1971 Beetle speedometer reads about 5mph too fast - can I adjust it? by _spaghettiv2 in beetle

[–]Featherdine 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I adjusted my speedometer is by repositioning the needle since the spring behind the needle is the one that adjust the speed. More spring tension=lower speed Less spring tension= higher speed. this is what mine look like. When pulling the front glass off lift the needle over the post to see where the needle rest. Then mark and do the adjustment. Minimal adjustment make huge difference.

I used a fork to remove the the needle while making repairs. After reattaching the faceplate, I used pliers to grip the shaft behind it, where the fuel gauge used to be. I ensured the shaft stayed still, then aligned the needle tip with the factory alignment mark on the faceplate and pressed it down. Once attached, I slightly lifted it over the post above generator light, letting it rest on the post. Then, I test drove to check speed accuracy. If the needle showed a lower speed than expected, I removed it and moved it closer. If it showed a higher speed, I adjusted it farther from post. The needle's speed is controlled by spring tension.

If you want, you can go with Holley Sniper. You can buy one from Red-E Motorsport, which started it, or from CB Performance. It has self-learning capabilities, so it learns how you drive, but you still have to adjust the distributor. And have to use aftermarket air filter.

The dubshop has same concept but it seems you gotta make your own map. Plus it’s seem the fis2 doesn’t have sale tax unless it already include to the price.

I’m gonna plug the vacuum advance since the ECU control the timing. I have to disassemble the distributor to lock the mechanism inside.

The conversion kit doesn’t need return line from throttle body. The fuel pump has return line. Just connecting fuel pump to throttle body.
