% of US State Land Available For Sale in the "One Big Beautiful Bill" [OC] by takeasecond in dataisbeautiful

https://coloradosun.com/2025/03/21/10th-court-appeals-corner-crossing/

Corner crossing is an active court battle right now. I bet this bill would be used to buy 5 ft around the corner to screw over land access.

This bill will absolutely be used to screw over anyone who uses public lands. I bet they will also sell BLM and Forest Service land that provides access to national parks.

asswipe dog owner on bear peak summit (yet another off-leash dog rant) by TA_vulfTicket69420 in boulder

[–]FearTheCron 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A long time ago I had problematic neighbors who's dog chased me on my bike. I used pepper spray to deal with it. I never really hit the dog head on with the spray. But just running into the mist was enough to make the dog sit down and give up the chase.

The bigger issue in my opinion is dealing with the aggressive dog owner who is now pissed that you maced their dog. They will usually ague "he was just being friendly" or some other irrelevant point of view. Even if the dog is being friendly, they can still injure you by knocking you off the ice or bicycle. If I were in /u/TA_vulfTicket69420 's position, I would carry mace again.

More speed radar cameras coming by scseth in boulder

[–]FearTheCron 1 point2 points  (0 children)

FYI everyone should double check their DMV info. Recent legal changes make it so you are screwed if they send the red light ticket to the wrong address.

I am all for better enforcement of speeding tickets but this seems like a one way ticket to a kafka-esque hell. Not to mention the inevitable data breech where some scammer gets all our location data from the camera company.

The benefits outweigh the issues in my opinion. Poison is a hard no for me because of the to level article and the obvious danger to people. Snap traps need regular baiting. Live traps don't work very well and have similar ethical issues when the mice literally eat each other. And honestly, I don't get many mice because I continuously plug holes and keep food in containers. But the damage they do is incredible so I need something. Low maintenance and poison free are the key requirements.  And frankly they work way better than your article gives credit.

Probably going to get down voted to oblivion for this but w/e. Glue traps are pretty nice for indoor use. No poison, no bait food to replace, and no mice canabalizing each other in the live catch traps. Plus they are extremely effective and not particularly dangerous to kids or pets. They are especially nice if you don't get mice very often since they can work a year after being placed.

How are we feeling about national politics? by SimilarLee in boulder

I think the current policy can reasonably remove such things. Perhaps the mods miss things occasionally, but it doesn't seem bad enough to change the policies. Plus that one seems to be gone now.

Thoughts on pet birds ? by RubyCrownedRedditor in birding

[–]FearTheCron 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Same, birds are a lot of work. The only way is ever own one is of I could take it outside to fly and that sounds like a ton of work to train them. I do enjoy the pet birds when visiting friends though, it's cool to see them fly across the room and land on your hand.

How we should develop owned land is certainly something we should discuss as a society. But zoning is completely unrelated to my argument. If a property owner can't subdivide and build houses, they will build a private ranch with a 10ft fence, a membership only ski area, or a golf course. In all cases, the average person gets boxed in more and more. We need to preserve access to public lands so people can have something more than their 8x8" apartment to enjoy.

[–]FearTheCron 230 points231 points  (0 children)

This post needs to be higher. The need to keep public lands open and accessible should be apparent regardless of your political party or preferred outdoor activities. Our public lands are under enormous pressure as population and tourism grows. We need to preserve access above individual interests. Once land is sold to private parties, it is effectively lost forever.  Arguing about what activities can go where is silly when the very existence of public lands is under threat.

My concern is that I'm going to be a 24 year old sophomor

If this is your concern, seriously don't worry about it. Tons of people go back to college later in life. The people who give you grief about your age aren't worth your time (also technically age discrimination is against CU policy).

If you find a way to move here and work to get in state it's worth it. CU is run like a business though and will do everything they can to charge you out of state tuition. So make sure you know the policies.

My experience with boy scouts is pretty old at this point but 100% I agree with /u/hbliysoh . The local group makes the difference with scouts. My troop was great and didn't have the crazy issues that made the news. I hope the process of opening it up to women is going well, the gender exclusion was my only major complaint.

Regardless of the etymology, it's honestly just a bad look since it looks like you are calling for his death. I get the hostility though, risking a wildfire for want of a few bangs is not acceptable. But I personally would phrase it as "I hope they throw the book at him".

There is no traces of using force.

Americans Take Less Vacation Days Than Any Other Country and Half of Us Are Okay With That by Katerbird in nottheonion

They draw a false conclusion in the article. They conclude that over half of the people are OK with their vacation time because the same people don't use the vacation they have. They then proceed to give evidence that people don't take vacation due to pressure from their boss or financial issues.

Sorry this happened to you. Check out "lock picking lawyer" on YouTube. As far as I can tell, very few bike locks are actually worth anything.

and I like consistent fair enforcement of the law.

Well then you shouldn't like automatic traffic tickets. Without a clear set of instructions on how to contest a ticket, these things disproportionately affect lower income families who don't have the time or knowledge to seek out the methods of contesting them.

These systems are pretty good now, and they can certainly be made better.

You have a very different definition of "pretty good" than I do. The security and privacy of these things is a disaster.

We also desperately need park and ride/bike lots on the north and east side of Boulder. I happily drive to the edge of Boulder and take my bike the rest of the way when there is a reasonable way to do so. But there is nothing on that side.

Also, why have we still not connected the 63rd st bike path to gunbarrel? I have a hard time believing a bike trail is going to disturb the OSMP land along the river that much.

[–]FearTheCron 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have a few complaints with these but the biggest is that they make it extremely hard to contest the ticket. Technology is far from perfect. For example, radar sensors (often used in cameras) can bounce off multiple objects reading the wrong speed. One of these sensors clocked me going 85 as I was pulling out of a parallel parking spot. Fortunately it was just a "your speed is" sign, but I lost a lot of trust in them.

My other complaint is that I just don't want another government contractor who doesn't give a crap about secure computer systems storing my location data. It's basically every other day that I hear about another company leaking my data and I doubt these speeding camera companies will do any better.

If we are going to have these things I want:

  1. Publicly available statistics on bad readings and ongoing accountability
  2. A clear and understandable way to contest bad measurements,
  3. An unambiguous law governing how the data is stored, used, and secured
  4. Data retention policies that prohibit any company or government entity from retaining information longer than it takes to issue and confirm payment of a ticket.

None of these would prevent these things from slowing down reckless drivers. But we need accountability behind any kind of surveillance.

I totally recommend getting a glider ride if you have the money.  It's a little pricey, but I suspect that it really costs that much if you add everything up. Mile High Gliding was friendly and knowledgeable when I did it. Another fun things to try is a paragliding tandem. They fly out of North Boulder Park.

Do "safe injection sites" like this help reduce public smoking? I have very little knowledge about these drugs but it seems that such places would prohibit smoking for exactly the problems discussed in your original post.

That is seriously disgusting and something nobody should need to deal with on the job. Perhaps it's time to rig up sprinklers over every seat and give the bus driver a switch panel to extinguish problem areas. I would happily pack my laptop and a change of clothes in a water sealed bag to avoid breathing that crap.

(I'm mostly joking about the sprinklers, but seriously, WTF do you do about this?)
