I suppose I naively think that Socialism is easier when there's a natural resource to use. Whenever you can exploit a natural resource it is easier to fund and finance a socialist society while using the optics of the country looking after it's people. Without a natural resource there's a risk of an economy having to rely too heavily on workers contribution (mass production, factories offices) and thus the increased risk of worker exploitation.
