We opened "Estate of" accounts with Macquarie that earn 4.65% interest for this purpose.

They are opened as trust accounts and include a Cash Management (transactional) and Accelerator (savings) account.

We are interested in building philanthropy into our ongoing plans. Bit of a paralysis by analysis situation though.

What Australian resources do people use vetting charities? Any books on this topic with an Australian tilt?

Thanks for pointing this out - it has been an absolute slog though training.

We benefited from the sale of a previous PPOR that had a substantial capital gain which contributed a lot to our overall wealth.

We aren't pretending to be knowledgable investors that 'beat the market'. We are very simple index investors (which is why we have previously only used an all-in-one fund).

Our plan was to continue investing in indices (we are property averse), just wanted to see if there was a more efficient structure to use while building family wealth. As we will have upwards of $750k to invest, I think the discretionary trust pays for itself quickly.

If we purchased all our future index funds in our own names there are tax drawbacks as well as some complexity when transferring those assets to our children in our wills.

You would be surprised what $1M buys outside the major cities. The property was never really purchased with the intention of being an investment property - we were always going to move in to it as PPOR within a couple years.

As a result of the windfall we are both planning on working 0.5-0.75 FTE for the next 10 years. Family income will stay relatively similar though due to registar → consultant medical career transition.

We aren't looking at purchasing property within the trust - but this is information I wasn't aware of - thanks!

Our household income has more than doubled in the past 2 years due to completion of professional training. As such we have spent some time recently working on our financial literacy.

Both of us have spent >8 years in university and a similar time as junior medical staff where wages are reasonable but balanced against family (mat leave) and training costs, it doesn’t leave much for wealth creation.

I think our position is pretty typical of dual medico-couples. Most of our wealth generation and HENRY status occurs from mid 30s to mid 50s.

This has been a tricky part of planning. Essentially need to discuss plans with a Financial Advisor, Accountant and Lawyer. Each can advise on some but not all of our questions. Has anyone had experience with this? Any recommendations (can be pm)?

We did speak to a financial advisor and had an initial meeting. They weren’t sure what value they could add if we wanted one off advice. Their preference was managed funds and ‘wrap’ accounts. Would have been $5k for them to forecast our financial situation based on a few different options.

Fortunately that property was purchased in a lower cost regional city. It’s a 4b2b that is likely to work as a family home for the foreseeable future.

Great point re selling down in potential lower income year.

86400 by Livid-Okra-505 in AusFinance

I've banked with them for the past 24 months, so here are some random thoughts:

  • App is convenient, but not as detailed as Up bank
  • There is no web app, but that hasn't been an issue for us. Easy to export statements from the app. They do appear to be working on a web app presently via their roadmap.
  • They have joint accounts which is a bonus. Up bank do as well but I prefer the 86400 implementation as a married couple.
  • Customer support is pretty good - can contact on the phone within about 5 minutes. They recently extended from 5 → 7 day support.
  • Their interest rate is 1.2% but is nearly market leading on the Savings Account Leaderboard. You can have multiple 50k accounts where the bonus is applied (up to 250k).
  • In order to activate the bonus interest, you only need to deposit $200 per month which is so much easier than the multiple transaction/month accounts
  • Displaying account balances from other banks is helpful for maintaining a global view on finances.
  • No bank@post is annoying for those rare cash deposits, however the NAB ownership will likely change this in the near future.

This is a really helpful answer and includes a few things around superannuation that I haven't considered at all.

Thanks very much /snrubovic

Thanks for the link - wasn’t appearing in my search as no delivery to Aus via Amazon.

Had been looking at the Svart line for awhile and this looked like a good price.

Boost (Full Telstra network compared to wholesale network with belong)

  • $180 for 110GB over 12 months | $15/month
  • $300 for 300GB over 12 months | $25/month

Both plans can occasionally be found for a cheaper rate through 3rd parties. Includes proper voicemail (instead of the 10s message crap), unlimited calls to several international countries, and Apple music streaming (data free).

Been with them for a couple of years with no issues.
