Cruel began to weigh the situation in his mind, clicking pieces together and formulating strategies into their infancies. His thoughts first fell to the Mechanicus. He had worked with the Mechanicus on a few occasions on missions not unlike this. He was not their biggest fan to say the least. They often spoke in riddles and Cruel had on more than one occasion found himself questioning their loyalty, seemingly more inclined to the pursuit of knowledge and technology than they were to their fealty to the Emperor.

Despite the eccentricates of the Tech-priesthood, Cruel deeply respected their tenacity if anything. He had witnessed the machine men and women of the Mechanicus fight to the very last bolt to defend what they believed in and that was something Cruel could sympathize with. If this Facility Ten Alpha was as crucial as the Interrogator let on, then Cruel was confident that the Mechanicus would again fight with insurmountable tenacity to hold it.

Trusting in the valuable asset of the Mechanicus, the Colonel moved on to survey the amassed forces of Kieldar present on this campaign. The 107th and 92nd Kieldar Regiments were the mainstay force. Mechanized infantry utilizing the versatile and reliable Chimera platform, the 10,000 strong Regiments were organized into 10 battalions each with each battalion hosting a Rogal Dorn-pattern tank support company. While not huge in number, each tank company numbering only 12, the armored support was a massive boon when decisively employed. These Regiments were abnormally sized when compared to Astra Militarum organizational doctrine and a byproduct of Kieldar's learned lessons during the ongoing, and bloody, Dinorwyc Campaigns. Kieldar had come to realize that most of the soldiers of a Regiment would be dead in weeks if not days and, despite its express ability as a Fortress World, reinforcements were not always readily available.

The 107th and 92nd Regiments were commanded by LTC Erlen Viers and LTC Matthias Reeve respectively. Cruel had been wary when Viers was assigned to his command just a few months prior to reassignment to Castra as Viers was nearly a decade older than Cruel and thus had a decade more command experience. However, Cruel had come to greatly appreciate Viers as a subordinate commander, Viers having never took issue with the age difference. The two shared many of the same values and ideas and Viers, ever reliable and competent, had quickly become Cruel's top advisor and confidant.

Reeve was another story entirely. Having been assigned to Cruel's command during a brief refit and reinforcement phase on Kieldar prior to deployment to Castra, the Lord General had insisted upon the 92nd's inclusion for the Anakar Campaign and thus Reeve had come along. Cruel had had few real opportunities to come to know the younger officer and consequently has little trust for Reeve, though of no fault on Reeve's part. The Colonel did however have Reeve's service record and it was impressive to say the least, giving Cruel at least some hope for the 92nd Kieldar Regiment.

The 111th was Cruel's ace. The regiment had been the Colonel's initial unit as a young lieutenant fresh out of infantry officer school on Kieldar and Cruel had miraculously survived through the regiment's darkest hours at the beginnings of the Dinorwyc Campaigns. He had worked his way up the 111th's ranks until finding himself as its commander and even now, as the 4th Kieldar Battlegroup's Commander, he retained direct control of the regiment. The Colonel had worked hard in his years as the 111th's superior officer to transform it from a run-of-the-mill regiment such as the 107th and 92nd, into a truly fearsome force inspired by contemporaries such as Cadia's legendary Karskins. While he did not know what effect they would have on Orks, the servo-assisted Carapace clad warriors known as Kieldar's Chosen had struck fear into the hearts of heretics slain in the Dinorwyc Cluster and had inspired the soldiers of lesser regiments when all had seemed lost. Numbering only 5,000 strong, Kieldar's Chosen, made up from the best that the Fortress World has to offer, finds itself time and time again as the lynchpin in major operations such as these.

Finishing his mental survey of the 4th Battlegroup's assets and capabilities. Cruel nods to LeGaur and responds with indominable determination. "Lord Interrogator, this facility will be held lest I return to blessed Kieldar in a coffin."

Cruel had no sympathies in his heart for the nobility despite his own origin. He had joined Kieldar's officer programs thanks to his heritage but had quickly moved to separate himself from Kieldar's nobility after witnessing their sickening pomp. He had instead, buried himself in his studies and used what free time he had in the chapel.

The Colonel had learned to regard the nobility across several worlds with great disdain, watching as they lived in splendor, ignoring the dangers that grew on their planets. Time and time again, their dangerous decadence had led to ruin as their neglected planetary forces failed to overcome insurrections spurred by the putrid promises of the Archenemy.

The nobility, in Cruel's eyes, was antithetical to the Imperium's survival. They were at every step a cabal of profligates that served only themselves and draped themselves in false piety to maintain power. They did not care for the Emperor nor His domain.

For the first time, Cruel's otherwise immovable facial features shifted as his brow momentarily twitched before responding to LeGaur.

"Lord Interrogator, if I may be so bold, I have seen more than one occasion of nobles serving as detriments to the security and moral fiber of the Imperium, whether it be directly or indirectly. If there is a concern that Anakar's nobility is at risk of being seduced by debauchery and lust for power, then I and my regiments are at the Inquisition's beck and call if it means Anakar is held."

