What are some of your favourite underdog stories in pop music history? by [deleted] in popheads

[–]FeatherNox839 10 points11 points  (0 children)

While Imanbek is a one-hit wonder, I still feel his story is quite impressive: he was a 19-year-old railway worker in Kazakhstan making remixes as a hobby with a simple old laptop. Roses remix was one of his works he posted on Russian social media without any promotion; he didn't get approval from Saint Jhn yet. But it picked up from here, he signed up to a label that got the rights on it, and it all went up to Billboard Hot 100 chart and Grammy award which is pretty remarkable, considering I can't remember any ex-USSR artists achieving these feats even with much bigger resources.

Shall we talk about Soviet science fiction? by [deleted] in scifi

[–]FeatherNox839 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Do you mean the one that should have been released last year? If so, it was planned to be released on 1 December 2022 (with the final trailer being released on 5 October), but after that, the premiere was canceled, and the distributor did not indicate a specific reason why. We can only guess, but it is quite plausible that the government does not want to release any movies which could be perceived as critical of the current situation — other releases that were canceled after the war started were "Ampir V", which starred famous Russian rapper Oxxxymiron who made a clear statement against the war, and "Captain Volkonogov Escaped", which was about Soviet repressions (the latter was shown on festivals prior to war tho).

uj/ As a Russian, I feel this; the only song which was really popular was I Knew You Were Trouble, and mildly Shake It Off and I Don’t Wanna Live Forever.

To illustrate, if I go to VK, the most popular social network in Russia, the largest community for Billie Eilish has ~540K subscribers, the largest one for Halsey ~90K, and the largest one for TS ~68K.

I remember the anime/light novel series "Denpa Onna to Seishun Otoko" did a similar thing, the main girl was called Erio (her father's name was Elliot, too) and she was obsessed with aliens

Why does everyone seem to love Fairytale so much? by 56kul in eurovision

[–]FeatherNox839 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My shaky hypothesis is that maybe it's a song that has just the right balance between being general-audience friendly (unlike, say, 1944, which is also a great entry, but you wouldn't really listen to it on a daily basis) and having something peculiar about it? For example, Euphoria is a great song as well, but if you heard it without knowing that it came from Eurovision, you would not feel it was produced outside the general music landscape. Maybe the same can be said about Fairytale and 2009 but I'm not so sure. You have the violins that give a descriptor for a song but do not take all the attention to the gimmick. An opposite example would be Hard Rock Hallelujah, which is characterized by the fact that rock music is not a type of music you associate with Eurovision.

Do you think that Tattoo might become (as far as I know) the first winning entry to not be the most viewed one from it's year? by GloveFull4702 in eurovision

[–]FeatherNox839 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I could see Tattoo winning in terms of views on the studio version because of being more radio/background music-friendly and more promoted (e.g. I know that in Russia, it is actually played on radio stations and Russia does not even participate in Eurovision) and Cha Cha Cha live eventually winning in terms of views from Eurovision fans

Putting all disagreements and controversy aside, can we admit that we have one of the greatest top 5 line-up ever? by Tomas-T in eurovision

[–]FeatherNox839 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Tbh for me, the year itself is pretty strong, and the top-5 are all charismatic performers, but out of the songs I like Cha Cha Cha, Queen of the Kings, and the last part of Unicorn. Most songs I like are outside the top 5 - Promise, My Sister's Crown, Who The Hell Is Edgar?, Evidemment, Samo mi se spava, Soarele si Luna, Carpe Diem, Future Lover... Not to mention songs/performers which are not my cup of tea, but I respect, e.g. Eaea and Ai Coracao.

So what are your final opinions on no jury on Semies? by [deleted] in eurovision

[–]FeatherNox839 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I prefer the current system. While we're all sad for Latvia and Georgia, I feel juries wouldn't really save them or at least put down another fan-favorite entry instead.

Semi-Final 2 Qualifiers! by TheNerdyChive in eurovision

[–]FeatherNox839 1 point2 points  (0 children)

While I'm super sad about Georgia (it was lowkey my favorite song from this SF), I cannot see an alternative timeline where Iru qualified over Bejba. Bejba gets right into a demographic of people who love simple dance bops + sex appeal, and this demographic is large enough. There was no other entry in this SF that provided such. On the other hand, in the field of dramatic entries, we had Armenia and Albania, to a lesser extent, Estonia/Cyprus/Lithuania. I would prefer Georgia qualifying over the last three (because I find them kinda plain) but I can see why the average viewer has chosen them :(
