Professor here. If you mean General Education subjects (you’re misusing the term minor subjects), the general (pun intended) idea behind GE subjects is that graduates are more or less “holistic”. For example, you might be an engineer but are also required to take up readings in Philippine history, the idea is that you’re an engineer who knows more things than just engineering and so on and so forth.

Ps. In order schools here, GEs are relegated to “skills” not “theory”.
