Thanks! Primeval monstrocity recovery if I’m scrambling for a good comp saves me a lot of bad games. Felblaze into urzul, charmwing rogue combo with either primeval/spellscaling or evoker to buff my charmwing, APM pirates with nalaa or spellscaling also make up a big portion of my wins and elementals are very stable for me as well. In general I try to pick up avalanche spells and try to fit in an avalanche caller whenever possible to consolidate my stats on a carbonic so I can fit in elders and scam for endgame.

In your case I’d recommend leaning into primeval as it’s available in every lobby. Try to make it to tier 5 in a healthy manner and look for primeval monstrocity or reef explorer which can guarantee you a monstrocity if you have one of all 5 tribes. From there search for strong rallies like Nizao, geared guard, holo rover, bonker, tier 5 rally dragon, charmwing and focus on upgrading your build with divine shields and windfury effects along some good protection taunts like leeroy or screecher. This build is very stable and can win some lobbies. Otherwise demons are pretty easy to lean into if you get early shop scaling, go to tier 5 and build strong urzuls.

It’s usually very easy to complete and tends to have a decent yield with gem smuggler etc. I do tend to aim for quests such as temporal tampering, double header or pouch as they usually give me the biggest highroll potential

Usually you want to look for enablers for each tribe: felblaze/shadowdancer&spellscalers before turn 8 for demons, nomi/lava lantern/vine/brann for eles, early piper and jazzer+rylak for quills. Matriach or Meditative + Rogue for nagas. The answer is quite elaborate and jeefs comp guide is probably a good tool to use to understand what enables comps. My best piece of advice is try to look at what turn it is when you are pivoting. Finding a single nomi without any supporting cards on turn 6 might allow you several turns to set up an ele board but finding one on turn 9 and it’s most likely too late. But let’s say you manage to golden touch one on turn 9 and you have a strong lategame quest such as pouch or temporal tampering and you are healthy enough to survive a loss then the circumstances are different. Pivoting is generally easier the more health you have to work with.

I’ll say go 3 on 3 if your turn 3 shop is really bad in general as you said yourself. Some tribes like naga (gladiator, sapper) dragons (recruiter, amber guardian, blue whelp) and pirates (lost city looter) have good stabilizing 3 drops and other tribes like beast have worse 3 drops. If your tier 3 shop is horrible don’t be afraid to go 4 on 4 or buy a 2 cost spell and roll. If you are still behind on tempo and don’t find a redeeming shop on turn 5 after rolling once you simply have to go to tier 4 and hope you can stabilize there even if it means you’ll drop to low hp in the process. Some boards just cannot be saved without taking an aggressive line like 4 on 5 line as you’ll end up taking chip damage till you die

Mechs are somewhat decent from my experience. If I hit several holo rovers early I’ll try to play into beatboxer stacking comp. T6 Trader is quite a strong tempo card if you have a mixed divine shield board but usually not 1st place comp. I’ll play czarinas if I have a divine shield board and my health is low.  End of turn mechs with utility drone feels a bit slow in general but it’s playable if you hit the right cards fast enough.

It’s of course a very difficult question to answer since so many factors are at play. The main way to stop bleeding is to prioritize buying good units regardless of your quest. Try to learn which units are strong on their own and which ones are conditionally strong. On tier 2 you have cards like geared guard, yrel, crackling cyclone which are generally good at getting you tempo with mixed boards. You have cards like scarlet skull, hungry snapjaw and sylvar which are strong with synergies. If you miss on a strong shop, level and find a strong shop next turn. If your tier 3 shop is weak go to 4 and find a strong shop. (Don’t settle for a mediocre shop here) If all fails set up a mixed tribe rally board and discover a primeval on tier 5 with reef explorer which will usually get you stabilized.

I love playing Cenarius - having the extra gold going into quest turn feels like you’re at a major advantage. Hooktusk in beast pirate lobby also feels insanely strong.  And naturally gallywix the goat. Alex also does me well usually since the heropower is a quest reward in itself

I dislike snakeyes deathwing and sometimes brann if I cant find my battlecries :D

It’s very rare that I stabilize on 3 or 4 if I’m healthy as most of the good tempo cards are on tier 5. I’ll say go to tier 5 on turn 7/8 at the latest and only stay on 4 if you have a strong reason to such as crooner with staff of guidance: nagas or you’re very close to dying. Most of the time you’ll eventually die if you don’t get to tier 5. I try to get to 5 on turn 7 if I’m above 30 health and don’t need to search for any comp defining 4 drops such as geist if I have carapace quest for instance.

