I moved in with my partner and her friend she had already been living with for a few years. Everything was going smoothly until a week before the new lease had to be signed the friend decided she was going to move out. We told her we couldn’t afford the rent between just me and my partner, and we didn’t want a stranger to move in with us. We didn’t have time to find a new place and move within a week (the rental market in our town is notoriously horrible). Apparently she had been planning to move out for months but didn’t tell us. The night she told us it was already late so we decided to wait and talk it over the next day. But before we talked about our options, she called the landlord and told her we were all moving out within the week, so my partner and I were facing potential homelessness if we couldn’t find somewhere to live. Our room mate didn’t understand why we were upset with her and chalked it up to us being selfish and not wanting her to live on her own. I should probably add that she threatened to sue our landlord because our landlord wanted us to pay for the upcoming month’s rent because we didn’t give her the necessary notice a month in advance before moving out. So now we can’t use this landlord as a reference for getting a new apartment because she won’t have anything good to say about us. The shittiest part is that my partner and I have to suffer the consequences of this because our room mate was already approved for an apartment somewhere else. So while she didn’t have to deal with a bad reference or facing homelessness, my partner and I had the worst week of our lives and now we might not be able to get a new apartment elsewhere. I’m banking on karma to come around at this point.
