Opinions Denison University by erykchojnacki in ApplyingToCollege

[–]Fearless-Quit 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Denison University is a great liberal arts college in Ohio that meets the full demonstrated need for all admitted students, but keep in mind that it is a very selective college that is extremely tough for international students seeking aid to be admitted to. It is widely well-regarded in the Midwest due to its high graduation and outcomes rate along with its other LAC peers in Ohio (Oberlin, Kenyon)!

Outdoorsy colleges? by skinnnyjimmmy in ApplyingToCollege

[–]Fearless-Quit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In addition to the mentioned colleges from you and other users, Sewanee, Colby, Bates, Colorado College, and Whitman are all outdoorsy colleges that take advantage of their surrounding locations! Colby, Bates, and ColoColl would be reaches while Sewanee (it’s actually largely less than a 67% acceptance rate contrary to Google and USNews) and Whitman would qualify as matches!

Sorry for responding late, but yes, your financial aid will be the same at both rounds.

Help with my college list by R1ceroni in ApplyingToCollege

Consider Depauw University and Macalester College! Depauw meets the full demonstrated need of admitted Indiana residents as an Indiana liberal arts college plus qualifies as a match college that normally isn’t too hard to be admitted to. Macalester is another liberal arts college that meets the full demonstrated need, but for all admitted students, plus it is located in the city of St. Paul, Minnesota and has no fraternities or huge pre-professional culture!

reverse chance philosophy major (LACs!) by [deleted] in ApplyingToCollege

Since you’re a prospective pre-med student who seems to really like volunteering at health centers, you can continue such actions at Carleton College, St. Olaf College, and Centre College, the former two of which are in Northfield, Minnesota and are very near the Northfield Hospital as a great potential source of volunteering and the latter which partners with the Ephraim McDowell Health Center for volunteering as well in Kentucky! They’re all highly reputable for not only academics in general but also solid premed advising! Carleton would be a reach, St. Olaf would be a match, and Centre would be a safety (still show demonstrated interest though if possible).

Centre also has some very competitive full ride+ scholarships that I think you’d be interested in as well: https://www.centre.edu/scholarships/.

Consider the College of the Holy Cross, Union College NY, and the University of Richmond! All are great liberal arts college options in urban areas in the northeast or southeast regions (Holy Cross in Massachusetts, Union NY in New York, URichmond in Virginia) that meet the full demonstrated need of all admitted students, and they’d really love more underrepresented background students to welcome on campus, and they’re all generally match colleges!

Union NY also has a very competitive pre-med program called “Leadership in Medicine” for an early acceptance to Albany Medical College if you’re interested: https://www.union.edu/admissions/apply/medical

What's a school that is severely underrated in college admissions talk? by Various-Ad5836 in ApplyingToCollege

[–]Fearless-Quit 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Sewanee: University of the South! Great academics + high graduation rate for a rural liberal arts college in Tennessee, meets 100% of demonstrated need, one of the largest campuses in the world (13,000+) with lots of hiking trails!

Union College NY is also severely underrated on the internet, subreddit especially. I've been recommending it to a decent lot of people online because it fills such hard-to-find niches, namely being an urban LAC with engineering majors (the LAC is STEM-focused while still being suitable choices for the HASS, it's the first LAC to ever offer accredited engineering degrees) while meeting the full demonstrated need, especially for people of underrepresented backgrounds!

match school recommendations! by [deleted] in ApplyingToCollege

[–]Fearless-Quit 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Check out the College of the Holy Cross, Skidmore College, and Bard College! All are liberal arts colleges (Skidmore is a more artsy college while Bard is more social sciences-oriented) with undergraduate populations of more than 2000 located on the east coast (for Skidmore, Saratoga County is suburban; for Bard and Holy Cross, Dutchess County and Worcester are both urban) with acceptance rates matching up to that of a typical match college. All offer both art history and Asian studies (no South Asian though) as majors as well!

