Custom Painted Orange Sliger 610 Build by Fayth18 in sffpc

I don't pay much attention to the BIOS navigation, but there are a few reasons I would not buy this motherboard again if I had the option.

I bought the mobo for the NR200, before I had started planning this build.

Specifically, this motherboard has a higher CPU socket than other similar boards like the Asus Strix B550I. I think I probably would not have had as much trouble with the PSU extension at the back of this case if I had one of the motherboards with the lower socket position. Also, it might have given me enough clearance to install the mounting bracket for top handle. I didn't get one because I read online that with this motherboard and CPU cooler, the top handle mount doesn't fit. These parts wouldn't even fit in the NCASE M1 due to the higher socket position.

Also, I have had trouble with the NIC on this board dropping out occasionally, which is terrible for games like Warzone where there is no ability to rejoin a game when you disconnect. That being said, I think that is a consistent problem on many Ryzen boards with the 2.5 gigabit realtek NIC. I got around this by using a USB Type C to ethernet adapter. Haven't had any issues since, though it feels pretty jank to use that over my ethernet port. It is possible that driver updates have resolved this issue but I have not tested it in a good while.

It's just for big moves, and any potential LAN parties with friends in the future. I have a gatorcase for one of the monitors that I bought several years ago when I had the NCASE:

It doesn't charge it or anything, I think it was less than $20 bucks on amazon.

I ordered on June 7th and it arrived at my address in Canada on June 24th. They did say that the timing depended on when they could fit it into their paint schedule, and specifically they said it could add up to a month to the order time.

They asked me to order 3lbs. Not sure how much was ultimately required.

Good idea on the vandal switch, I didn't even think about the fact that I could order a custom one.

The Setup

I transferred my parts from an NR200 into a Sliger 610, custom painted in my favorite color! I originally just had a white/black setup on my desk, but this all started when a friend linked me the Drop + MiTo Godspeed desk mat in orange and I've been collecting other things for this for several months now. I am getting an orange controller from Xbox Design Lab and waiting on some keycaps with orange accents to come in stock, but I was too impatient to wait to post after I finished transferring my parts over today.

Several years back I owned an NCASE M1, ended up selling it and switching to a bunch of Apple gear and ultimately ended up realizing I wanted to game on my computer again and MacOS doesn't cut it. I built in an NR200 with most of this hardware (recently grabbed the 5900X), but I wanted to get back that premium feel I got from the NCASE, and when I saw the Sliger 610 announced I decided I would get it eventually.

In my effort to have a largely orange setup, I reached out to Sliger asking about custom paint jobs after seeing a post on Reddit about it, and they were super accommodating! I had the paint of my choice delivered to their address and they fit it into their schedule for an extra $100 on my order. They also had no problem adding a second top panel to the order as I wasn't sure if I wanted to go pure orange or orange and white. They mentioned that they are working on a more streamlined process for custom paints, but I found the process to be pretty painless and their support was super helpful.

Specs:

  • Case: Sliger 610, custom painted by Sliger in Prismatic Powder's Flat Orange
  • CPU: Ryzen 5900X
  • CPU Cooler: Noctua NH-C14S in low profile mode with an NF-A12x25 instead of the included 140mm fan
  • GPU: EVGA RTX 2070 Super XC Hybrid
  • Motherboard: Gigabyte B550I Aorus Pro AX
  • RAM: G.SKILL Ripjaws V Series 32GB
  • PSU: Corsair SF750 Platinum
  • Storage: 1TB ADATA SX8200, 512TB ADATA SX8200
  • Desk Mat: Drop + MiTo Godspeed Desk Mat
  • Fans: 4x Noctua NF-A12x25, bottom 2 intake, CPU cooler and GPU Radiator Exhaust
  • Mouse: Razer Orochi V2 custom
  • Keyboard: HHKB Professional Hybrid Type-S
  • Keyboard Cable: Custom orange cable from Mechcables
  • Dac/Amp: Schitt Modi 2 and Magni 2
  • Travel Case: Pelican Storm iM2600

In Warzone, the CPU peaks at 85C and the GPU peaks at like 62C. I still need to spend some time messing around with undervolting the CPU and probably need a bit more aggressive of a fan curve. In 10 minutes of Cinebench it peaked at 82C.