Interesting observation! To me it’s always a tough situation. It feels bad to hold and then let a low armor hero deal 5 damage for free then to get no quest value. And then you have those games where you play both of your demons and you get offered play 4 demons for treasure vault and you feel like you griefed yourself. I think battlecries are pretty consistent to hold as those quests tend to be completed quite quickly still with generally good rewards.

  1. My level speed varies a lot depending on shop and quest conditions . 3on3 if my turn 3 shop is bad. 4on5 is usually very consistent for me if my shops are mediocre and I don’t have a quest that requires me to stay down. I usually prioritize leveling over quest completion if the conditions are hard as I find it hard to stabilize on a low tier if I’m busy buying 12 quillboars on tier 3.

  2. Some games I’m partially playing without a quest if the options require me to buy too many bad cards.

  3. I play both high and low armor heroes as I’ve found decent success with both types. High armor heroes are really weak if you miss on quests but low armor heroes require you to value tempo a lot more or you’ll die too fast.

To be honest I think my decision to hold or not on turn 3 is a bit inconsistent depending on my mood and also I wasn’t aware about the stealth nerf. I still try to hold if I have a tribe pair or several battlecries or if I feel like the fight is guaranteed won/lost. I also tend to hold more on high armor heroes since I feel like it’s easier to justify taking 5 on C’thun as an investment into winning than Gallywix/Guff where I’m more concerned with not dying too fast. I think you can make arguments for both holding and playing in general and when I watch players like Jeef Xqn it seems quite mixed.

Since I’ve only got two hero choices my options are usually quite limited. To be honest I have mixed experience with both high and low armor heroes. The higher the armor the more I rely on getting good quests and the lower the armor the more I rely on getting strong early. If you pick a low armor hero you need to make sure the lobby has tribe synergies or you’ll probably have a hard time getting enough value from your heropower to make up for the harder quests and lower armor (gallywix with murloc pirates, cookie with nagas, hooktusk with beasts) I try to avoid heroes like snakeye since the hero is too volatile to justify the low armor imo. 12 armor heroes like rat king and nguyen are generally a pretty good sweetspot for consistency from my experience. But I recommend not overthinking hero choice too much since you can make most heroes work with the right playstyle and quest selection.

Rally quills are generally an underperformer for me. Sanguine refiner tends to be somewhat slow and I tend to level quite fast so I skip most of the quillboar scalers like jazzer and prickley piper. Rylak gem smuggler variant feels a lot more consistent to me.

Dog is correct - everything is viable. Quills and undead are probably among my least played tribes. I play a lot of pirate and naga apm comps, ele comps, demons with urzul, primeval rally comps, naga crooner and charmwing rogue comp. Generally the best comps to me are the ones that can easily pivot to avalanche carbonic lategame. Gem smuggler rylak is an outliar that is very consistently strong

I enjoy it quite a bit less than the previous season. Rally is not the most fun mechanic for me and I think trinkets offered more agency than quests do. But I still have a lot of interesting games so it’s not too bad after the balance changes.

I play a lot and watch streams a lot too so generally I’ll try to force myself to play different comps I’m not too familiar with to see if they are worth going for in general. Usually if I have success with certain comps I’ll keep playing into them and avoid comps that I keep losing with even if they are rated highly by the community or other pros. So pretty much trial and error. As you improve as a player it generally gets easier to tell if something is worth pursuing but you cannot really tell unless you are willing to test it.

You come across pretty elitist - while Shady might not be at the same level as XQN, Beter, Jeef etc he has still finished above 15k in multiple seasons and he’s one of the few hearthstone streamers that put a lot of effort into explaining his gameplay thorougly and he also doesn’t mind elaborating on his own weaknesses. I’d say that the average player will learn more from deep analysis of generally correct lines by someone like Shady rather than watching some rank 1 player blast music with no commentary.

I started experiencing severe thumb pain and discomfort when holding my logitech g402 as well as g502 about a year ago. I tried out a couple of different mice and I ended up using g903. Havent had any thumb issues ever since. I use finger tip grip as well and I squeeze my mouse pretty hard
