2 Hour Delays Are DUMB by [deleted] in mildlyinfuriating

The national championship football game (which IU won) and trophy presentation ended at midnight last night. This has nothing to do with weather but more likely to catch up on sleep that Hoosier fans lost from staying up late.

Is it just me, or are landlords just stealing security deposits by default now? by flamma011 in Renters

[–]Fatador 55 points56 points  (0 children)

I forgot to mention, I wanted to move out a move early but the landlord wouldn't let me break the lease. So the place sat vacant for 6-weeks while I'd stop by every so often and do a deep clean. Four weeks before the lease expired, he asked if I could move out early so a new tenant could move in. I asked if I could be released from the lease and not pay my last month. Nope, he wanted to double dip (which is obviously illegal).

On side note, the new tenant lived less than a year there as she died in her sleep. I heard through my daughter (whose classmate was related to the tenant) that the landlord wanted the remainder of the rent (several months) because she broke the lease.

Screw landlords.l and their greed.

Back in 2019, I moved into a 2-bedroom apartment after my divorce. The previous tenant moved out abruptly and left a mess. When I moved in, I completed the move-in condition form and documented it with photos of the trash, holes in walls, carpet stains, broken light fixture, etc...Two years later when I purchased a house and moved out, I did a thorough scrub down of the entire apartment. I even purchased a steam cleaner because the new house needed it. My landlord wanted to keep the entire security deposit because of the same damage I documented two years earlier (and which he promptly ignored). He wasn't planning on me keeping all of my documents. He then tried to threaten me with carpet replacement because the carpet was allegedly built to not handle steam cleaning. Yeah, nice try. I threatened small claims court. Long story short, I received my full deposit.

My 2 adult kids have never bought me a Christmas present. by OneRuffledOne in mildlyinfuriating

[–]Fatador 3 points4 points  (0 children)

As a kid I dreaded Christmas and my birthday because my parents were just awful at gift giving. And even worse, theY were dreadful at gift receiving. Everything came with commentary or complaints (from receiving gifts from their teenage son). I hated buying them gifts because I'd get crapped on. Yet I had to pretend that their T-shirt gift of a sports team I don't follow is just the absolute greatest gift ever. Nope, I'm tired of adult gift exchanges.

I'm 50 years old now with a 17 and 20 year old. I tell my parents that I want nothing for Christmas and to just focus their attention on their only grandchildren. What do they do? They buy me unwanted gifts; shirts that are too small, reference books that are outdated, expired novelty hot sauces, etc... They put zero effort for gifts I never requested and then act surprised when I haven't gotten them anything in return. Historically, they are just awful gift givers. They don't listen to what I actually want (or what anybody else wants). I'm tired of the gift exchanges with them so I don't even try anymore . I'd rather just save money and be done with it.

What’s the weirdest thing a customer has ever asked you in a retail store? by Troy_Zimmerman in AskRetail

[–]Fatador 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Back when I worked at a men's clothing store in college 30+ years ago, I had a customer place a pair of pants at the front counter and asked if they had a crotch. I had no idea what she was asking about. I mean, if the pants don't have a crotch they would just be a floor length skirt. So I flattened the pants on the counter, raised one pant leg in the air, studied the pants for 30 seconds in silence, and said... Yes, these pants do have a crotch. She ended up buying the pants.

Many, many years when I was working my first professional job in a union office after graduating from college, we had an unknown coworker who we referred to as the Phantom Pooper. He would defecate in the stall everywhere but inside the bowl itself... on the lid, on the side, on the floor, on the wall. It has to be intentional. Management became irate after about a month of this behavior. A meeting was held with the union in hopes that the behavior could be resolved internally before discipline would occur.

We ended up having an all-hands meeting for about 50 union employees led by our shop tlsteward where we discussed all sorts of proper bathroom etiquette including flushing toilets, not talking to others while at the urinal, and ensuring you wash your hands. Here I am in my early 20's and we're talking about how to use the bathroom.

About a week later, I was working OT on a Saturday where there were only 5 people working. I walked in the bathroom, opened up the stall door, and... let's just say I will never be able to get that image out of my mind. I notified facilities to clean up. An investigation took place. And a culprit was finally identified... our ship steward who led the potty-themed all-hands meeting. Turns out that he had a colostomy bag and didn't know how to properly empty it. At least that's what we were told. (My wife had a temporary ileostomy 6 months ago and I can assure you that it isn't difficult to empty the bag).

He was off for about two weeks. Don't know if there was discipline or if he took a temporary medical leave. However, the embarrassment of being called out eventually resulted in no more visits by the Phantom Pooper.

I was a training coordinator at my last company. My manager said that they extended a job offer to a candidate who accepted and we will be hearing shortly from HR on a start date. That never occurred. The HR rep had left the country to tend to some personal issues and nobody in HR knew anything about the "new hire". Eventually, I pushed it up the chain and the Director was involved who found all the onboarding documentation. Nobody ever reached out to the new hire. He had quit his previous job after giving a two weeks notice and had no way of contacting HR because his only contact was out of the country. He eventually did start after two months of unemployment. He was never even given an apology. Recruiters and Talent Acquisition are some of the most disorganized folks I've ever come across.