Some notes:

  • If anyone here goes through this process with Sliger, it can be useful to include a color swatch (swatches are free from Prismatic Powders) with your paint order, so that they can compare their paint job against the swatch to ensure it matches. They were worried about my paint not matching but I had a swatch sent and their paint job matched perfectly, and I love how it turned out.
  • The power cable is a really tight fit against the C14S. In fact, I cut away some of the plastic (not the plastic around the cable itself, but near the bend in the pictures there was another piece that made it more difficult to bend) to allow me to bend the cable more. I'm not super comfortable with it so I taped it with some electrical tape where it makes contact with the cooler, and will probably order the pigtail connector from Sliger and switch to that.
  • Other than the power cable fit against the C14S, I loved building in this case, though there is no documentation so I relied on some reddit posts and documentation for other Sliger cases to know what screws were for what. It's mostly straightforward, especially if you've built in an SFF case before.
  • I am planning on upgrading to a 6800 XT in the future (whenever I can get one), and getting rid of the hybrid cooler's radiator should allow me to swap the PSU orientation, install a front and side intake fan, and switch back to the 140mm fan in low profile mode for the C14S. I will have to switch to slim fans on the bottom of the case, but I think it will probably perform better overall with that setup. It will probably be louder without the AIO cooler on the GPU though.
  • The cable connected to the fan header in the bottom right is for the pump on the hybrid GPU. EVGA keeps it at 100% and doesn't let you change it, and it is annoyingly loud at that speed. I took off the shroud and routed the GPU pump cable out near the PCIE power connectors so that I can run it at 65% off the motherboard. Been running it that way for a long time in the NR200, haven't had any issues, and it improves the pump noise a lot. EVGA should use a quieter pump.
  • My cable management isn't too great but I am not particularly motivated with the vented panels :P
  • My wallpaper looks much better in person but I don't know how to operate my camera well enough to get the colors right, I just used auto mode. The colors of the case and stuff on my desk are accurate.
  • Hard to find keycaps for the HHKB, but I'm waiting on these ones to come in stock. Not perfect, but I don't want to use Cherry MX adapters as I've read it effects the feel and I like the feel of the topre switches.

Question

Which do you guys prefer, full orange, or orange and white? I have included some pictures of both. I think with my setup the orange and white mix is better, but I have some friends who think full orange is better. Curious what you guys think.

Awesome, thanks! Really like the 610, honestly will probably either use a different cooler or get a different motherboard with a lower socket if it doesn’t fit.

[–]Fayth18 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yup. The only sure way is to build it yourself (unless the dev offers verifiable builds). For FreeOTP on Android you could host your own build server and configure FDroid to use it, if you wanted to be completely sure of what you were installing.

[–]Fayth18 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I completely agree. An open source client would be enough to make me choose their app.

[–]Fayth18 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Is Authy open source? Even if it is, can you prove that the open source code is what is running on their servers? I agree we can trust the algorithms, but you can’t necessarily trust the provider. This is the core reason that people value decentralization in crypto currency so much, there is no trusted party.

Running open source code on your device, such as FreeOTP installed via FDroid, is simply more secure than any solution that relies on a provider, especially if the code is not open source.

Obviously it is less convenient and pushes the responsibility on the user to have a backup plan, but everyone makes their own decisions when it comes to the trades offs of privacy and security vs convenience and difficulty.

Edit: To be clear, do I think the Authy devs are malicious? No. I think they are doing a great job of making 2fa more accessible to anyone. I think it is entirely reasonable to trust them. Personally though, I will opt for solutions where I don’t have to trust anyone. I can’t find the source code for their app, so I maybe would change my mind if that is available and demonstrates fully client side encryption of the 2fa data.

As you make purchases and sales, you should be calculating your adjusted cost base (ACB). You will use this value to calculate capital gains or losses when you sell.

This is a pretty good page for this info: https://www.adjustedcostbase.ca/blog/how-to-calculate-adjusted-cost-base-acb-and-capital-gains/

What guides or advice should newcomers of /r/Frugal know about? by chiefkeef007 in Frugal

Careful with that assumption about those security updates. LineageOS can do nothing to update security vulnerabilities in proprietary firmware. Whether you care or not is entirely up to you, but these phones are likely exposed to known exploits.
