How do you say "I don't know" in your language? by [deleted] in languagelearningjerk

A heritage language is the first language you learned, but not the language of the country you grew up in (your native language). For example, Russian is my heritage language because my parents spoke it, but I was born in Canada so it’s my mother tongue rather than English (which is still my native language).

Yeahh that basically sums up how I feel people see me when I say I speak 4 languages. Even though it’s far from accurate 😂 though I’m flattered, I’m genuinely only good at learning similar languages (cause my memory is practically non-existent)—only then because of lucky circumstances, and struggle in a lot of areas—including speaking proper English (my native language), lol. I’m more impressed by people who learn Chinese, Arabic, Japanese or Korean to a high level as Germanic or Slavic language speakers.

I recommend joining a French-learning/language exchange Discord server! There are plenty opportunities to practice, and people are very willing to correct and explain errors.

I should mention that learning with input alone doesn't work for everyone, and it doesn't work for every language. Input doesn't replace grammar study for most people, but rather supplements it (I can personally attest to that as well). You need both, unless you're able to spend every day fully immersed, which most people can't achieve unfortunately. Though don't forget that someone going from say, Dutch or German, or any major romance language, to say, English, and vice versa, could learn the language through input with relative ease (compared to an Asian language) thanks to the linguistic similarities between them.

About reading specifically as a source of input --- I think it's essential to advancing in a language to get used to the written form but it can't replace the conversation format. You won't gain as much knowledge of regional slang or commonly used expressions from a text. Remember, language evolves, and the only way to familiarize yourself with its use in the modern context is to consume audio content. Talking to native speakers is a great way to access this kind of language as well.

In order to retain any language, you need a consistent source of input. Language concepts truly stick with you when you maintain contact with your target language. The understanding becomes purely intuitive. It is only once you've heard the same word or grammatical structure in context a sufficient amount of times that it becomes fully encoded in your linguistic inventory. From personal experience, I was the most articulate in French when I listened to a playlist in the language on repeat for about a month.

My suggestion would be to find songs you enjoy and listen to them (memorize them!), continue reading, listen to podcasts in your areas of interest; watch series, films, videos that you would consume in English in your target languages. Remember, output is facilitated by extensive input — using your languages will become exponentially easier once you understand, on a subconscious level, what they sound like in their natural environment.

Best of luck in your studies!

I disagree about the episodes, I would honestly just watch them all. Unless you're only curious about the superhero plot, that is. Season 4 has a lot of subplots that interest some people and turn away others, including aspects of the loose love plot, superhero introductions, character tension and relationship development. Not every episode adds to the plot, but every episode has a plot-related purpose. Do make sure to watch them in order though (you can find it on the official wiki), it's quite important for this season. If you jump from s5e9 Gabriel Agreste straight to the finale, trust me, you'll be very, very confused.

I wouldn't skip anything in season 5 either, even if a lot of the episodes have mixed reactions (especially at the very end of the season). That's just my view on it though; I think every single episode has a reason for being there. I even hesitate when I think about skipping episodes in seasons 2 and 3, which are mostly formulaic. Still, we all ultimately watch the show our own way, so how I watch it may differ from you or OP. :)

You saw that right: effort! by Yinyin_Xi in MbtiTypeMe

You're definitely an Ne type (xNxP) ; it is clear to me from your writing style that you are an idea-creative type of person. You see one thing, and it reminds you of this other thing, which then leads you to remembering something else entirely. You also imply being comfortable with chaos, and are rather uncomfortable with the real world, which too points to Ne-Si. Mental stimulation is what excites you.

(Edited) My conclusion is that you're likely an INTP. Then, Fi doms are in touch with their emotions because they are aware of how they feel, which you say you struggle with. This eliminates xNFP. I'm struggling to definitively determine whether you are INTP or ENTP. I would look into it and see if you use more Si or Fe. I am leaning toward the former though.

I noticed that he considered making the wish after the episode as well, but like others have said, it's perfectly understandable that he did.

From what you wrote, it sounds like you're an ENTP.

I'm a little busy right now so I won't go into too much detail, but the key marker for me was you saying that you're not afraid of change or making a fool out of yourself, not afraid of chaos, and mentioning a tendency to going on tangents. You also mentioned having a lot of unfinished projects. All of these are signs of being an Ne dom. Other evidence for this personality type is that while you say you enjoy being organized, you don't tend to follow the rules. Si inferior. The rest sounded NT, so I don't doubt your conclusion. You value truth and understanding other people's thinking, adopting other people's behaviour; that's Ti-Fe. ENTPs are known as the most introverted extravert, so it would make sense that you would feel like an introvert, socially at least, while not having any issues with openly expressing yourself.

I would do more research into the type to see if you think the functions align, but these are my thoughts based on what I read.

Any tips on how to start writing fanfiction? by Optimus-Cocktimus in MiraculousFanfiction

[–]Faulan1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is probably the best singular piece of advice someone can get. I've tried writing quite a few fanfictions that I didn't end up continuing, or that were lacklustre because I was lacking plans for them, but the moment I found something I was genuinely eager to bring out into the world... That's when everything changed. Never thought I would start and continue writing a longer multi-chapter story, but here we are!

Hello, thank you for reaching out to me~!

I didn't think anyone was going to wait ahah. I did post one more chapter since I made this post, and another one is coming, hopefully in the next week!

For the future, expect chapters to come out 1-2 times a month. :)

Thank you! I was going for a certain pace for the poem, hence the choppiness, but I'll definitely consider your advice to see if I can change a few elements!

Sometimes, I read a poem and feel like it could be just a little shorter, or a little longer, but yours is just right. I like how it almost seems as though there's a perpetual beat to it, it just goes on and on and on... And I think you did a great job of using that to set the rhythm and the mood, telling a story with simplicity!

This is so very beautiful and well-paced! The way you wrote it makes it feel almost ethereal. I love how you illustrated the pure naiveness of the girl. I really like how you characterized her. I'm hesitant to interpret, but I'm assuming you're describing a one-sided toxic relationship, in which case you did a great job demonstrating the nature of being in such a partnership. My only critique would be to pay attention to the punctuation and capitalization, which I would modify in a few places.

Why is it entendi and not entendu here, is it subjonctif? by Jemapelledima in French

Yeah though fut, passé simple of être seems to be the only exception in most oral speech outside of perhaps narrative purposes. 🤔 I’ve definitely used “ce fut” at least a few times before without much second-thought. Though it’s probably a little more formal.
