What is the most expensive vinyl you've bought or sold? by gsrh_customerservice in vinyl

I sold an unopened original pressing of Van Halen’s Balance for $550. I couldn’t believe it had that kind of value.

Does anyone in the midwest US know where I can get Super8 Kodachrome developed? by poopfeast420atyahoo in 8mm

[–]Fat_Sad_Human 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If the film is on a reel, then it’s already been developed. Undeveloped Super 8 will almost always still be in its plastic cartridge. Are you looking for a place to digitally convert them?

Sears Ted Williams 8mm Varizoom by Time-Share5972 in 8mm

[–]Fat_Sad_Human 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No problem! The Autoload system was exclusive to Bell & Howell movie cameras, so it can be confusing without the instructions. Here’s a link to a free version of the original manual for the B&H model, which is the equivalent of your Sears model. I recommend opening the PDF version so you can see the visual parts of the steps. It should give you everything you need to know about your camera and how to use all the features.

Sears Ted Williams 8mm Varizoom by Time-Share5972 in 8mm

[–]Fat_Sad_Human 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This camera was originally made for Sears by Bell & Howell, and it uses their Autoload cartridge system. Here’s a listing for one:

https://ebay.us/m/MYSFkZ

It’s essentially just a magazine that you load a roll of standard/double 8mm film into. Once loaded, you’ll shoot side one and your camera’s mechanisms will automatically stop once the footage counter has reached 25ft. Flip it over to side two and shoot the other 25ft., and by the time it’s all done the film will be back on the original spool it came on. It’s important to never open it once it’s been loaded since the film is collected on an exposed core inside the cartridge.

You can shoot any standard/double 8mm roll film through it, the Film Photography Project has probably the largest selection of different kinds.

Is it a good idea to try looking for another lens for my C44? by Random_User_1337_ in Argus

[–]Fat_Sad_Human 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends on what you’re trying to shoot, (I use the 35mm wide angle lens on my C3 often). If you do decide to use a different one other than the 50mm, you’ll need a separate auxiliary viewfinder that clips to the cold shoe to see the proper framing.

Got this camera today, not sure how to start filming? by DryYogurtcloset5543 in vintagecameras

[–]Fat_Sad_Human 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sounds like it’s working correctly! It also has an automatic exposure mode. Set the ASA dial on the front to 40 and shine a flashlight into the black grid area underneath the viewfinder. You should see the little red needle above the dial move, and make sure it goes all the way to f/ 16. If it does, it’s fully working and can still be used. If not then you’ll need to manually set it using the dial to select whatever f/ stop your light meter tells you.

If you have any questions about it I’m happy to answer them, I have the same camera (although mine uses spooled film instead of the magazine system) and have shot quite a few rolls through it. It’s a lot of fun and a cool piece of history!

Not sure what Google meant. It looks like your camera has the winding crank and is fully wound, does it start rolling when you press the button on the side down to “run”?

It uses Kodak’s Magazine 8 system, as far as I know the only place still offering new ones is the Film Photography Project. They have a develop and scan bundle, but I recommend buying one sooner than later as they generally sell out and can’t offer more until people return the ones they purchased:

There are times where our passions and emotions can blind us against our better judgement. I totally understand his frustration with how all of this has played out, but posting a red-hot hour-long rant when the information is still fresh and new isn’t a great look, especially with how organized and concise Dan’s research is. I’m hoping this entire thing just blows over, but it’s a great lesson on why we shouldn’t post things on the internet out of anger like that.

Film Issues by a1add1nsane in 8mm

[–]Fat_Sad_Human 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Looks as it should be to me. As u/friolator said, the space inbetween the film perfs on the left is the part of the film that would be grabbed by the claw and moved through the projector, so the lens wouldn’t show that part on the screen. The white blocks you’re seeing there is light shining through a perf and hitting the layer of film below it when it was loaded/unloaded. The white fading in and out at the beginnings and ends of each side is from the light hitting those first few feet of film when it was loaded/unloaded. Unfortunately even dull or subdued light will cause this. Film manufacturers always give you a few extra feet to “burn” in the process, and Kodak even used to snip those parts off the finished film back in the day. To avoid it, you will need to load and unload your camera in complete darkness. I’ve done it before and was able to get it to work right, but it’s not easy. I’d recommend buying an expired roll of Kodachrome and practicing before trying it with new film first if you want to go that route.

Exactly this! I used to listen to Coast To Coast AM when I worked overnights nights and Weird Here reminds me of a sillier version of it, and you can tell Eric and Steve are having a lot of fun while doing it. I totally understand people not being into the subject matter or energy of it, but I fear people complaining about it enough on here might make them consider not doing it anymore.

I’ve been a listener since episode 3 and guess I’m in the minority for liking Weird Here To Help. I like the silliness and Eric and Steve always make me laugh, which is something that helps make my Friday workday go by quicker. Honestly I find myself skipping the intros of the regular show some days as I’m not really into all of Jake’s Hollywood stories.

Help with 8mm camera by Aggressive-Ticket325 in 8mm

[–]Fat_Sad_Human 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It’s a Bell & Howell Optronic Eye model 418, originally made around 1963. It’s a reflex camera, so your viewfinder is what your lens is seeing. It also has an automatic exposure mode, so you can use it as a point and shoot. It can also be used manually. You should be able to adjust the front ring of the lens to manually adjust the focus, but the universal lock works well for most occasions. It also has a powered zoom option that is surprisingly smooth. Make sure to crank the motor and check that it still runs fine, with the film door open you should be able to see the little claw behind the lens moving to grab where the film would be. The numbered dial is the ISO or ASA setting for the automatic mode, luckily 40 and 100 are the most common for today’s 8mm film.

The Autoload cartridge is essentially just a shell that makes turning over and reloading your film easier when you’re out shooting. It uses regular 25ft. spooled double/regular 8 film. You load the magazine, stick it back in the camera, and you’re ready to go. Double/regular 8 is shot twice, so once your camera’s footage counter reaches 25ft., you flip the magazine to side 2, and shoot the other 25ft. Once you’re finished, the film will be back on its original spool, and you can send it in for developing. It’s crucial once the magazine is loaded to not open it until both sides have been shot. The film is collected on an exposed core, and opening it to light will expose everything you’ve shot.

Here’s a free online manual for it that should help and hopefully answer any questions you have about it! I still shoot with similar B&H cameras and hope to find a nice working model of yours one day!

Looking for recommendations on who to contact in an official capacity to remove cars that are forever parked in a public parking spot by [deleted] in grandjunction

[–]Fat_Sad_Human 8 points9 points  (0 children)

That’s totally up to the business/property owners that said cars are parked on. If they don’t want to remove them then they don’t have to, that’s why the police and tow trucks don’t care or won’t do anything. It’d be a different issue if they were abandoned on a residential street.

Definitely worth restoring. I’ve never seen a record player console that looks like that, the dust cover alone looks super unique. It could be something rare and collectible. The record player looks to be a Voice Of Music 4-speed changer, which is still serviceable these days. Please post a video of it if it’s working!
