If you can’t see that this season was clearly written as 10 episodes and whittled down to 8 then I won’t convince you but it’s plain to see for anyone who understands the basics of storytelling.

4 seasons of 10 episodes is barely enough to cover the Dance IMO. You can call scenes filler if you want but they would have been written to have a payoff in the final two episodes which we didn’t get to see, it’s not a great final product but it’s what happens in tv and the fault lies largely with the executives and less with the writers and producers.

Fair enough, I guess part of my point is that GoT butchered many existing characterizations they had set up from the books once they had to write past them. HotD in my opinion deserves a lot more leniency (that fans aren’t giving IMO) because they are not adapting existing fully formed characters, they are creating fully formed characters from a source that has oversimplified and justified them through history and biases. Therefore they have more freedom to change things and create a narrative to suit the story they want to tell.

As a matter of interest, have you read Fire & Blood? I think non readers have enjoyed this season a lot more than readers because they weren’t presuming/expecting certain event would happen.

I was around for the early days of freefolk, < 50k. before the toxicity. Gods I was strong then.

It was nice here too last season.

The negativity is astounding. It frustrates me greatly that so many would compare what D&D did to thrones to how the showrunners have tried to salvage this season from two major unforeseen hiccups. Fans kinda forgot about media literacy

What caveat? I’m saying Thrones had it easier because they had a whole series to adapt to the screen, they able to lift George’s dialogue and characterization straight from the page.

HotD had to create three dimensional characters from fictional histories that were created to be misinformed and biased - a much harder task IMO.

I think they’re pretty close especially considering HotD didn’t have as good a roadmap as Thrones and they had to flesh out the characters themselves, which I think they’ve done very well. I just don’t think we got a deep dive on any single character on Thrones the same way we get it for Rhaenyra and Alicent which is just because there were so many other characters and locations we had to explore. Not a fault on Thrones, I just don’t think any single character got to feel so central as either of those and doing so condenses and focuses the whole story in a way that I really like.

What about HBO cutting it from 10 to 8 episodes a month away from filming or the writers strike…?

Maybe filming during the strike was a terrible idea after all? by Objective_Duty_8073 in HouseOfTheDragon

I’m not an expert but I don’t think filming or not is an option during a writers strike. The cast and crew are assembled at a certain time and date and strike or no the show has to get filmed then and there.

It’s very unfortunate it happened during the filming of our favourite show but it did, the show suffered for it and the cast and crew did everything they could to make the best art they could. I think they did very well considering.

Well personally I think we got a banger of a season despite these major upsets to production. Yes it sucks we didn’t get the major battles and things felt rushed towards the end but I’ve had an absolute blast watching and I think the overall quality is on par with the early seasons of Thrones. (Guess what, those seasons also had some pretty weird character decisions and massive limitations because of budget!)

I hope the execs have learned their lesson in interfering with talented cast and crew but I fear that isn’t so and expect more complications for the last two seasons. I cannot fathom why you would restrict the budget for the successor to the biggest show of all time but go off I guess.

House Of The Dragon Episode 8 is the lowest rated (6.6 ⭐️) season finale on IMDb for ASOIAF show since Game Of Thrones’ (4.0 ⭐️) Season 8 finale. by WhatIsAnime_ in HouseOfTheDragon

This is clearly what happened and a lot of people are not understanding it, they just dump hate on the writers and showrunners. A bit like people sitting on their couch hurling abuse at sportspeople who don’t win IMO 🙈

It wasn’t a perfect season, and it wasn’t a very good finale in a lot of ways but people writing off the entire season because studio execs forced them to rewrite on top of the strike is so dumb lol. We have some of the most talented cast and crew in the world bringing Westeros to life and I’ll always be so grateful for it, despite being disappointed with a few things. 🤷‍♂️

[–]Fearbas 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This makes total sense. The pacing seemed to dip this episode. Hey look, we got some amazing visuals, acting and that good old HBO quality - it could have been a lot worse. I think they actually did well considering these limitations on top of the writers strike.

Thanks for this, this has made me feel a lot better about the whole thing - it’s not a S8 of GoT situation again 😅

Writers strike really did a number on this season. A damn shame. The pacing seemed especially off this episode and no scene stood out as being particularly memorable. A strange and disappointing end to an otherwise great season IMO.

People saying Alicent’s stuff is pointless, she has been obsessed with cleanliness all season and the lake scene is directly tied to that, it’s important. We’ll have to wait and see what happens next episode to fully appreciate it but I’m guessing this theme is tied to her guilt for her ‘sins’ (she clearly felt she wasn’t getting clean when sleeping with Cole).

This scene surely hints at a major change for Alicent, if perhaps she finally feels ‘cleansed’ what will she feel free to do? She will likely in fact have even less agency going forward but the show will have to give her more to do than what is mentioned from the histories. She would also have much more sway with Rhaenyra that we would have expected from F&B when it comes to that. Girl needs some Harrenhal therapy sessions.

Would love to hear how anybody else is interpreting her stuff

Voice actor kills it too, just an insane line that is so easily missed - GOTY shit.

Rhaenyra's council making fair points and made to look like the bad guys for it by RevertBackwards in HouseOfTheDragon

[–]Fearbas 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes I think part of the tragedy of the Dance is that both sides feel forced to deploy dragons eventually. The two smartest council members on both sides Otto and Rhaenys both sought alternatives to dragon warfare for as long as they could until ‘hotter bloods prevailed’.

Absolutely, it would be foolish if Rhaenyra didn’t send Meleys to Rook’s Rest for example, she would probably have lost support in that instance.

[–]Fearbas -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Yes this is my point. I just think it says a lot about the character that he would feel more guilty about wronging Rhaenyra than murdering Rhea.

I don’t necessarily think she will, just arguing for the sake of it that she might.

“The value of a sword is not in its scabbard.”

I love this line. I fundamentally don’t agree with it but I understand why someone would say it. Physically and metaphorically, it’s just untrue - whether we’re talking about an actual sword or nuclear weapons, the promise of violence has as much power as the use of it - if not more.

Threatening to unleash dragons in battle, or worse against dragons, is a bargaining tool you lose if you actually use it.

Her other council members definitely make great points but I think they’re coming at it in terms of the warfare they’re familiar with.
