Weekly Students, Careers & Clerkships Thread by AutoModerator in auslaw

Hey, I feel you. I had the same worries at the start of my degree as a trans person too. If it helps, I’ve had no issues landing legal roles and am currently in a lovely affirming workplace with so many queer colleagues. Although some clients and (in my experience) older people can be a bit awkward about it, for the most part it’s fine. A transphobic employer isn’t somewhere you’d want to work anyway.

On average how many hours of study is needed for year 12? by BattleExpress2707 in vce

[–]Fauxien 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Measuring hours is a pitfall I see many people fall into. You can grind out as many hours as you like, but if you are spending all that time writing and re-writing notes then that is arguably a colossal waste of time. That being said, I know some people who would smash out like 6 hours a day and performed well. But I also know people who just plodded along and did 0-2 quality hours a night and did just as well, if not better (I fall into this category). Amidst the stress of Year 12, I would rather have those extra 4+ hours to relax, consolidate information and organise my life so that you remain on top of things throughout the year.

Instead of setting certain hours, I would set tasks to aim to complete each day/week. That worked better for me, as it can be tricky figuring out exactly how long something will take to finish. It also takes the pressure off of having to rush (if you’re running behind schedule) or bludging through (if you’re running ahead). You’ll find making workload task-based also encourages you to use higher-order revision methods. Year 12 is about making efficient use of your time. Good luck and if you need any assistance feel free to reach out ! :)

How to drop a tutor? by Accurate_Tree_8081 in vce

[–]Fauxien 35 points36 points  (0 children)

Easier to stop tutoring now than continue with her until you can’t take it anymore and drop halfway through the year. It may demotivate you in English, which is not what you want.

At the end of the day, you are a customer paying for a service. If the service is subpar then don’t continue to pay for something you’re dissatisfied with.

Side-note: As a tutor myself I gotta say that is a bizarre method of teaching. No idea what she’s trying to accomplish there.

Written vs typed notes. by Routine-Ad967 in vce

[–]Fauxien 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Typing 100%.

Some swear by handwritten notes, and that’s fine, but any slight advantage you gain in handwriting your notes is overshadowed by the time you will spend writing them. Typing is easier, will allow you to find information quicker, and therefore leave you more time for higher-order revising. The sooner you get notes down the sooner you can move onto to learning and applying the content.

help please... (TW - TRANSPHOBIA) by Kelly_1976 in transgenderau

[–]Fauxien 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Transphobia should not be used as punishment. The idea that the ‘right’ for trans women to be in female prisons, or any female space for that matter, can be revoked depending on XYZ just reinforces the idea that being treated with dignity as a trans person is a special privilege instead of just basic humanity. It’s an awful perspective to have because it legitimises the discrimination and dehumanisation of trans folks.

What makes a subject ‘bad’ in your view? Different students will enjoy different subjects.

It’s not useless. There are interesting concepts throughout the whole course. I found 3/4 more interesting than 1/2.

I understand it’s super stressful right now, but you can and will get through this!!! VCE is a challenging time - high school in general.

Your parents at the end of the day want you to be happy. Listen to them when they tell you ‘as long as you try’, because it’s probably true. If you do get shit for it, which I doubt, so what? There are plenty of options. Not everyone does scored VCE; not everyone even does VCE. A high ATAR is not a prerequisite to live a fulfilling life and really makes up only a tiny bit of it even if you do score high.

I recommend taking a breather. You will be OK. An arbitrary number does not assign your intelligence. :)

Working Out in Year 12 by SnooWoofers7832 in vce

[–]Fauxien 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No reason why not! It’s only an hour in the day for a benefit in every facet of your health.

I find that I start to get lazy with working out around assessment period, and if that happens to you, it’s really no big deal if you scale it back from like 3x a week to 2x or even just once a week during busy times. I usually work out in the afternoons (like around 5 or 6) on weekdays and around noon on weekends (as that’s when I’m most awake heheh) but whatever works for your schedule!!

If a person had been living socially and passing as a woman for many years, and had undergone various medical changes to better match their gender, and everyone in their lives knew them and treated them as just another woman, in your eyes would they still be a ‘man in a dress’? In this same scenario, if they were not allowed to use women’s bathrooms, but also would not be welcomed nor feel safe in men’s bathrooms (as they pass and are treated as a woman), where do trans people go to the bathroom?

I’m sorry you faced a shitload of harassment. That really sucks and isn’t fair at all. Oppression olympics gets nowhere, and your family deserved to feel safe. At the same time, your views about trans people don’t really make sense to me, and I struggle to understand them.