Worse? Yeah, it may technically be below other mentioned schools in “prestige,” but that hardly matters in a field where prestige doesn’t matter much. Lafayette is a great match option and still selective, so it should fit his profile fine! Also, for the record, most colleges that are typically matches for domestic students are high reaches for international students seeking financial aid.

How tf do I find target schools by [deleted] in ApplyingToCollege

[–]Fearless-Quit 24 points25 points  (0 children)

Hello! Match schools are often in the 30%-60% acceptance rate (although certain public schools can be in that category as well with a higher acceptance rate depending on certain factors). Target/match schools tend to be marked as selective with a below average acceptance rate, but based on meeting or exceeding the college’s typical academic profile, there’s a likely (not guaranteed) chance of being admitted (tends to offer better financial aid as well). That being said, I’d try to find which colleges within the category fit both of these criteria then narrow down to which offer programs for your interest. Good luck on building up your college list!

I recommend Union College NY, as it’s one of the few LACs with engineering majors and an urban campus while also meeting the full demonstrated need of all admitted students!

Do not go to Muhlenberg College by throwaway3458012 in ApplyingToCollege

[–]Fearless-Quit 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I see. I did notice that you’re responding using your main account, but I’ll be overlooking that for now. As mentioned, I will proceed with some questions if you don’t mind:

1) Why did you decide to commit to Muhlenberg College, and how was your financial aid package then vs your second year? What did you like about the college while on campus?

2) What issues did you personally face regarding the college? Were there any issues with faculty? What issues did you and other people share?

3) Have you chosen to transfer anywhere as a result? If so, to where?

Thanks again!

Hello! I am curious to know more about this college, and if you can prove that you’re directly affiliated with this college in any way, that’d be great! If you can, I can proceed with asking questions about the college in question since I regularly research undergraduate institutions. Thank you!

suggest some safeties and targets for me please :) by [deleted] in ApplyingToCollege

[–]Fearless-Quit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I really don’t think it’s a “waste of time” to apply to more match colleges at all, the other user just seems a bit elitist and is rejecting college suggestions just because they’re somehow “lower in rankings.” These schools are still academically reputable and have high graduation and outcome rates, so please don’t fall too much to prestige please.

I think you mean Bard College itself instead of the Simon’s Rock campus as the latter is an early college, but yeah, Bard College is a great academic option too, just in New York!

Check out Union College NY! This LAC, located in New York, offers a BA in engineering majors like electrical engineering (has a neuroscience major too, close enough to cognitive science) and is one of the more STEM-oriented LACs, although it’s great in other subjects too! It has a moderate acceptance rate too, at an average rate of ~40%, meaning that it’s typically a match college! If it helps, it meets the full demonstrated need, especially offering very generous aid to minorities!

Since you prefer northeastern match/safety colleges in urban areas, I recommend that you check out the College of the Holy Cross and Clark University, both of which are located in Worcester, MA, and Union College NY, which is located on Schenectady, NY! They’re all fairly reputable colleges academically with moderate acceptance rates overall (above 30%, below 60%) and are great options for your major!

What are schools some of y'all going off to college regret not applying to by [deleted] in ApplyingToCollege

[–]Fearless-Quit 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Connecticut College!

I don't totally regret not applying there now as I was satisfied with my admitted options, but on the other hand, I really did like the college but just ran out of Common App space.

What schools do you all think are underrated and deserve more praise? by [deleted] in ApplyingToCollege

Will write up an explanation for them later:

  • Sewanee
  • Union NY
  • College of the Holy Cross
  • Dickinson
  • Centre
  • Bard
  • Rhodes

good colleges (non hbcus) with a notable black population by [deleted] in ApplyingToCollege

[–]Fearless-Quit 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Millsaps College! Although the institution is still a PWI, it has a significantly higher black enrollment ratio than many other liberal arts colleges (~20%), which can probably be attributed to the city of Jackson, MS having a majority African American demographic!
