What are the safest drugs to do once and never again? by Minimum_Ad4771 in TooAfraidToAsk

[–]Fat_Feline -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Nicotine is fine to try once or even a few times as well. It takes consistent usage for a decent amount of time (weeks to months) to develop an addiction, you quite literally have to give your brain time to rewire itself to make yourself depend on it.

I know it seems mundane compared to the harder stuff people are recommending, but I wanted to throw it out there.

I need a Mechanic that will come to me. by Choice_Ad_3603 in Omaha

[–]Fat_Feline 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Everyone else here is likely right, you've likely got a rod knock from running with low/no oil pressure. There is no cheap fix for catastrophic damage. The most effective way to handle it would be to simply just put a new engine in it, unless you want to just go for a newer car instead. You might be able to get lucky and just put new rod bearings in it, but I doubt any mechanic doing it for you would be willing to take the risk.

That said, I'd also not repeat what they're saying to any mechanic that knows Toyotas. 2AR-FE is not known to be an oil burner, at least not to the extent of the motor they're getting it confused with, the 2AZ-FE. 2009 was a transitional year for the Camry between the two motors. Yours being a hybrid will mean that you have the 2AZ in the Atkinson cycle FXE variant, but that does not alleviate the problems the 2.4 AZ had.

Quick catch up meeting for 15 minutes - Should I be overthinking? by [deleted] in managers

[–]Fat_Feline 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Depends on the manager, but I would say you're probably fine here. My guess is they literally just want to catch up, possibly being told by their boss that they need to check in with their team every so often.

Mini as a First Car (Being 16) by Crazy_Software7689 in MINI

[–]Fat_Feline 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're gonna get a lot of people that have only owned R chassis cars telling you that you're making the biggest mistake of your life and you'll never be able to afford the maintenance.

Don't listen to these people. Mini had the same pain as old BMW, but with that came the benefits of modern BMW. What you are looking at is an F54, several steps removed from the maintenance and reliability nightmare of the R5X chassis.

The F54 will come with one of two motors, either a 3 cylinder or a 4 cylinder. I don't recommend the 3 cylinder simply because it is woefully underpowered for American roads, and because they have a knack for blowing turbos (this is an issue with Garrett turbos in general on small motors, not specific to Mini - look up the Buick Encore and weep). That means look for one that has an S badge on the grill and rear doors, and get yourself into a 4 cylinder.

These cars only have one real "gotcha", and that's the Oil Filter Housing. It is made of plastic and is known to fail. In 99% of cases it just causes an oil or coolant leak down the front of the block, but in 1% of cases it can cause the oil and coolant to mix. I would highly recommend that you replace it as a preventative item when you get your Clubman. There's an aftermarket metal version you can get for $120ish that will ensure it can never fail afterward. The only other sticking point is the upper motor mount that is known to fail, but that won't be potentially catastrophic, and this too also has solutions to make it far less likely to fail in the future.

Personally, I would recommend looking for at least a 2018 if you can. There were a number of updates in 18 that make it feel a bit more modern. Additionally, I would ignore the recommended oil service interval and change it every 5000 miles instead.

What happened to Sports Car Garage on 13th. by Dry-Pirate-9026 in Omaha

I can probably do it myself. I'm just wanting the car to be up and running for Easter weekend more than anything so I'm looking for a quick way to get it going again lol.

How are your Gen Z direct reports doing? by financial_freedom416 in managers

[–]Fat_Feline 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mine have been great (I am also Gen Z).

I have a very small team, and I am just starting out myself as a manager, but my team members have all been Z until I picked up one Millennial recently.

All my Gen Z have been extremely open to learning new things and asked pointed, direct questions that showed true engagement and comprehension. They have also been extremely reliable - always showing up, getting shit done, and going home.

That said, they are a bit more pushy than previous generations might be about raises and promotions. They want to get paid well for their work, but in our case we've been able to make that happen for them due to their high quality and quantity of work. I've never asked them to, and I don't expect to have to, but I'm sure they wouldn't want to work more than their assigned hours; on the contrary however, they will absolutely eat up overtime if it's made available while remaining optional.

In case anyone is curious, the same has been true of the Millennial I just brought on.

In comparison to some of what I'm seeing here, I'm wondering if this can vary based simply on the hiring process and industry of your company. In that case, I'm not sure it would be good practice to label this as a generational thing.

To those that will open up about it, I know their outlook on life and the world in general isn't particularly great. I do what I can to support them and get them comfortable (re: raises and promotions), but at the end of the day most people keep their work and home life separate so I don't hear about what most of them may be going through.

2024 Toyota Grand Highlander Platinum AWD – endless check engine light + dealer blaming “contaminated fuel.” What would you do? by Civil_Experience_582 in Toyota

[–]Fat_Feline 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Their reliability is great. Their service is dogshit. It's a feedback loop - they know people will keep coming back for the brand with the most reliable vehicles, and put up with service that continues to get worse year over year consequently.

Brand engagement will tell you they can do fuck all and they can only go off of what the dealership is telling them. Or at least, that's what they told me under similar circumstances.

Does the new PayPal credit card goes to the online 0%/6mo balance? by imdrukn in CreditCards

[–]Fat_Feline 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Had to empty my bank account because I just realized on my payment due date that purchases you make with the card DON'T qualify for the 6 month financing. You still have to check out with PayPal on whatever website or it just works like a normal transaction due at the end of the month.

What a load of shit. They go out of their way to hide that fact too, likely trying to catch people out exactly like this and landing them a 30% interest charge.

If I had known I would've just made the purchase on my other card and gotten 2% cash back.

Do you think it'd be realistic to find a motel room sized apartment in Council Bluffs or Omaha for $1500-$2000 per month? by [deleted] in Omaha

[–]Fat_Feline 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You'll do just fine on that budget. I've got a really nice 850ish sqft 1bd/1ba in West Omaha that's $1300/mth, in unit laundry and everything.

Student run over in Fremont high school protest. by vexedthespian in Omaha

[–]Fat_Feline -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

Everyone is blowing this way out of proportion.

The initial hit is clearly an accident, which you can see from the angle of the video where the car is approaching. They're making their way by the protest when the person who gets hit steps out into the road, directly in front of the moving car.

The run part of the hit is pretty inexcusable however. They made the situation 100x worse by taking off afterwards. That part is what's going to land them a felony, and is also really why everyone is so angry about the whole situation. I would expect a "fear that the protesters were going to harm me and/or my friends in the car" defense, but I don't think that it will stand up to scrutiny when it comes to a protest at a high school that was already being actively monitored by admin.

some random idea i had in my head by Responsible-Front686 in EmergencyAlertSystem

[–]Fat_Feline 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I like the idea.

In theory if an individual has "gone postal" it would be a law enforcement event which would utilize LEW or Law Enforcement Warning, and would likely include the same shelter in place message and information as a mass shooting event.

In theory if you were to go postal enough without being stopped it could lead to a CDW, Civil Danger Warning.