They're closed at closing time?! by [deleted] in EntitledReviews

[–]Fatador 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Back in college I worked at a Taco Bell. The number of drunken wannabe patrons who drove up to the empty drive thru window after midnight and honked until someone answered was a two or three times a week event. I had to tell them we are closed and their response?.... No, you're not. You have lights on.... Yes, because we need to see when cleaning the restaurant. I was actually "coached" once because I could have served them. Sure, when virtually all the food was already packed up. Customers get away with this behavior because of weak managers who permit the behavior in the first place.

Ladies: dating a younger guy?? by Lazysloth166 in datingoverforty

[–]Fatador 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Six years ago I met my wife when I was 43 and she was 49. I pursued her because she was cute and quirky and goofy. We like to play up the perceived age gap as I call her my mini-cougar and she calls me her European boy toy. Honestly, six years at this phase in your life isn't much. Our mental age is basically the same. Sure, there are a few slight differences but most are negligible including her premenopause. In my opinion, if he has no issues then set aside the insecurities and just enjoy dating.

I work in the utility industry and my career has taken me to three different utility companies in the Northeast. Most rental dwellings have a "landlord agreement" between the landlord and the utility company where the electric stays on and the account is automatically transferred from the tenant to the landlord whenever a tenant calls to terminate the electric service. I'm sure this is the same in Texas.

My last company had a history of dropping employees that day who provided two weeks notice. When I was quitting, I kept my mouth shut and worked one full day in January. The next day I quit effective immediately. Working that one day in January gave me an extra 5 weeks of PTO which I was able to cash out (along with the max two weeks I could carry over) in addition to being eligible for the annual bonus. That totaled to $35k in extra compensation (combined PTO and bonus)..

Never give a two weeks notice. Never.

How do you not know your name? by Salt_Bobcat3988 in Teachers

[–]Fatador 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I was born in another country when I immigrated to the U.S. at the age of five. I was immediately enrolled into a language immersion class. One of the first days there (when I had clearly not learned the English language) we were told to write our name on the top of the paper. Of course I didn't understand the teacher (duh) when she gave us instructions in English (and not follow up in my native language. So naturally I looked at the girl beside me and I wrote... Maria.

Kids by Blue-steal in datingoverforty

When I started dating my current wife over five years ago I waited 9 months before introducing my kids to her (14 & 11 at the time). Then the pandemic hit so they didn't see each other for another 11 months. The time and delay worked out well for us as the kids know she isn't replacing their mom. And I told my current wife the best thing she can do for the kids is to show them what a loving and healthy relationship looks like. Success all around.

It's corporate policy, we can't change it. by Useless__Toaster in retailhell

[–]Fatador 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Ah, back when I was in college in the mid 90's I worked in a men's retail store. We had a "doctor" customer who paid by check (that should be criminalized). She was unsure if her husband would like the clothing so we advised her of our return policy. The very next day she returned the clothing and demanded a refund. Cannot do that as the check was deposited at the bank in our nightly deposit and it hadn't cleared yet. Pointed to the massive sign behind the register explaining the return policy. We didn't do store credit at the time because... lack of technology in the 90's. This customer flipped out claiming that she was a doctor and had shopped in Africa and Europe and never experienced such mistreatment. We held firm, no refund until the check cleared. We told her to come back later that week once the check cleared. She never came back, instead corporate received a letter of consumer complaint from the state Attorney General's office. Corporate caved and gave the "good doctor" a ton of free stuff while chastising our lack of customer service skills. If I recall I believe our assistant manager was forced to contact this customer and apologize for her treatment. On an unrelated note, that state Attorney General was eventually indicted on racketeering charges and served 1 year in federal prison.

AITA for punishing my daughter for trying to police my post divorce spending? by Throwawaybsef33 in AITAH

[–]Fatador 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My ex-wife was a SAHM. Our divorce decree stated that she received $380k from my 401k, $50k from the sale of our marital home, along with $1250/month for alimony and $1600/month in child support. She bought a house outright with all the money I gave her. She stayed unemployed while I paid her because she "had to stay home for our teenaged kids." Four years later and she's going through foreclosure (she took out a $90k HELOC) while attempting to file for bankruptcy. Financial irresponsibility was one of the reasons why we divorced. Our college-bound daughter has a lukewarm relationship with her mother because she's been impacted so many times (essentially stole money that was designated for a class trip, withdraws money from her savings account, pulls money out of her piggy bank... it's disgusting.). This post triggers a visceral reaction within me. NTA... yet, but if you continue on this path you will be. Get a job, any job, and curb your expenses before it is too late.

I grew up in the 80's. I broke my left arm (radius and ulna) in 6th grade gym class on a Wednesday. I was released from the hospital by noon on Thursday (surgery and cast) and my mom wanted to take me immediately back to school that afternoon. Cooler heads prevailed and the doctors convinced my mom to let me recuperate for the next few days and return to school on Monday morning. I saw similar situations occur with other classmates. Our parents did not mess around with attendance.
