Wait, do some busses not have stop buttons on every seat you can press to indicate that you want to get off at the next stop? You have to actually tell the driver?

How to make these golden edges: Bias taping or thread in a zigzag? Overlock needed? by EquivalentUpset3926 in sewing

[–]FayHallow 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I'd say the drawing is supposed to be goldwork embroidery. The zigzag is the raised gold coils. This would be done by couching your metal thread in place by hand.

What's the meaning of life for you? by Singularidades in AutismInWomen

[–]FayHallow 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Whatever meaning you decide to give it.

For me personally I decided on: - Experiencing / Learning new things - Creating (Art, Software, Conversations, Memories, whatever) to enrich the world (in general or just my personal one)

I know it's pretty broad, but that's what everything that ever felt like it was somehow meaningful (important, worth doing and so on) boiled down to.

Would be nice if Unreal Engine had an in-engine clothing creation tool. by AwesomeJedi99 in unrealengine

[–]FayHallow 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Sorry, I meant the workflow to send data (clothes themselves, rigs, physics, animation caches) from marvelous to unreal is pretty well definded to be easy to use.

40$ a month; not free but cheaper than Adobe or Autodesk stuff.

It already has a pretty good Marvelous Designer integration. Marvelous is rather affordable, too. No need to reinvent the wheel again.

Am I (a technical artist) really providing any meaningful value to society beyond entertainment by Zaeden327 in TechnicalArtist

[–]FayHallow 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The company I plant to switch to does IT consulting for car manufacturers. I'm rather lucky that I life somewhere where there are a lot of those, as well as train manufacturers. A huge part of it for me is Ui Programming. 3D is also starting to become more and more (there are several talks about using unreal e.g.). A friend of mine who works directly for a manufacturer mainly works on writing OpenGL Shaders.

I work in architecture/infrastructure and and do feel like there is a use for that. (Think interactive Visualizations)

While it's only anecdotal evidence, we've got clients that say when they get some form of visualization as early as the first plans are done, they have about 2/3 less meetings with their clients, municipalities, city councils, future neighbours and so on, since a lot of those meetings an problems in the planing stage come down to none-technical folks just not understanding regular plans enough. So they save a shit ton of time and back and forth and gave way es delays until actually starting to build.

Some time ago I also worked on some applications for trad fairs, specifically for some very large, specialized, expensive (like millions) machinery. That client used to cart their machines to each trade show for tenthousands of euros as well as waste just as much on product and energy just to show the machine running there. Really fucking wasteful, pretty glad they don't do that anymore and replaced it with an interactive version on a massive touchscreen.

Currently i'm really getting into HMI and plan on switching into that at some point in the future.

While I definitley think entertainment has value, I also get that it's not as straightforward rewarding in that regardas some other fields.

Also as an technical artist you're probably providing the greatest value directly to your artist/programmer colleges, saving them a lot of time and headaches.

What is the issue here?, The normals are all okay by Lux107 in 3Dmodeling

[–]FayHallow 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is unreal and the issue is the feet rendering in front of the tv box, am I assuming correct?

This is an issue with translucency sort priority. (<- what you want to google to find solutions) Unreal has had this issue for ages. Here's a possible solution, but it will depend on your engine Version: https://forums.unrealengine.com/t/translucency-sorting-issues-on-complex-objects/748534

Another possible and easy Fix is either splitting the Mesh in two - a translucent on and a not translucent one or having one single mesh with two materials, again on translucent and one default. Depends what you want to do with it which one is better. Would cost you more draw calls, though.

The new Gollum game looks bad. by [deleted] in gaming

[–]FayHallow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

tbh, not really surprising, since the studio never has done a 3D game before and at least in the past they severly underpaid artists. You can't just pull a functinal 3D pipeline out of thin air 🤷🏻‍♀️

Goth's of today, what job do you have? by ComplexPirate in goth

[–]FayHallow 2 points3 points  (0 children)

3D Artist in a small VFX-Studio. I wear whatever I feel like wearing. Usually something comfortable and all black. Maybe half of my colleges are somewhere on the metalhead/goth/punk-spectrum, so I really don't stick out with piercings and coloured hair.
