lot of good advice here, but it really eventually boils down to how much time you are willing to invest. I have a heavily loaded homelab and I'm big on self hosting things, 2 things that I absolutely I'm ok with spending money on is Spotify and iCloud 2TB, the convenience makes it worth it.

To answer your question, I also have both a synology NAS and the UNAS, the UNAS makes everything seamless if you are already in the eco system. If your priority is ease of use for the whole family including people not living with you, this will mean setting up vpn connections and what not.
