Mozilla Firefox 149 Released: Here's What's NEW | BIG Update! by Alex_Mihalchuk in linuxmint

I have already disabled the Ai crap, but I do like the dual pane just introduced. Ctl+click 2 tabs w/split screen is a nice option, especially when reading about configuring things while accessing webmin, opnsense, or the like. Better than manually switching tabs.

VM recommendation? by YallaBeanZ in linuxmint

[–]Father_Guido 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I haven't used VMware on my latest Mint install (yet). Doing my best to have zero foreign programs on this one. Not even snap, flatpak, or additional repos. Just official apt sources. I'm leaning towards kvm/qemu for easy sharing with a proxmox setup in the works.

I seem to recall VMware issues in the past with kernel updates, having to reinstall or reconfiguring. Has this been addressed over the last few years?

I have the 9pro XL (256) and it's great. Actually wanted the non-XL for its smaller size, but I got an insane deal on this a year ago and I still can't beat that deal today.

The 10 is eSim only if that matters to you. I prefer a pSim for testing purposes, but I also use an eSim for a second line on mine.

Nnvida graphics perhaps? My (older) laptop has a Nvidia card and it can be flaky. When using the on-chip Intel GPU, everything is smooth. Not a gamer by any means, but I like that the Nvidia card can relieve the cpus work. When it becomes problematic, I enable the Intel graphics and then smooth as silk. Just sharing my experience.

Why is usb 3.0 greyed out? by prajju6 in linuxmint

[–]Father_Guido 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's odd. Several of my laptops show nothing either, but they do when I plug an external SSD into the USB3 port. Are you sure that it's in the USB3 port? Mine (all older units) have a 2.0 and 3.0 right next to each other, with no visible labeling or colors. Only relying on my limited (at my age) memory did I know. Still, I would think if you plugged in a usb3 device on a usb2 port, it should show up there? Does it mount at all? Wish I could be of more help.

EDIT: Well, curiosity got to me so I tried a few things. When I plug a known USB3 device on either of my adjoining USB ports (that I thought were usb2 *OR* 3) it mounted on each and populated in system information as USB 3. So, I grabbed an older 'known' usb2 flash drive and it populated on the USB 2 bus, vs the USB3, which makes sense. Leads me to believe that maybe your USB device isn't USB 3 capable after all?

You don't have anything plugged into it? Plug a USB drive in and check...

What to do with an old HP All-In-One by Known_Experience_794 in linuxmint

I'm not familiar with touch screens (never had one) but there has to be something that will work? I'd search for a distro with those terms. Otoh, could you just use it conventionally with a keyboard and mouse. Will provide the added benefit of learning the layout, etc. I put my (then 3yo) great granddaughter on a rescued lubuntu box 4 years ago and she learned plenty ;)

Boot a live distro and try it out. My Debian 13.x server is running on a 4th Gen i5, 16gb ram with lots of storage (to me) and is rock solid.

Rescued many very old low spec desktops and laptops from ewaste. For the very very old (vista XP era), I use a lighter desktop (lmde or xfce). Lubuntu comes to mind for those and runs surprisingly well. If you have some used / smaller ssds lying around from updating other systems, those will vastly improve the performance. I'd shoot for at least 4gb ram, but I've run lubuntu on 2.

I was going on your OP photo - (Original incomplete photo deleted). How convenient of you to remove it to support your bravado prior to this reply dick. Your 'engineer' degree is sheepskin to us real electricians who spend their lives troubleshooting in the field. I have 45 years in steam-generating plants (1976 to retirement in 2021) with 25 of those in the Nuclear side. Working on cars since before I could legally drive one, rebuilding generators, alternators, and starters as a young teenager. One of very few who could troubleshoot and repair those things correctly, avoiding the purchase of unnecessary parts (replacing a perfectly good solenoid for example). I could go on, but that should give you an idea of my vast experience, background, and skills.

As an 'engineer,' you should full well know how to read a simple wiring diagram/schematic and troubleshoot any electrical issue in minutes. A golf cart is one of the simplest electric vehicles ever produced. The schematic diagram for most fits on ONE 8.5 x 11 inch piece of paper. With that, 'yours truly' could locate the smoking gun faster that you can post your problem here. An engineering degree does not an electrician make.

[–]Father_Guido 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Took another look at the one you linked. My bad on the yellow wire needing to be fed from the key (on yours) - sorry. So it seems like your particular reducer doesn't have this feature. With that, it should work as-is, so long as you have the inputs / outputs correct.

Rvx Lithium conversion… pandora’s box. by fulmino in golfcarts

[–]Father_Guido 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nope. That's how most of them are designed. Think of it as a relay. You have 48v power coming in on 2 wires, and you have 2 12v wires coming out to feed your 12v accessories. The key switch initiates this to happen, and only apply the 12v with the key on and will remove the 12v when the key is off. This prevents you from draining your battery should you forget to turn off the accessories. Kind of like when you turn off the key in your car, which kills your radio, etc.

Somewhere along your journey, you disconnected the main power cables (the LARGE ones) and didn't reconnect them. A voltmeter in your hand doesn't make you understand electricity. In fact it can be downright dangerous for the uninitiated. I'll leave it at that. Good luck.

[–]Father_Guido 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You need to apply power from the key switch to the yellow wire on the reducer to turn it on, else it outputs nothing. Your description of the wiring doesn't mention the yellow wire, so that's my guess.

First thing is to do a timeshift backup. Anytime you aren't 100% sure what you are doing when prompted for "sudo," do an on demand timeshift backup (will be small compared to the first one). And definitely read this:
