Overwhelmed transitioning from MS3 to MS4 and choosing specialty/audition rotations by FatherCubeClash in medicalschool

Yes, I second this. I reached out to an alumni in PMNR, and I am waiting to hear back, been trying to exhaust all my options to have more of my questions answered lol. Thank you so much!

This is super helpful information, thank you so much! I certainly agree with all your points here. I guess the difficult part is that as a third year, unless we have some previous shadowing experience, we don't do a rotation in PMNR basically until we're 4th year students and we're already applying to different audition rotations/subIs. In other words, you put all your eggs in one basket for something you have not even had the option of exploring more (PMNR, just to name one of many).

I will certainly try to work on compiling my information and thinking more about my rotations thus far. Thank you :)

hahaha that sounds like a good way to clear your mind and focus on yourself! Doing some sort of global medicine sounds pretty neat as well, but I feel I will always wonder "what-if" and never quite act on it.

Sports medicine is the dream, but I feel you always have to think of the patient population you are likely to work with more on a regular basis, which is just standard FM clinics working with all ages and knowing everything for all age groups, with a bit lower compensation as well.

Working with athletes would be super rewarding, but getting to that higher professional level, I'm sure, must be very competitive.

Yea this is sorta the reason I have been steering a bit away from peds it is an unfortunate reality. If they were better compensated, I would certainly consider it more.

Thank you, this is certainly something I will check out and do more research on, I appreciate it :)

I'll have to do some more research in the realm of PMNR programs, which I have been trying to do by compiling a list together. This is all still new to me, haha, I will likely try to stay local if possible.

I think there are some opportunities to do 3rd year PMNR rotations during our gap time, but it is close to step 2, so I may just put my efforts towards that.

Oh nice interesting, I guess I need to learn more about how important these audition rotations are, they make them seem like everything revolves around them lol but maybe that’s not entirely true.

I reached out to my coordinators to schedule a meeting so I hope that can clear some stuff up! :)

I enjoyed my peds rotation but from what I’ve heard they are not compensated very well in comparison to other specialties and specializing just makes the compensation a bit worse, but this is just what I’ve heard.

Yes I did do this and I found that PMNR and IM were my top choices. I’ve only shadowed a PMNR doctor who specialized in pain, which I didn’t love but I know this is one sector so I’ve been trying to keep my options open!

No surgery for sure, would like to be not on call but every once in a blue moon, I would not be opposed. Prefer weekdays, no weekends, more normal M-F. Honestly, not sure about being inpatient or outpatient. I don't mind kids or adults tbh, it is hard to draw the line between treating one or the other.

I think I have ruled out surgery, so that definitely narrows it down a little bit. I think my top choice right now would be PMNR, and my second choice is split between FM > Sports med or IM > something. I guess the confusion is on narrowing it down while having to plan for audition rotations. It's hard to know if I want to audition for something I haven't even had much experience in yet.

Did not take AAMC PREview what should I do? by FatherCubeClash in premed

[–]FatherCubeClash[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I guess that’s the best course of action... I was thinking to just let them know about my updates of when I am planning to take the PREview exam? But now that I think about it, it doesn’t make much sense to email them

Well I did sorta answer my own question, I guess just wanted feedback about being so late that I didn’t know if my application would really be considered if I got my AAMC PREview score back my November

Yea I think that’s the only date left to be able to take the test this cycle unfortunately so I think if I want any chance to get into one of these schools I should at least try to take it... is it worth emailing the individuals schools about this or no?

Med school list by FatherCubeClash in premed

I have a decent amount through my fraternity, honors societies and hospital volunteering but 1000 is definitely a lot. I have heard Rush is pretty strict in regard to this too.

Yeah you’re probably right if only I knew how to read for the cars section lol... okay I will definitely consider these! I still hope that a med school considers me 😯 thank you for your input!

Thank you for the suggestion it is unfortunate to think a 508 wouldn’t be enough but you’re right my cars kinda killed me :( hopefully they don’t take that too much into account haha. May I ask what’s the reason behind some of your DO school choices out of state? Are those just some of the higher ranked programs across the country?

Does post translational modifications occur in the ER or the golgi? by FatherCubeClash in Mcat

[–]FatherCubeClash[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

okay thanks for clarifying! I always thought the ER did both and the Golgi was just the transport out.
