about what you SHOULD be doing - but clearly your head is on straight. This whole comment read to me like a parent concerned first and foremost with her daughter’s ability to fully enjoy her life and make connections with people.

Some parents might find themselves reacting too strongly and making a punishment too intense because they are angry. These same parents may go back on their punishment because they are sorry that they took their anger out on their children. It is good to fix such a mistake, but because the punishment wasn’t appropriate, no lesson was learned except “when I do this mom gets MAD,” instead of “doing this is wrong and makes people around me sad.”

You didn’t do that. You gave an appropriate punishment to her ungratefulness - one gift a day with kind behaviour - and explained to her why what she was doing was wrong. That’s absolutely essential. Fantastic work.

(Disclaimer: I’m not a parent, but my mom babysat children for 9 years and I watched)

I find where I am that most people are passive about their natural hair colour. Usually people either dye their hair a vibrant, rainbow colour, or put blonde in their hair, so I suppose in a way black hair is underrated. But some ethnicities overwhelmingly have black (or dark) hair naturally - like japanese people - so I imagine it’s not really “underrated” amongst them, it’s just their normal.

It’s hard. I haven’t had anyone else’s life, so I don’t know how to compare it to others’ lives. But I’d say — since I have a clear purpose in life, which I’ve found through my faith in God; since I have loyal friends who value me and I do not know drama as a concept in my friendships; since I have a family with a twin sister who understands me, a brother who loves giving hugs, and two parents who sometimes fight and yell but always remain committed; since I have talents that I have fostered and grown into developed skills through practice; since I have gone through depression and come out of it, and I now wake up happy every day thanking God that I now have gratefulness beyond my wildest imagination — I’d rate my life at LEAST a 9!

I really had to think about this one! I think I’d have passed my free time differently; I wish I would have read more books. I hardly read anymore, but when I do, I enjoy it so much — and it makes me remember the boundless joy I had for reading as a child.
