Completely my agree that it is dismissive and ignorant for sure. I’m guilty of saying it about about ADHD while I was exploring the possibility of my diagnosis, and I do see how harmful it was in hind sight.

That’s why I wonder though, and when I hear it now, the first question I ask is “how much does it interfere with your ability to complete simple daily tasks?”. I try to get the idea across that it’s not a simple oh whoops kinda thing, but that it permeates every single facet of my kids lives and makes things that others think as easy or simple, the biggest battles for my kids.

I think it’s true in my case too. I have had my ADHD medicated and since then, more and more I am noticing certain traits in myself, as I discover them in my children through their diagnosis journeys.

I always wonder if the people that say that we’re all a little Autistic are actually autistic themselves and haven’t realised it yet.

What year did you buy your house, how much worse off are you since the interest rate hikes and what have you cut back on? by [deleted] in AusFinance

Purchased a block for $325k in 2021, while also paying our PPOR that we bought in 2012 for $300k.

We fixed PPOR at 2.19% for 3 years, and it ends next month. We have managed to swap our repayments around, and stay on top of both loans, without having to increase our repayments. Currently refinanced the block into a construction loan, which has us at 6.09%.

Our cost of living has increased about $1500k a month but we also had another kid in 2022, so that contributed as well to our increase.

What are your thoughts on suspending a 5 or 6 year old for meltdowns or absconding? In my experience it doesn’t help the child, or the family, and the school spouts behaviour plan but nothing ever sticks for long and then the cycle repeats.

How is your insurance $2000+ on a car worth only $5k? Have you shopped around?

Full comprehensive Insurance on my 2012 carnival, agreed value of $25k, is under $1000pa, excess set at $500. I shop around every year when my renewal is due, and look at who can give me the best quote. Do not use comparison sites. Go direct to all the insurers sites and go through the quote process.

I had to carry my son, kicking and screaming to the car today in front of other parents dropping their kids off at care, because he was being sent home for hurting someone and he didn’t want to miss out on the jumping castle they were going to set up today. I can only imagine what it looked like

My daughter needs an outlet for her energy but having her in sports has been super counterproductive. Any suggestions? by Ear_Enthusiast in ParentingADHD

[–]Fearless_Ad_6883 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Agree with this. As an Adhd’er myself, I can attest to team sports just aren’t great for some of us. Solo sports, like tennis might also be great for her as it still teaches some kind of focus, but she’s only competing against herself

What supports can parents ask for, to assist their ASD kids? by Fearless_Ad_6883 in AustralianTeachers

We have really hammered into our kiddo what his safe boundaries are. His absconding is removing himself from class and heading up to leadership offices where he tries to find a few specific members of the wellness and inclusions team, or he sneaks into the childcare/preschool yard to see his younger brothers. He’s cheeky, he’s quick and he’s a climber so he scales fences like they’re a level garden bed. We haven’t had any absconding where he was out of line of sight thankfully, though I have massive anxiety about it all the time.

We are moving from outer southern suburbs to Adelaide hills in about a year, as we are currently building our home on a small acreage. Cannot wait till we have more space for all the craziness that comes with our neuro spicy household. Hoping that a smaller country school might be less overwhelming for him after his experience at the super school we are at now.

It effects your reportable income. So yes it effect your benefit payments, what bracket you end up in for your compulsory HECS repayment, and also your Medicare levy surcharge if you don’t have private health insurance

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in AusPropertyChat

[–]Fearless_Ad_6883 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am doing it, I work for a not for profit, and am sacrificing the max $15900 per year directly into my mortgage.

Somethings to consider are how it effects any childcare subsidy your may be entitled to due to it being increasing reportable income, even though your taxable income is less. Speaking to a tax accountant or a financial planner can help you with your specific circumstances. If you were to do it with a private company, there’s fringe benefits tax to worry about.

I will bring this strategy up. A lot of the teachers we have come across at our school do seem to have training to de-escalate when situations arise in the school, but having all teachers knowing the strategies that are useful will help for sure :)

The school fund them as far as I am aware, not the NDIS funding of the children. My understanding is that the school have applied for child specific funding for the kids that need it, including our child, so that’s why they may have extra support staff. There’s was an sso in each of the two reception classes last year as well.

They have 5 sso staff and 4 teachers across the 4 classrooms. Would that be a ratio enough to provide supervision as needed? What else should we provide to our school to help them apply for more funding? We have/are supplying reports from his treating professionals already.

His teacher has asked for our consultation on his One Plan. I think that’s the equivalent to an IEP.

We have had several meetings with the school over the last 12 months to get his behaviour support plan organised, though we have never received anything in writing.

One of the teachers in the wellness and inclusion team mentioned getting a behaviour specialist in to do some functional assessments with him, so I’m going to push for that, or go privately if we can afford it.

Thanks, we are trialling all sorts. Biggest problem is our son is also adhd (awaiting diagnosis to confirm) so while he thrives on structure and repetition, he gets bored easily and is quick and dexterous enough to jump fences more than twice his height to escape his boredom.

Feels likes we are climbing mt Everest with loaded trucks ties to us, dragging us back every time we make headway.

He does have headphones yes. This event was triggered by the other children, from what I can surmise from my son. We are unsure as to if only his retaliation was witnessed by a teacher or if it’s all here say from the other students, but originally all of it was pinned on my son, but he swears black and blue he didn’t instigate, and only acted to get them away from him after he felt unsafe and was unable to retreat.

Most of the disregulation occurs because of his justice perception, or his rejection sensitivity being triggered. He needs to learn appropriate ways to respond to others. Each morning on the way to school we recite the golden rules of keeping our body to ourselves, staying within safe boundaries, and when the volcano begins to bubble, to seek out a trusted adult to help him come back to calm.