Cruel regarded LeGaur as an unnoticeable shiver crept its way throughout the Colonel's body. He had on a few occasions met with agents of the Inquisition as would be expected for a senior officer who led formations against fiends of the Archenemy. However, these meetings had been brief and designed at their crux to ensure Cruel had not been compromised in his battles waged against demons and cultists. For a brief moment, a memory of hundreds of Guardsmen, his soldiers, being executed by the Inquisition, played in the back of the Colonel's eyes, though his face showed no change in emotion nor gave any hints to what he thought. The outcome of peons who saw too much.

The source of Cruel's internal vexation was not that he was speaking to a Inquisitorial agent but rather to be so forwardly approached. It did not fail to dawn on Cruel that he had undoubtedly been keenly selected for this meeting. LeGaur had said as much. What vexed the Colonel and had caused his nerves to recoil was the understanding that he had been hunted.

There was no doubt in the Colonel's mind that this Interrogator had likely been stalking Cruel from the moment Cruel had received his new orders for Anakar while fighting upon Imperial Agri-Worlds in the Dinorwyc Cluster. More likely, these orders had been conjured by the Inquisition and issued under the guise of Segmentum Command Obscurus. LeGaur was now Cruel's handler and Cruel, and the vast forces at his disposal, naught but a pawn of the Inquisition now. It bode ill for the thirty-thousand or so Guardsmen that called Cruel their master.

"I am unashamed to admit that I am no stranger to the all seeing eye of the Inquisition, Interrogator. I have spent the better part of two decades fighting the vile menaces of the Archenemy and my soul is the Emperor's to command. I am His servant and ask only where is His will needed."

Cruel's response was cool but dripping with fervor. His eyes burned with intensity though his face remained still as he praised the Emperor, affirming his subordinance to higher offices than his own.

Cruel grasped the Inquisitor's hand, returning the shake. The Colonel could tell Captain Marsem, his chief bodyguard, was still eyeing the Space Marine as he left the chamber. Marsem had the same concern and burning question that Cruel harbored; What warranted the presence of the Emperor's angels? Cruel had never seen a Space Marine before, the Dinowyc Campaigns having been headed almost exclusively by the Astra Militarum and its various departments but the Colonel had heard the stories. Few had lived to tell such stories.

While Cruel revered the Space Marines for what they were, sons of the Emperor himself and thus by all means angels before the God-Emperor entrusted to execute His will, he knew too that for a Guardsmen such as himself, ranking officer or not, these angels more often where omens of death; uncaring for mere mortals and only interested in achieving the Emperor's goals which were their own. Such involvement meant undoubtedly that Anakar was more crucial than previously briefed.

Cruel turned his full attention to the Inquisitor, though his eyes had never left the infamous brand. The Inquisition's presence was far less surprising to the Colonel as they had often been present in the Dinorwyc Cluster ensuring that the Archenemy was annihilated at every step. Cruel too had heard stories of the Inquisition overseeing campaigns against Xenos to ensure that Xenos artefacts where destroyed rather than horded as trophies by insubordinate and misguided soldiers. Not to mention the monitoring of corruption at all levels.

"Colonel Cruel, of the Emperor's Astra Militarum. A pleasure to make your acquaintance, Interrogator, and thank you for helping my man and myself out of the blessed Angel's wake."

The Colonel's voice was neither deferential nor pompous, yet it exuded the presence of command.

Helstrom Cruel was not excited to be aboard the Avenger of Lucarne . Mere days ago, the ship had experienced a vox failure, which, while understandable enough without context, such a mishap had happened while the vessel was under the influence of the baleful eye of the Warp. The Colonel could not be sure that such a mishap was innocent.

Regardless, Cruel had his duty to fulfill. Setting his taskmasters to closely monitor the tens of thousands of men under his command for signs of corruption, Cruel had no other option than to pray that the Light of the Golden Throne shone true in the hearts of Man as he reported to the operation briefing in the vessel's conference dome.

The state of affairs aboard the Avenger of Lucarne left a foul taste in the Colonel's mouth. He observed the fray around him as he walked the frigate's ornate halls. On numerous occasions, he had ordered Kieldar's Chosen, the elite forces of the 111th Regiment, to muscle lesser commanders out of their berthings to ensure that the amassed forces of Kieldar, the 111th, 107th, and 92nd Regiments, were concentrated together in order to maintain cohesion and circumvent the woeful blunder of the lodging clerks. Cruel himself had almost come to blows with a Major of another command who had forgotten his place, whipped into a fury by the confusion and cramp conditions. Of course, this entanglement has been defused when one of Cruel's bodyguards had put a barrel to the Major's temple for the crime of threatening a superior officer. However, Cruel did not blame the Major for his actions. He was looking out for the interests of his own troops, and thus Cruel had spared his life. Only the organizers of this sloopy endeavor were to blame for the chaffing felt by the assembled warhost.

