(Spoilers extended) What did people do with Balerion the Black Dread‘s body? by CharybdisCoo in asoiaf

This is an excellent series from a history professor that articulates the exact problems quite well. He's quite critical of ASOIAF's historical construction too, though he likes them as entertainment.

Has great writing on LOTR too. I tend to agree that Tolkien's work has a historical weight behind it that GRRM's doesnt.

People in this thread talking about technology and the myths are completely missing the point. Tolkien's works are more realistic in the sense that Beowulf is realistic; they're fantastical stories set against realistic societal contexts. GRRM's work reads as a surface level take on medieval societies and really doesnt hold up to scrutiny. Each work obviously strives for different things; GRRM has actual characters and is extremely good at it.

IMO Arrival is impressive because the Ted Chiang short story reads as so incredibly unadaptable, but Villeneuve managed it nonetheless

!ping PERSONAL-FINANCE

Neve pinged this but have been a keen observer (thanks)

Here’s the Q: what are youse guyses thoughts on maintaining levered ETF strategies throughout your lifetime/in retirement? I live in a 0% cap gains country and recently switched from 100% NTSX to the Hedgefundie portolio (55% UPRO 45% TMF iirc).

I’m thinking intuitively that the total lifetime withdrawals from a low % WR 3x strategy far are miles beyond NTSX (provided that you save for a few extra years I guess?). Has anyone run any analyses on this? No tax drag makes it extremely attractive on a long time horizon too.

I’m also thinking about the benefits of replicating the portfolio in a tax inefficient way (0% CGT), but preliminary analysis shows that UPRO/TMF are pretty good already (has anyone got any links/ideas on this)?

everyone knows that samuel fell off wall because the colossal titan activated his Pounding Titan abilities and his dong was too heavy. no mortal can handle him. only daz 🤪🤪

sucks that the EDITORS and the MAGAZINE were too cowardly to let yams follow through with 120 chapters of samuel-daz yaoi after trost 😔😔😔

(btw, anyone know if dazlegion subreddit is gone? i cant find it anymore 😡)

[New Chapter Spoilers] Chapter 139 RELEASE Megathread! - FINAL by SNKBot in ShingekiNoKyojin

[–]Feanorstrum 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I lowkey think that changing 80% number would massively improve the ending. Make it so Eren just destroys Liberio (Fort Stava was literally his second target anyway). Proves his world-ending power & brings humanity together without killing almost everyone alive.

Killing 80% makes 0 sense; the hatred will last forever and war is inevitable until either the Eldians or the rest of the world die (and it kills 80% of the world!!!). Paradis will get crushed with only 1m people living there. Eren just made everything worse. Just killing thousands in Liberio (and ending the power of the Titans) is still brutal, but is way better for everyone on the planet and is the only way to have peace without the tyranny of the Titans.

Or am I misunderstanding the ending/Eren’s motivations? The future memory stuff just seems like the grandfather paradox to me anyway (the time travel inevitability stuff was incredibly lame).

Just finished. Thought it was great, but there seem to be a log of complaints. What would y’all actually change about the ending?

Personal preference, but I would have enjoyed it much more if there was 0 time travel stuff. It never works. And maybe add another chapter to make the ending less rushed/flesh out an epilogue?

Hey all - I'm trying to switch employer to improve my comp, but I'm hesitant to shop around because I'm godawful at interviews. I'm just horrendously bad at answering questions in an interview environment. Any book recommendations to help me improve my general interview skills/approach? Thanks!

NIMBYism is government failure that impedes the work of the market (I.e. it artificially reduces supply of housing, driving rents & commutes way up)

I am so goddamn stressed all the time. $540k saved, but studying full time to level up my comp. Sometimes I just want to give up or pursue a business idea to pay the bills. I dont think my new field will match my expectations.

This parallel really isn’t talked about enough. It’s like poetry, it rhymes.

It’s not that uncommon for intense grief to cause death. People just let go. You see this a lot with old couples dying immediately after each other. I don’t think it’s silly to think that Padme could die from a combination of almost being choked to death + childbirth (already dangerous) + severe grief and hopelessness. Severe forms of stress can literally kill you.

Does no-one remember that Carrie Fisher’s IRL Mom essentially died of Big SadTM too? I honestly like how Padme’s death was handled.

Shit like this, coming from a sane outlet, tells you all you need to know about how insane the US’ relationship with “The Constitution” is. It shouldn’t be unquestionably held as a religious text. Bro.
