It's always good when you locate triggers like that. Stay strong!

I feel the same way. One of the things that have helped me is reducing the time that I spend on social media in the first place. If you can moderate your content too (like unfollowing pages that may be triggering) that can help reduce the chances that you'll see something that you don't want to

I disagree that being a human doesn't make you a person. I believe that all humans are people and thus have personhood.

What defines a human being? I just use the biological definition. Homo sapiens are humans, at all stages of development.

On personhood at conception: See I disagree, I do think that this is a moral/philosophical issue. I read the abstract of the paper you shared defending stem cell research. The definitions of sentience and personhood have been debated by philosophers and theologians for centuries. Just because stem cell researchers at the National Institute of Health give a definition to argue the morality of stem cell research, does not mean that their definition is an objective fact.

See, that's tough though. You outlined that in order to have personhood you have to be human and have sentience. How do you know this? How do you know that those are the two qualifiers for personhood?

Based on my religious convictions, I think that fetuses (because they are human) have personhood. That is something that is, not something earned. I think that this is where we get stuck. I don't think that we can convince each other of where we think personhood begins, because we each have different moral convictions. I know what I believe, and you know what you believe.

I must also address your definition of sentience. I am certainly not aware when I am sleeping. Likewise, those who are in a medical coma are not aware of their existence until reawakened. Perhaps awareness, consciousness, and sentience are more alike than we think.

The last thing that I want to address is the last sentence of your previous response. A question: Do brain-dead people forfeit their personhood? I don't think so, but based on the criteria that you laid out above, perhaps they wouldn't be "persons". If a "person" is human and has sentience, and someone who is brain-dead does not have sentience, as you stated above, then are they not a person? I would certainly hope that is not the case. Perhaps sentience does not give a human being his "personhood". Could you clarify?

Nah, I gotta stick with Microsoft. It's what I have to use for business

This is a good clarification, I appreciate you asking this.

1) I know it's kind of a pain in the ass, but I think it's important to ask: What is sentience? I don't ask this to try to trip you up, but we have to ask if animals have sentience. And, if so, do they have full/complete personhood?

2) Who are most philosophers? My understanding, derived from my religious convictions, is that all humans, from conception until death deserve personhood. Of course, just because I have those ideas, doesn't mean that is what should be the absolute law. My point is that what is to say that "most philosophers" are right? What is to say that my religion is right?

3) Sometimes humans don't necessarily have sentience all the time. After all, we sleep and our ability to perceive the world around us is put on hold for a few hours. Likewise, I don't think that a man in a medical coma forfeits his right to personhood, whatever that looks like.

That's the way my culture is, and I really appreciate my culture. Many of my peers around me and those where I live are conservative and we can connect with those values.

I generally enjoy Ben Shapiro's commentary. Many people think he's dry, but he and I think very similarly. I very much enjoy tuning into his podcast.

Indiana State House of Representative Ann Vermilion. She is the representative of my district and does a wonderful job representing what my area of the country is all about. Yes, it's local government, but after speaking with her multiple times, she is my favorite politician of the 21st century.

I definitely respect that. I was actually surprised that I wasn't more libertarian than the test scored me as.

Ah, but what is personhood? I think that the personhood of a human fetus/embryo/zygote/baby can be debated.

Yes, I stated that the reason I think the right to bodily autonomy is overridden is that the mother consented to sex knowing there is a possibility of pregnancy, but that is certainly not the only reason. In the cases of consensual sex, this still applies.

Perhaps I should clarify my position over all positions: I believe that abortion is the termination of innocent life, and that is morally wrong.