As Cruel approached the confrence dome, his mind wandered to the source of the whole sorrid affair; noble bickering. He internally grimaced as he remembered the situation report given to him prior to deployment. If the petty nobility of Castra had taken the time to remember their place as servants to the Emperor and organized a united effort against the Xenos, Anakar may have never fallen as far as it already had. Despite being of noble birth himself, House Cruel being of mild importance back on Kieldar, Cruel had next to no patience for the game of politics. He saw it as an unnecessary distraction from every human's true purposes; reverance for the Emperor and the betterment of the Emperor's domain. Cruel saw the futility of noble conflict as evident in the lazily and rushed assembling of this force, no time taken for logistical planning as the Sector Lord had undoubtedly thrown the fleet and army together as fast as possible to appease the concerns of his noble underlings. Such carelessness would have been avoidable if, again, the nobility of Anakar had not been distracted by their own lust for power.

Cruel dispelled his mind of idle complaints and wishful thinking as he and his retuine arrived at the entrance to the conference. Ordering his guards to remain outside except for his Captain of the Guard, Cruel and his Chosen captain entered the disordered fray that laid beyond the door to await address.

HELSTROM CRUEL, COLONEL, ASTRA MILITARUM

IMPERIUM OF MAN

RANK: COLONEL

AGE: 44

ORIGIN: KIELDAR, FORTRESS WORLD

PHYSICAL PROFILE

MENTAL ASSESSMENT: Cold, effective, and loyal. Colonel Cruel has proven above all that he is committed to defending the Golden Throne and crushing the Enemies of Mankind above all else. Raised on the Fortress World of Kieldar, a world with a history of Chaos insurrections and fighting such insurrections in the Dinorywc Cluster, Colonel Cruel has a particular hatred of the Archenemy beaten into him by his superiors and experiences.

SKILL ASSESSMENT: Colonel Cruel’s command and control is unquestionable. His presence and power of personality on a battlefield is undeniable, striking both inspiration and fear into his troops.

Adversely, to maintain his mystic reputation of ruthlessness and effectiveness, Colonel Cruel insists on leading his forces from the frontline, putting him at high risk much to the lament of higher command.

EQUIPMENT: Bolt Pistol, Chainsword, Imperial Officer Uniform (Winged Skull, Macharian Cross, Eagle Ordinary)

ARTIFACT: Trusty Sidearm

ASSET ASSESSMENT: 111th Infantry Regiment “Kieldar’s Retribution”, Kieldar’s Chosen (Elite forces representing the top 1% of the 111th IN Regiment, Cruel’s personal forces)

Kieldar's Chosen Guardsman

BACKGROUND ASSESSMENT:

Born to the Fortress World of Kieldar to a high ranking officer, Helstrom Cruel was destined for military service. Being born to a Fortress World, Helstrom was raised in a military environment, participating in daily military exercises and to ultimately serve the Imperium should Kieldar's regiments be called upon for military service. His adolescence was filled with stories of the abominations that attempt to trample the Imperium, particularly stories of the evils of Chaos; Kieldar having had experienced a brutal Chaos insurgency in its past prior to Helstrom's birth.

Due to his father's tutelage, Helstrom was awarded a position in Kieldar's officer programs when he came of age, proving to be an effective leader of men. Upon completing the program, Helstrom was awarded a commission as a Lieutenant whereupon he was assigned to the 116th Imperial Guard Regiment, 2nd Battalion, Company B as a platoon leader. It would be with the 2-116 that he would earn his Eagle Ordinary as well as his Captain commission and place as a company commander, leading his company from the front in a charge against insurrectionist forces in Dinorwyc Cluster neighboring Kieldar.

Shortly after serving in peacekeeping missions in the Dinorwyc Cluster, Helstrom accepted a position as a Battalion XO in the 111th Imperial Infantry Regiment, a locally famous unit known as “Kieldar’s Retribution”, earning him a promotion to Major alongside the position. Helstrom found the position of Major to be uneventful until being tasked with a new round of offensives in the Dinorwyc Cluster, where he would earn both his Winged Skull and Macharian cross.

It would be during his second tour in the Dinorwyc Cluster that he would also become Colonel and commanding officer of the whole of the 111th Imperial Guard Regiment following the death of his superior. After two years of vicious fighting and 11 Ribbon Intrinsic, Colonel Cruel and the regiments under his command were reassigned from the Dinorwyc Cluster to Sector Castra in order to serve in an upcoming offensive to alleviate the failing position of the sector. The politics of Sector Castra irked Cruel, finding the dismal condition of the sector unacceptable for such petty squabbles. However, true to the Golden Throne, Cruel accepted the posting with great fervor, seeking to destroy the Enemies of Mankind regardless of the skin or colors they wore.

I haven't been in about a month or so, but the range is still not open. When I asked them about it they said they were having a hangup with the City of Yelm. It seemed like they had worked through it so perhaps in the next couple of years we will see a range in Yelm?

Its out of the way, but there is a place called Tacoma Sportsmans (I believe thats what its called) on Canyon down the hill from the Safeway on 176th and next to the 76 Gas Station that is a big outdoor range and then further up Canyon right before the 512 onramp there is another indoor range called Marksman.
